The Washington Times is evaluating the items on our Comics page, and we'd like your input.
As it stands, we've got 17 comic strips running on our page. We want to know what you like, what you don't like and even what you feel we're missing.
Our collection ranges from a playful pair of fraternal twins and their grandmother in Grand Avenue to the saucy quips of Fred Basset and the motherly musings of Rose is Rose.
We've also got the indomitable Crankshaft, the geeky but genial Monty and the lovable pup Buckles.
And of course, we've got the daily high school dramas in the long-running Funky Winkerbean, The Buckets' family foibles and the good-natured ribbings of Herb & Jamaal .
The dashing Dick Tracy sniffs out criminals on our page, and the characters of Crock lampoon society and each other out in the desert while the cavemen of B.C. escape the jaws of dinosaurs.
Our Rubes strip is biting but side-splitting, and Bizarro is, well, bizarre.
Rounding out our team is the intrepid maid Hazel, the self-titled strip of Harry Bliss and feline frolicking in Cats With Hands.
We're asking our readers to e-mail us the names of their four favorite comic strips. We'd also like to know which ones don't tickle your funny bone and even the names of 'toons we aren't running but are worth a look.
Please send your comments to comics@washingtontimes.com. We look forward to hearing from you.
Update: Thanks to everyone who has responded so far. We're still accepting feedback until April 11 and would love to hear from you. Thus far, we're hearing not much love for Hazel or Rubes, and folks are interested in seeing us pick up maybe Dilbert or Snuffy Smith. Please keep your responses coming!
Update II:Our comics survey is now closed. Thank you to everyone who has participated.

I really hate that I have to read the Post to get Sherman's Lagoon. Most of the comics are boring at best. Zits would be nice, as well as Dilbert. Mary Worth is funny, too. Seriously, scrap them all and seek input from your readers for a new "17." HTH.
Posted by Sherman the Shark | March 12, 2008 9:38 AM
I wish Rex Morgan, which used to be in the Post could come back in the Times. Thanks.

YES! -- Please, please don't change Jumble, or the Crossword you are using. Or make either any smaller on the page. Also votes of support for Rose (is Rose, etc), B.C., The Buckets. Wouldn't be missed: Monty. Finally: has anyone there noticed the unremittingly partisan and liberal messages of Bizarro?

Would like to see you add Snuffy Smith comic strip which used to be in The Washington Post. Really enjoy The Buckets. Thank you!

Take a look at some of the oldies like The Phantom, Prince Valiant, Mandrake, the Magician or Dagwood. Mallard Fillmore is very funny and usually makes a political statement without being vicious. Besides, it must be good as it has been proscribed by our local Roanoke Pravda-Democrat "newspaper".

You should add:
Zits
Baby Blues
Blondie
Bizarro (on Sundays)
Beetle Bailey
Frazz
Brewster Rocket: Space Guy!
Get rid of:
Cats with Hands
Rose is Rose
B.C.
Rubes
Crock
Grand Avenue
Definitely keep:
Monty
Dick Tracy
Bizarro
Funky Winkerbean
Crankshaft
Hazel (I read this only because it is so bad)
The Buckets
Jumble

Far better, I think, to have fewer and better comics than a page of dull-as-dishwater sweet n' earnest strips that are just pointless. I'll be charitable and rate the following as C-minus: Grand Ave, Fred Basset, Rose is Rose, Buckles, Monty, Rubes, Cats with Hands and Hazel. Face it, none of these are ever FUNNY; they have no bite, and no particular point to make other than, "Look at THIS! Isn't it CUTE?!"... day after day.
If you ever start to regard your comics readership as thoughtful and intelligent, you should seriously consider a whole new level of humor and sophistication. I suggest, for starters, Doonesbury, and The Piranha Club. Two strips you are currently running reach this higher level: H. Bliss and Funky Winkerbean. Keep them. BC makes the cut, too.
Might I suggest you consider re-running old strips of the glorious "Calvin and Hobbes" by Bill Watterson. The series was closed out years ago, but to most readers it would be hilarious and refreshing. Ditto for the strips of the great Berkeley Breathed who drew "Bloom County" and "Outland". I understand Breathed is still drawing a weekly Sundays strip.
Keep a good crossword, and I see that a lot of otherwise intelligent people are becoming seriously addicted to those Japanese numbers puzzles. Yo-gi-go?...or something like that.
Lastly no self-respecting DC rag should hit our porch steps without cartoons of the three best political satirists in our fair republic: Pat Oliphant, Ben Sargent and Jeff Danziger.

I concur...the Post has dropped some good comics over the years. I wish the Times would bring back Rex Morgan or Mary Worth. Thanks.
Posted by Dave | March 29, 2008 12:14 PM
Pearls Before Swine! It's the best comic out there, not counting Calvin and Hobbes which is no longer in production anyways.

Crankshaft - for old folks
monty - pure humor
B.C. -Inteligent design
crock - everone's school memories
ABSOLUTE WORST

If there was a wish list here is some of the favorites...
Over the Hedge (liberal), Get Fuzzy, Garfield, Mother Goose and Grimm, Kit n' Carlyle, Mutts, Doug Eat Doug, Red & Rover, Pickles, B.C., Wizard of Id, State of the Union (conservative), Pearls Before Swine, Dennis the Menace, Family Circus, In the Bleachers, Prickly City...
A list that all may enjoy!

Great job! Thanks for the opportunity to comment. I suggested this a couple of months ago and its nice to be able to offer feedback.
Best: Dick Tracy, I feel compelled to keep up with it.
Worst, by far: Cats with Hands. It is just really dumb.
Mallard Fillmore is great, but in a different category, I suppose.
Your other strips are so-so, not very interesting, but occasionally funny..
I encourage you to explore and take a chance on some new emerging strips rather than jump to an old favorite.
thanks again

Comics need not be funny and many are not, however, they tell a story and as one who enjoys reading, I enjoy most comics. I do not care for those like Doonsberry or Ben Sargent they are more negative then posative and do not belong in the comics section.
I grew up with Dick Tracy, Red Rider, Green Latern, Family Circus etc and the best by far for art is Prince Valiant and I still can hardly wait to read that one and see the great art work.
I learned to draw those comics then taught myself to do other works of art because of them.
I enjoy Rose and Garfield and wish that what passes for a newspaper in my neck of the woods would return some of the good comics they removed several years ago like Dick Tracy, Mary Worth, etc. They gave us trash instead, Over the Hedge, Pearls before swine, Candorville, F-minus, Get Fuzzy,Prickly City, Dilbert, CathyPooch Cafe, Edge City, Mother Goose & Grimm and DOONESBURY which should be buried 1,000 feet deep.

It's obvious that tastes in comics are wide and varied. The best way to satisfy this is to have as many as you can. Try 50 strips if there's room.
Posted by Dave Warnick | March 30, 2008 7:41 PM
ADD DILBERT!
KEEP BUCKLES, Bizarro, & Sudoku
You may also want to consider adding Kakuro puzzles something unique like funny quotes from the late night talk shows to add some laughs to the comics page.

We are a young family and enjoy reading the following strips:
Rose is Rose
Grand Avenue
Crankshaft
Funky Winkerbean
Rubes
Bizarro
The Buckets
Buckles
Monty
BC
Other comics which would be enjoyable:
Foxtrot (used to be in the Times)
Get Fuzzy
Zits
Thanks for printing comics which the whole family can enjoy.

Comics the way they should be:
Andy Capp, BC, Pogo, Kudzu, The Lockhorns, Beetle Bailey, Family Circus, Nancy, Peanuts, The Far Side, The Phantom, Prince Valiant, Blondie, Shoe, The Wizard of Id, Snuffy Smith, Lil Abner, Dennis the Menace, Grin and Bear it, Opus, and Herman .
I believe the Classics are the best by far. Unless a comic strip is destined to become a classic, why even have it on the page. I recommend you run the best of the best and leave the "also rans" and comics targeted to specific demographics to others. The classics appeal to everyone which is why they remain popular timelessly. In addition, most newspapers are read by baby-boomers who love these strips and the younger generation could use the education.
W-Times, a classic and quality rag, should only present the best classic and quality comic strips. Of course, the crossword and word jumble are also a must.

Fav four are Rose is Rose,Buckets, Funky Winkerbean, Crankshaft. I don't enjoy Dick Tracy or Monty. Rose is Rose exudes love and lightness which is good for a change. Funky Winkerbean certainly is a soap opera which did develop its characters well. However, since it has jumped 10 years into the future, I admit I have been confused and I think have lost track of some developments. I would appreciate it if the creator would somehow clarify some of the story line; such as the brave soldier who was sent back to Iraq and the wife was home caring for the baby that eventually was born.

Some of these comments go off the deep end. The Times has already a great selection of comics and while all comics are not funny every day, and while there are some I am not interested in, I can see the audience that would be interested in that comic. What a great job of picking your comics.
Having said all that, who would not want to see Dilbert in the Times. However, because that choice is so obvious I suspect there are other issues preventing it from happening.
I did see one of the local papers in Fredrick Md. that also had a great selection of comics. Since I am not from there I can't remember the name.

Your comics page is plagued by cynical, offensive, and/or boring comic strips. By far and away your best are "Herb & Jamaal" and "The Buckets", as they show a keen understanding of family dynamics and are nearly always able to exploit them for jokes. I for one would welcome the removal of the unimaginative and vulgar "Monty", the irremediably dull "Funky Winkerbean", and the plagiaristic "Bizarro", "Rubes", and "Bliss", whose authors appear to keep Gary Larson anthologies close to hand at their desks.
I would welcome the reintroduction of "Fox Trot", and would also be pleased by the addition of "Pickles".
Posted by Matt | April 3, 2008 3:10 PM
I enjoy reading: Grand Avenue, Fred Basset, Rose is a Rose,Crankshaft,Buckles, Funky Winkerbean, Herb & Jamaal,&B.C. Dick Tracy is all right. But the rest I can do without. You might want to consider adding For Better or For Worse, and "The Lockhorns on a daily basis"
Also, while I'm at it, we get the Sunday funnies and magazine with your Saturday paper. I suggest you package that with your Sunday paper. If it were a true Sunday paper, maybe I wouldn't have such a hard time finding a copy in our area on Sundays.

please add Day By Day. a conservative strip on the lines of Doonesbury only it's funny.
Posted by Scott D | April 4, 2008 3:59 PM
I like Fred Basset, Dick Tracy, and B.C. I like Mallard Fillmore. Can you get Dilbert? I like that one too.
Posted by Bob | April 4, 2008 9:21 PM
My favorites in the Times now: Funky Winkerbean, Crankshaft, Herb & Jamaal, BC. Plus Mallard Fillmore on page 2 and the Lockhorns in the Saturday color comics. Day by Day would be excellent! So would Dilbert.
Posted by Roland Hirsch | April 5, 2008 7:39 PM
Milton, you're not the only one who has noticed the changes in Bizarro. That one runs hot and cold.
My favorites:
Grand Ave
The Buckets
Monty
Cats With Hands
Herb & Jammal
Lola (would love to see this during the week in addition to SUndays)
Rubes

ROSE IS ROSE is a favorite - always funny and especially like the ones with the kitty, Peekaboo.Crankshaft is next, then Buckets (I see kids I know in this one) B.C., Crock. I love MALLARD FILLMORE - brilliant and on-target every time. Wish it would appear on Saturday as well - really miss it on Saturday. Would like to see FOR BETTER OR WORSE, Family Circus, other family oriented comics. Cannot STAND the way-too-Liberal BIZARRO, and it isn't funny, just left-wing political propaganda written by a very mean-spirited and jaded man. There is quite enough sarcasm and hostility in this city and we don't need it in the comics.
Posted by Meredith Gray | April 6, 2008 11:32 PM
Dilbert would be great (I'm an electrical engineer), but if you could get Prince Valiant, I'd have no reason to buy the Sunday Washington Post.
Pluggers is great, and doesn't fit the Post, so maybe if we started a letter writing campaign to them about how wonderful it is to have a strip with real American values, they would drop it like a hot potatoe.
Posted by David R. DeSpain, P.E. | April 7, 2008 1:11 PM
Sorry, your comics are just plain horrible (other than Mallard Fillmore, which is only mediocre.) I get my comics online, so I don't have to buy a left wing paper: Day by Day (Chris Muir, although this is internet only as far as I know), Dilbert, Pearls before Swine, Get Fuzzy, Prickly City, For Better or For Worse and Opus. I used to read Liberty Meadows and Dr. Fun, but alas they are no more.
Think outside the box: what about a talent competition, find new comic artists and new strips? I have heard it is very hard to get original comics published, I'll bet there are loads of talented people out there who would be thrilled for the exposure of being in a paper.
Posted by Maureen | April 7, 2008 6:10 PM
The best: "Funky" and "Crankshaft". Also good: "Dick Tracy" (although not a good as it was years ago), "Bliss" and (sometimes) "BC".
The worst: "Buckles" (same old jokes); "Cats With Hands" (don't get the jokes -- and I like cats); and "Hazel" (was it ever funny?) "Tiger" doesn't work anymore, either.
"Rose Is Rose"? That woman needs therapy. She scares me!
I know it's a cost thing, but I'd love to see the Sunday comics expanded to six or eight pages. First, make "Funky" and "Crankshaft" full sized. There are a couple of adventure strips that are better than "Dick Tracy": "Annie" and "The Phantom". A full-sized "Annie" paired with maybe "BC" would make a great looking front page.
"Between Friends", "Pajama Diaries" or "Retail" may do well. (I dare you to run "9 Chickweek Lane!")
Yes, adding pages cost more. Would it help to offset it by reserving some of the space for advertisments?

Yes, the classics are the best.

I look forward everyday to finish reading the paper with the comics. I particularly enjoy Crankshaft and Funky Winkerbean. One of the few things I enjoy more about the Washington Post, is the larger comics section. If I were to ask for anything more of the Times it would be to increase the comics section.
Yes I'm one of those baby boomers that enjoy the classics, but Dick Tracey is so slow moving I could do without it.
Posted by Alan H | April 11, 2008 9:57 AM
On Sundays, the best is The Lockhorns, followed by Mallard Fillmore.
