« Collins back. Brunell out? [David Elfin] | Main | Walker won't change Skins' plans [David Elfin] »

Gotta get paid [Ryan O'Halloran)

The NFL cash registers have been open for exactly 14 hours, 31 minutes and even though the free agent class isn't that great and stalwarts like Asante Samuel (although he's reportedly on the verge of signing for $47.2 million over five years with Philadelphia), Alan Faneca, Randy Moss and Lance Briggs remain on the market, that hasn't stopped teams from acting like salary cap space was burning a hole in their collective pockets.

In no particular order, here are the contracts already signed.

*Kawika Mitchell, LB -- Giants to Buffalo (5 years, $17.5 million, $3.5 signing bonus). Mitchell had trouble finding a job at this point last year and settled for a one-year deal in New York. After a slow start, he was a key part of a Super Bowl-winning team.

*Jeff Faine, C -- New Orleans to Tampa Bay (6 years, $37.5 million, scheduled to make $20 million in first three years). The Bucs started the day $44 million under the cap and it appears they’re entertaining every free agent except Jon Gruden's brother, Jay, a former Arena League quarterback.

*Madieu Williams, S -- Cincinnati to Minnesota (6 years, $34 million, $13 million guaranteed). The Vikings pledged last week at the Combine to be active in free agency after they dropped the ball last March even though they had money. They overpaid for a player I wouldn't know if he walked past me. (editor's note: Ryan wasn't here when Madieu starred for the Terps, so go easy on him)

*Kris Jenkins, DT -- Carolina to Jets (5 years, $35 million, $20 million guaranteed). The Jets traded third- and fifth-round picks to the Panthers for Jenkins -- a move the Redskins used to perform often. Before the season, I wrote that Jenkins' value was akin to a use bag of footballs. A questionable move by New York.

*Cleo Lemon, QB -- Miami to Jacksonville (3 years, $8.1 million). Lemon was also pursued by the Vikings, where he would have had a better chance at playing. But he stays in Florida to back up David Garrard.

*Corey Williams, DT -- Green Bay to Cleveland (6 years, $38 million). The Packers got a second-round pick for their franchise player. I don’t remember Williams being called that much in the NFC title game loss to the Giants.

*Derek Anderson, QB -- stays in Cleveland (3 years, $24 million). Cooler heads prevailed with Cleveland and both sides came to an agreement. Grab some bench, Brady Quinn.

*Tommy Kelly, DL -- stays in Oakland (7 years, $50 million). Kelly played only seven games last year because of injury. This move continues to cement the Raiders as the NFL's laughingstock.

*Justin Smiley, OL -- San Francisco to Miami (5 years, $25 million, $9 million guaranteed). Bill Parcells' first big move is one to help solidify the offensive line.

*Flozell Adams, OT -- stays in Dallas (6 years, $42 million). This deal got done before last night's deadline.

*Chris Redman, QB -- stays in Atlanta (2 years, $5 million). It's good to be Chris, who was out of football until brought in by Bobby Petrino last year. The Falcons have to be thinking Matt Ryan with their first pick.

*Jerry Porter, WR -- Oakland to Jacksonville (6 years, $30 million, $10 million guaranteed). The Jaguars needed to upgrade their receiver position so they trade for Troy "Dropsies" Williamson and sign Porter, who might have a good year left.

*Thomas Tapeh, RB -- Philadelphia to Minnesota. No terms yet.

*Jonathan Vilma, LB -- traded from Jets to New Orleans.

*Jason Ferguson, DT -- traded from Dallas to Miami.

Speaking of free agents and Redskins' mistakes, I was looking over the free agents on ESPN and saw a familiar name, Chris Clemons. Apparently he didn't play at all in '06 but had 8 sacks for the Raiders last year. I could never understand why the Skins let him go. Everytime he got on the field , he got to the QB. Now they are still looking for a rush guy, and Clemons is set to cash in.
