The Great Jerome Mathis Second Chance Experiment has lasted less than two months.
Today, the Redskins released Mathis, a receiver who was with the Houston Texans before legal and injury troubles derailed his career.
The signing of Mathis -- a return specialist -- never made sense considering the Redskins re-signed Rock Cartwright during free agency.
In Mathis' place, the Redskins signed defensive end J.T. Mapu.
Mapu (6-4, 290) played at Tennessee, posting 65 tackles. He tried out during the Redskins' mini-camp earlier this month.

Vinny, I couldn't understand why you sign Mathis in the first place. With Rocky and Randle El on the roster, I felt he was not a priority. However, after commenting on that, I do agree big time on signing a young defensive linemen. Now, thats a big need, and I hope he works out for the team. We also need healthy linebackers. I know there are some on the roster, but, I hope maybe, some of them will workout. "Go Skins"! John

After viewing the Redskins for the last ten years I doubt if this season will produce a winning team. New coach, new player do not make for TEAM PLAYERS!!! Each individual player on the Redskins only know Me, Myself & I!!!
It is the new brand of football and the coaches and owners put up with the players poor showing year after year.
I would not give any football player over 200K a season and would have contracts reviewed at the end of every season.

I don't fault them for signing Mathis. He didn't get a bonus and thus cost them essentially nothing. They got a rider on seeing if maybe he could flash the form that got him in the Pro Bowl. He didn't. End of story. Every team does a lot of this. Mathis was news only because he was a former Pro Bowl player.

Its amazing to me to see how many negative so called fans there is out there. Seems like they wait for any small bit of news to bash the team and most of which probably never even played more than Madden football in their lives!

AAA Your comments are on target. If he got back to his Pro Bowl form, then the comments would have been WOW, what a helluva move!
No cost, take a chance. It did not work. No harm to the Redskins. Feel sorry for Mathis.
Mayber some young players will learn that there are no guarantees in the NFL.

Mathis will catch on somewhere. The only thing that has held him back from being better on the field are injuries. The legal issues are nonsense. He'll get picked up by someone else. The league always needs good return men and he is just that. He should go to the Rams or Vikings and catch on.
