Updated: Redskins get three extra picks [David Elfin]

The NFL just released this year's compensatory draft picks and the Redskins, for a change, came up big. Washington was granted extra choices at the end of the third round (96th overall) and two after the seventh (244th and 249th). The third-rounder was compensation for losing guard Derrick Dockery to Buffalo. The seventh-rounders were for losing running back T.J. Duckett to Detroit and cornerback Kenny Wright to Cleveland.

The extra third-rounder gives the Redskins four picks in the first rounds for the first time since 2002. Washington had just nine such selections during the five drafts since.

UPDATE: In my haste to post the news about the Redskins being awarded three compensatory draft picks today, I neglected to mention that losing linebacker Warrick Holdman to Denver before last season was another factor in Washington receiving two seventh-rounders.

Let us hope that the team uses these picks wisely.

For God's sakes! Pick an Offensive or Defensive Lineman with these picks!!!

3 more picks thats good....actually thats great...but please by all means dont use the 1st pick on a WR......we need to use that on a DE or DT......the D-line is getting up in age so this should be a A-1 on the to do list. Also pick some offensive lineman as well.....The O-line the past few years have missed alot of games due to injuries....so its time to sure up that position as well....A CB,S,WR are the redskins other needs that should be addressed as well. I not crazy about the Zorn being the head coach, but as a long time redskins fan(1971-present)I'm willing to wait and see what happens with the guy it's only fair....but if he is not he will be the most blogged character in the metropolitan area....oh besides that dum-dum Bush guy.

I wonder if the tragic death of Sean Taylor, who was on a path to another Pro Bowl, was also a factor in the Redskins being awarded the highest of the compensatory selections, at NO. 96, overall...the pick could have come after another team's pick, after all... . I'd like to think that the NFL exerted some compassion in light of his death.

how many games have we won by more than 10 points don't count the last game because dallas didn't try. We need sparks on our offense not a conservetive offense like joe gibs. im happy for new head coach jim zorn and his west coast OFFENSE. now we need a #1 receiver for that offense which i see limas sweed adding a great deal at # 21.

1.Limas Sweed(specificly)
2.defensive end
3.Safety
3.O-line
5.linebacker
6.corner
7.trade up
7.trade up
7.trade up
we lost two wide redeivers tell me we won't draft a receiver in the firs round!

Tene first of all the Cowgirls did try to win the game but got beat, not only is playing the Redskins a rivalry game its an NFC East game and teams don' t just let other teams win regardless of the situation or their record.

My other point to you is concerning the teams draft needs and selecting a wide receiver at 21 is stupid because this receiver class is weak no receiver in the 2008 draft can touch last years best receiver coming out of college Calvin Johnson and he struggled big time.

The Skins need the best impact player that can contribute immediately like last years pick which was a great pick Laron Landry.

The greatest need in my opinion is a pass rushing defensive end that can get to the quarterback or make him rush his throws or a pass rushing linebacker...

the next needs are offensive lineman across the board , and a cornerback , and safety

Anthony Mix a wide receiver is already on the Skins he is 6 foot 5 and 230! Zorn will give him a shot ...Offensively we will attack it is a much different philosophy than Gibbs conservative offense.I would look for receivers in the 3rd round

Portis will flourish because this west coast offense will be similiar to what they ran in Denver when he set all those records.Gibbs never used or put Portis in the best position for him to excel.

As far who to pick, Zorn threw into the mix during his interview another CB. If the Redskins keep pick #21, I doubt that a "can't miss" DE will be available. The best two or three DE's will be gone by then. Probably, the top two to three college players at QB, DE, OT, WR, CB, RB, OG and DT positions will have been picked by the time the Redskins' turn comes. There is depth at several of these positions in this draft, but by this pick those on the board fitting a defined need will have some potential negatives, or concerns.

I am now of the belief that if the Redskins can trade the pick (up or down) to secure a "can't miss" or get a potential dominant player much more cheaply, than go for it. Otherwise, just take the best player on the board.

hey anonymaous, 1st, if you clinched your division and you have a bye that doesn't mean your not going to risk injurie right before the playoffs. They put their star wide receiver on the bench(T.O). 2nd, if one of our wide receivers get injured who do we have left huh. we lost 2 of our wide receivers to free agency. Our #1 wide receiver is our tight end. chris chooly he led the redskins in receptions and touchdowns. come on. Your right about the receiver class not being the best, but you forget limas sweed had injuries in lots of his years. Just like adrian peterson, remeber what he did. by pick #21 most of the best defensive ends will be off the board. Back to receivers in the draft. you said the receivers class isn't that good so are you saying we shouldn't draft in bad classes. so we shouldn't just draft in the 7th round were everyone isn't as good as calvin johnson or those other beast first rounders. The point is our defense was pretty good last year wich was 8th in the nfl. our offense was 15th in the nfl, im not saying drat all offensive palyers but thats our first priority. Laron landry was a sweet first round pick. a good future for him!

its true that joe gibbs is conservative but so are you guys. every year it's improve defense...defense ... well guess what the best defense is a good offense. go for wide receiver limas sweed very under estimated guy. every game he plays in he has a big effect. 4 out of the last five years we have drafted a devensive player i the first round. 5 out of the last five years we havent gotten to the superbowl.im a redskins fan 2 but its time for some change and jim zorn is going to be the one to bring some change!

I have said before it would be a big mistake to use the first rounder on a wideout. There absolutely will be quality wideouts cut during camp who can come in and contribute. We have plenty of more pressing needs, such as corner, safety, both lines and maybe LB. In order, I would look for a pass rusher, then a corner, then offensive line help. If the available talent is equal, go with the higher need. If not, go with the better player.

Good we got the xtra picks...now let's see how they use them...Dline & Oline A1 priority, then think about trading 2 comp picks for starting receiver.
