Collins, Frerotte to switch sides? [David Elfin]

Old pal Gus Frerotte has said that St. Louis coach Scott Linehan told him that he's going to be cut. That leaves the door wide open for erstwhile Redskins quarterback Todd Collins to sign with the Rams as a backup to Marc Bulger and rejoin Al Saunders, his mentor the past seven years.

Collins signed with Washington in 2006, largely to follow Saunders from Kansas City. After not playing for almost a decade, the 36-year-old Collins was outstanding after replacing the injured Jason Campbell last December and leading the Redskins to victories in their final four games and a spot in the playoffs.

If Collins leaves as a free agent, the 36-year-old Frerotte could resurface with the Redskins, for whom he began his career from 1994-98. Frerotte played when No. 1 draft choice Heath Shuler was hurt in 1994 and 1995 before winning the job in 1996, a season he concluded in the Pro Bowl. Frerotte was benched in favor of Trent Green in 1998 before beginning a journeyman's odyssey that has taken him to Detroit, Denver, Cincinnati, Minnesota, Miami and St. Louis.

Wouldn't it make sense to bring in a veteran backup who has had a lot of experience with the west coast offense? I always liked Gus, but has he had that experience? This is the inevitable result of changing offensive philosophies every couple of seasons. The players you have don't fit the new system and you have to retool.

Actually, Gus has been a fairly widely travelled journeyman, and one of his stops was Denver, working the WCO under Shanahan.

I wonder if Jeff George is still interested in a comeback ... :-D

You kidding? He had an exhibition last week for a number of teams at the combine. Jeff George is always looking for a new job.

Get rid of the 2 QBs that got the Redskins to the Playoffs the last 2 out of 3 seasons (Collins, Brunell) and keep the QB that was leading the Skins to a sub .500 season with massive number of turnovers (Campbell). Are they that stupid? I guess everyone knows where they are headed this year...last place. LMAO!

Tim,

They invested a lot of draft picks in Campbell, so they feel that they have to justify that investment. I tend to agree with you. If he hadn't been injured, I doubt seriously they make the playoffs. I see the Skins window closing pretty rapidly here. Their offensive line is getting old, Portis has a lot of miles on him and they have lost basically all the young defensive starters they drafted, except for Landry. They can't screw around another couple of seasons hoping Campbell can play. Thye have to play the guy who gives them the better chance to win. Zorn could be a one year and out head coach if he wastes a lot of time on Campbell.
