Receiver D.J. Hackett, the only free agent the Redskins have brought in for a visit, has reportedly signed a two-year, $3,5 million contract with Carolina. The Redskins had only offered Hackett, who worked with coach Jim Zorn the past four years in Seattle, a minimum-salary deal. With Bryant Johnson having signed with San Francisco, the market in free agent receivers is pretty dry so the Redskins will likely use an early-round draft pick to add the big wideout Zorn wants.

Unbelievable that "The Danny" and his "Village Idiot", after spending money on lackluster performers, would allow themselves to be outbid for this guy. Sounds like they are beginning to take the "Misers of the Midway" approach to free agency and simply taking the bargain basement approach. This is a guy Zorn worked with for four years!!!! Maybe, just maybe, "The Danny" will cut ticket prices by one half in anticipation of another year of lacklust performances that are no doubt just around the corner.

They must not have wanted him too badly to only offer a minimum contract. I can't see them using a high draft pick on a wideout if they were only prepared to go minimum contract with Hackett. Would a rookie be more productive than Hackett, a proven pro well-schooled in Zorn's offense? I doubt it, so maybe they are just prepared to go with Mix and Caldwell.

I was luckwarm about Hackett. His stats were average, he has been hurt often, and his size and speed is good. If he blossums down in Carolina, then great for him and them. If not, then, ....
I think that the draft is so deep in potentially very good wide outs that that is the way to go.
That said, it makes me wonder if the Redskins still covet Chad Johnson.
$7 million in cap room, with more potentially that could be opened, makes me wonder what the front office is planning.

I just don't understand the free agency approach this year. There is a happy medium between over-spending and not spending at all. Last year we made the playoffs on pure emotion, everyone else in our division has gotten markedly better and we are holding "pat." It just doesn't make sense, If we are looking to completley build through the draft, we are in for a few very bad years!
