No fooling us at Welcome Home lunch [David Elfin]

The Redskins made a curious choice of theme music for the video that opened their Welcome Home luncheon today. I love the Who, but did they not think that anyone would find "Won't Get Fooled Again" the right pick for a team that fooled everyone into thinking it was a playoff contender last season before collapsing to a 5-11 finish?

And while Pat Fischer was my favorite Redskin (just ahead of Billy Kilmer and Charley Taylor) when I was growing up in Washington in the 1970s, his rambling introduction of Rock Cartwright as the 2006 Special Teams Player of the Year was agonizing. Since Fischer never played special teams it was a curious choice, especially with Mark Moseley, the only NFL MVP special-teamer, sitting on Cartwright's other side. Maybe they just wanted someone who wouldn't tower over the diminutive Rock and at 5-foot-9, Fischer fit the bill.

As feisty as ever at 67, Fischer, who intercepted 56 passes during an amazing 18-year career, did get off one good line, saying the No. 1 rule he learned in the NFL was "don't touch the ball because it draws a nasty, dirty crowd."

And yes, Defensive Player of The Year Sean Taylor actually spoke in public. But like Cartwright, Offensive Player of The Year Chris Samuels and coach Joe Gibbs -- who still gets standing ovations from the faithful after two ugly years sandwiching the playoff season of 2005 -- Taylor said nothing.
