McCardell on his way? [Ryan O'Halloran]

The local all-sports radio station is reporting that veteran receiver Keenan McCardell is close to joining the Redskins. I'm guessing that he'll be at Redskin Park on Monday for a quick workout and if the Redskins are serious, he'll be signed in time for that afternoon’s practice. The team remains off for another four days.

McCardell, 37, was with the Redskins way back in 1991 but did not appear in a game. He was with Houston in training camp this summer before being released. He has 861 career catches, including two 90-plus-catch seasons playing with Mark Brunell in Jacksonville.

If McCardell is signed, here are the ripple effects:

1. Brandon Lloyd falls further down the depth chart but don't expect him to be released. The salary cap penalty is too severe. If McCardell is in good physical shape right away and Reche Caldwell is up to speed with the system, expect Lloyd to be inactive.

2. The Redskins are definitely concerned about Santana Moss' groin injury. He might not be ready to play against Detroit in Week 5. Because of that, the team's interest in McCardell is necessary because they need another proven receiver to join Antwaan Randle El in the lineup.

3. My guess is the Redskins would cut a safety (they're carrying six) to make room for McCardell. On the chopping block are Omar Stoutmire and Vernon Fox.

4. The Redskins have zero confidence in Lloyd playing any kind of role. Period.

UPDATE (4:11 p.m.): A team source said today that McCardell has not signed -- contrary to a radio report -- but is scheduled to be at Redskin Park next week for a work out.

This loss to the giants really irritated my vada. Imagine the momentum going into the bye of 3-0 with two straight division victories and staying even with the dreaded 'boys! Particularly galling was not poking the ball in at the end to tie. Can you imagine where Riggo would have pushed thet group of g-men defensive pretenders? We MUST beat Detriot after the bye. I don't care how.

The loss to the giants was a big disappointment to me. They should have gone with a new version of a "heavy jumbo", the line, tightends, an extra guard and Sellers up the middle. They would've punched it in on that last drive!
What happened to the coaching staff??

Bad loss but we need to move on. Detoit likes to throw the ball. I wonder if a play-action to Cooley would have worked on fourth down. dunno.

redskins roll

Where is the speed that we supposedly have on offense. Moss can get behind defenders but can he explode past one after the catch......When is the last time you saw CP make someone miss and take it to the house for a long run, outside of the run he had last year or the year before against the Giants, you have to go back to Denver. When have you saw Moss or any receive catch a quick slant, split the safeties and take it to the house. Defensively, we have no one who plays with an attitude, defenses are supposed to be nasty. Fletcher came in and plays with emotion, but what about wanting to simply knock someones head off. The better defenses pay with emotion and attitude, who on the skins D, is a trash talker outside of Smoot and thats not saying a lot.
