« Zorn doesn't see Redskins signing any free agents [David Elfin] | Main | Frost re-signs [David Elfin] »

Caldwell, Macklin in St. Louis [David Elfin]

Receiver Reche Caldwell and corner David Macklin were the first Redskins free agents to visit another team today when both were entertained by the St. Louis Rams.

Caldwell would reunite in St. Louis with former Redskins associate head coach Al Saunders. Caldwell, who has also had feelers from Oakland, has received a minimum salary offer from Washington. The Redskins don't appear to be interested in retaining Macklin.

UPDATE (5:37 p.m.):

Macklin signed a 1-year deal with the Rams; we haven't yet learned terms on the deal. Caldwell, meanwhile, could sign as early Friday.

I really hope we resign Caldwell. I think he would be a very good 4th reciever. I think the Redskins think they can pull off a deal for Chad Johnson or they may draft a WR early in the draft. With Mix and Thrash already on board, there may not be enough room for Caldwell.

There is a lot of positive chatter on different blogs about Caldwell and hopefully resigning with the Redskins.

If he has that much potential, I think the Redksins would have signed him quickly. I did not see enough of him to form an opinion on him. The free agent market is not beating drums to get him, apparently. Mix may have potential; he certainly has the size. I am neutral on Chad Johnson, primarily due to his supposed "attitude issues" - real or imagined.

I have always liked James Thrash: solid, dependable, great hands, team first player. However, he is on probably on the bubble (unfortunately) due to his lack of speed.

I still think the Redskins will use the draft and get one or two receivers. I would prefer stocking up on linemen, however, since the draft is fairly deep this year in that area.

I think losing Caldwell would be a mistake. He is a proven NFL receiver. It's unlikely a rookie would be as good. He made his share of plays down the stretch last season. If I'm him and I have a choice of equal contracts, I'd take St. Louis, where they have a good QB and Al Saunders.

Caldwell is nice to have because of his size, and because he is a solid route runner - 4th receiver indeed. Mix will prove himself or he won't in camp with Zorn's offense. Man we need to stay away from Chad Johnson - too much baggage and fanfare in a league where first downs are already treated (celebration wise) like record breaking achievements. And, Thrash is a keeper because of his versatility. And Saratogan, Thrash's speed is excellent, always has been, don't think he's lost a step, he's just lacked the natural athleticsim to be a formidable receiving threat. His straightaway sprinter speed, and toughness makes him a HUGE contributor to special teams. We needed to go after Bryant Johnson in my opinion, as drafting a WR is a shaky proposition. You can look at league wide rundowns on the failures, and it's easy to see (over the last 7-10 seasons), but let's bring it closer to home with just a few names...Desmond Howard, Michael Westbrook, Albert Connell, Rod Gardner - it's getting painful right? The last guy that worked out at WR for our ole Skins was a young man out of James Madision in the early 80's by the name of Gary Clark...been a long time indeed. STAY AWAY FROM WR's in the draft - and if you absolutely have to put your head up your a^&, then go for Malcolm Kelly.

Good points Stoney. I cringe everytime someone mentions them taking a receiver in the draft. They should have resigned Caldwell, but even if they lose him, there will be quality guys available over the summer.
