KIEV, UKRAINE — My story on President Bush's press conference with Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko is up on The Washington Times' Web site. In the story I mention a protest in the city's Independence Square, where thousands gathered in 2004 to protest elections that were found to be fraudulent, sparking the "Orange Revolution" that carried Mr. Yuschenko to power.
During their press conference, Mr. Bush and Mr. Yushchenko both mentioned Ukrainian communist protesters in Independence Square, who greeted Mr. Bush upon his arrival with red Soviet flags bearing the familiar gold hammer and sickle, as well as a prominently displayed sign with a four-letter expletive.
Mr. Yushchenko, still bearing signs of the attempted assassination by poisoning during the 2004 "Orange Revolution" election, tore into the protesters.
"These were the flags that caused totalitarianism … that caused deaths of millions of people," the Ukrainian president said.
I walked from the press hotel about 10 minutes to Independence Square, and took some pictures and video of the protest.

I found, when I got to the protest, a number of older Ukrainians arguing and debating about the flags and signs. I couldn't understand a word of what they were saying, but it reminded me a good bit of watching Americans argue about the Iraq war at protests.

I hope to post the video soon. It's loading right now. The fascinating thing is the music they were blasting and the age of the protesters. They were almost all older, but they were playing heavy metal or some kind of metal over loudspeakers.
