After signing former Hampton University receiver Jerome Mathis as their first free agent of the offseason on April 4, the Redskins will entertain Hampton native Jerod Mayo on a pre-draft visit tomorrow.
Mayo, a three-year starting linebacker at Tennessee, led the nation's eighth-ranked defense and the SEC with 140 tackles as a junior in 2007 while making the all-conference team. The Hampton native, who ran 40 yards in just 4.52 seconds at February's scouting combine, has already earned his degree in sports management and has been working out with former Pro Bowl linebacker Takeo Spikes to get ready for the April 26 NFL draft.
The Redskins, who could use some young linebackers to groom behind 30-something starters London Fletcher and Marcus Washington, are one of 11 teams that Mayo is visiting.

They better concentrate on using the highpicks to fill bigger needs; another pass-rushing defensive end, a big wide receiver or depth in the secondary & offensive line. Unless Rocky cannot make it back; they are not in that bad of shape @ linebacker. Lets hope they dont use the draft to stockpile players they dont need or wont make the team like they usually do.

They do need a linebacker Marcu Washington has been injured the last two years and Mcintosh is injury prone. London Fletcher is 32 so drafting a linebacker who can make an impact is just as good as getting a young defensive end.

With the 21st pick, all we can ask is that they get a guy who can be a starter for a number of years. I'd prefer he be a DE, corner or O lineman, but the key is getting someone who can play. Steve is right. We could get thin very quickly at LB, but they did draft a couple of guys there last year. Blades can play.
And what's this I read about them drafting yet another number 3 QB? Is that an annual ritual now? There are plenty of guys around who have actually demonstrated some ability to play in this league. Why waste a pick on a rook who will likely never see the field?

the 21st pick does not provide ample opportunity for the Redskins to pick an impact player who can start and fits a blaring need (DE, DT, WR). There is an outside possibility that Kenny Phillips might still be available at this position. If so, I think it would be a very decision to get him.
