Bush to speak Thursday on troop levels

This was announced for the first time yesterday, but White House press secretary Dana Perino gave a little more detail just now on President Bush's plans for announcing future troop levels in Iraq.

He'll talk Thursday morning, but the White House is not going to ask the TV networks for airtime, she said.

"I'd call it a speech but I don't think it will be much longer than 15 to 20 minutes," Mrs. Perino said.

Mrs. Perino declined to preview any of the president's decisions and said he wants to let Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker testify on the Hill today and tomorrow, and then announce his decisions the day after.

Asked about Iran's announcement today that it'll expand its uranium enrichment process by building an additional 6,000 centrifuges (they already have 3,000), Mrs. Perino said the U.S. will continue to try working through the United Nations to stop Iran from building a nuclear bomb.

"We do know that it does have an impact when we speak with one voice," she said.

The plan going forward is to “keep tightening with those sanctions to tell the government that we have a huge problem with them not being transparent about what they want to do with this enrichment," Mrs. Perino said.
