« Cerrato gets promotion [Ryan O'Halloran] | Main | Cooley, Samuels to wear No. 21 »

The two-week mark [Ryan O'Halloran]

Day 15 of Covert Coaching Search 2008 has arrived and still no press conference, still no word on Al Saunders' future, still no explanation as to why Gregg Williams wasn't worthy of the promotion and still nothing from The Danny on why he mentions continuity and yet is closing in doing the opposite.

1. The people I contacted around the league were not astounded but still amused by Vinny Cerrato's promotion to basically Grand Poo-Bah status within the Redskins organization. Cerrato had been in the background the last four years because Joe Gibbs handled the roster with beaucoup input from Gregg Williams and the other assistants. Now it's Cerrato's turn (again) to shape the roster exactly how he and Dan Snyder like it. It's also a clear sign that The Danny is itching to re-enter the NFL fray after also playing a supporting role to Gibbs since 2004. As one reporter friend said last night, "If I'm a Redskins fan, I'm not sleeping well."

2. Because most of the coaching staff is under contract for 2008 -- including some hefty salaries ($2.4M for Williams, $2M for Saunders, at least $1M for Blache and Bugel) -- it will be interesting to see how much freedom Fassel gets in assembling his coaching staff if he gets the job. It would be a stunner if Williams/Saunders aren't paid to go away because, well, if you're Fassel, why would you want them around? The defensive coaches might quit in support of Williams and then scramble around for jobs in Baltimore and Atlanta and Dallas. The Cowboys have two openings on the defensive side.

3. Rex Ryan as the new defensive coordinator makes sense ... and it doesn't make sense. It makes sense in that, if Williams departs, his loyal players aren't going to be happy so it's imperative the new coordinator be somebody with a reputation that will make him gain instant credibility. Ryan has that kind of resume from his time with the Ravens. But it doesn't make sense in that Ryan was a 3-4 guy for most of his time with the Ravens. And the Redskins aren't close to having the kind of players needed to employ a 3-4. But I'm sure Ryan can adjust his scheme.

4. After defensive coordinator, Fassel's biggest hire will be quarterbacks coach. I'm assuming Fassel will call the plays for at least the 2008 season. His hiring would also guarantee Jason Campbell is the without-a-doubt starter since free agent Todd Collins has no reason to stick around if Saunders is a goner. If Bill Lazor isn't retained, Fassel has to find a position coach who can quickly connect with Campbell, whose development is paramount to the Redskins taking the next step.

5. In a non-search item, if anybody didn't see HBO's "Real Sports" last night, it's a must-see. The opening segment is about drinking at NFL stadiums and FedEx is prominently featured. It's pretty alarming how much hard liquor is consumed before the game even starts. It's amazing there aren't more gigantic crashes on the Beltway after a game.

Thanks for the link to my blog, Ryan.

I am a diehard redskins fan. The last two days I have been in shock. I cannot believe dan snyder would not promote greg williams. This team is so close. Now redskins have to wait 3 or 4 years again, they get close, and boom something else will happen and we will have to start all over again. I don't want to be selfish but Joe Gibbs owed it at least to his coaches and players to stick around one more year. Look at Tony Dungy and Mike Holmgren.

Dan,

You own the team and do what you think is best.

Good luck and keep winning !

if the skins hire fassel, we will have a losing record for sure. please wake up and go after somebody worth while, somebody that can bring something to the table for us. fassel is not the right guy. us skinn fans have waited a long time, hiring fassel will just make us look for another coach in a year or 2 he is worthless.

Dan Snyder continues to prove that he should stick to marketing and let football people make football decisions. What quality coach wants to come to an organization where your assistants are already chosen for you? Why wouldn't you maintain continuity if your team just won their final four games to make the playoffs? Why would you put a young QB who you traded up in the first round for in yet another offensive system when he is starting to grasp this one?

Snyder has yet to realize that you build a football franchise by drafting well and hiring quality talent evaluators. They have fewer home grown draft picks than any team in the NFL, have made horrible free agent acquisitions, and are in the worst salary cap shape of any team in the NFL.

Danny boy is setting this team up for another double digit loss season and I believe a regression into the worst team in the NFC East and in the bottom 3 or 4 in the league.
