Demps should be first [David Elfin]

Safety Will Demps will likely be the first free agent to meet with the Redskins this year when he visits Redskin Park later this week.

Demps, 28, played his first four seasons with the Baltimore Ravens before moving to the New York Giants in 2006 and the Houston Texans last season when he was a Pro Bowl alternate.

Although he wasn't drafted, the 6-foot, 208-pound Demps started 10 games as a rookie for the Ravens. He has remained a regular since despite a torn ACL that ended his last year in Baltimore five games early and a dislocated elbow that prompted his release by the Giants last August.

In the wake of the shooting death of Pro Bowl starter Sean Taylor in November, the Redskins are looking for a safety to play next to LaRon Landry. Second-year man Reed Doughty was solid after Taylor was lost last season, but backups Pierson Prioleau and Omar Stoutmire could well depart as free agents. Fellow reserve Vernon Fox is more of an asset on special teams than on defense.

This could be a wise move; Carlos Rogers will be out for several games, at least. Smoot did a nice job towards the end of the season and Springs was excellent. Although we have three corners, having another - and a pro bowl alternate - would provide depth at a critical position. That said, however, the Redskins have several major needs, none of which are CB; rather, they are defensive line and offensive line and 1 tall, sure handed, wide out. Further, there are questions about McIntosh's physical situation. Finally, there is the salary cap and its limitations for the Redskins to sign additional people.

It is the coaches and the front office that is suppose to make the correct decisions based upon the information available. I hope they do.

I agree that S. Will Demps would be a nice addition, but, without giving the farm away. But,I do
have questions about our cornerbacks & linebackers. Both CBs Smoot, Springs & Rogers, between age and injuries as well as the possibility of losing a step. Also, the surgery that LB McIntosh & CB Rogers had could take a least 1 yr. to completely heal. Even LB Washington has seem to have slowed down.. There will be allot of choices to be made, I just hope that the right ones are made. The Skins have a tall receiver on their roster by the name of Mix, he is 6'5". He was signed to a 3 yr. contract. He may or may not be the answer, but, he deserves a chance. Offense & defense of lines also need some help. I hope that the Skins fine their need though the Draft. We need young people to groom. I agree with John that our situation with DBs and LBs is not all that reassuring. We will be ok at LB, with Blades available, maybe Godfrey and there are usually plenty of serviceable vets available. Corner could be another story. If Springs gets hurt again, we are very thin. Smoot is not really a number one corner and Rogers is barely an NFL quality corner, plus who knows when he is 100%. Everyone seems to think they need to sign a big wideout, but they do have Mix, he played with Campbell in college and he certainly looked good on special teams. They could do worse than take a look at Keyshawn Johnson. Cooley can be used more as a hybrid receiver/tight end, as he certainly is not an effective blocker from TE. Plenty of receivers will hit the wires during camp, no need to do anything crazy now. Use the draft to get some linemen.

Will Demps resigned with Houston yesterday for 2 years for around $4mil a year.
