Wizards not pursuing Hughes

A league source with knowledge of the situation said the Wizards are not among the potential suitors for former Wizards guard Larry Hughes.

According to a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer on Dec. 24th, the Cavs have contacted "several teams" - one of them the Wizards - about trading for the 6-5 Hughes, who in 2005 signed a deal worth between $65-$70 million.

According to multiple sources, Hughes has never been happy in Cleveland. However, Hughes has three years and more than $39 million remaining on his contract, a number the Wizards - already flirting with the projected luxury tax trigger ($67.865 million).

Any trade for Hughes would probably have to involve team captain Antawn Jamison, who will earn more than $16 million this season. However, Jamison is in the last year of his contract and having a very productive season with averages of 21.7 points and 10.7 rebounds. As of Christmas morning, Hughes had appeared in 14 games, was averaging 9.8 points and shooting just 32.7 % from the floor.

No one is going to pursue Larry Hughes while he keeps getting hurt, isn't shooting well, and has that giant contract

Only trade that makes sense is trading our bad contracts in Deshawn and Etan for Larry. It works under the trading rules. Even so, he is injury-prone and in a funk. The bet would be that Larry stays healthy and can regain the form he had here playing in the back court with Arenas. Makes Ernie look brilliant for passing on Larry and trading Kwame for Caron. Now only if he had passed on signing Etan and Deshawn!

No. tThe Hughes era in DC has passed. I have relatives in Cleveland and they are not as thrilled with having him now as they were when he was first acquired.

Hey Bob, why is the deshawn contract bad? Last I checked he was one of the biggest contributers to the wiz's much improved D. I think he's very important to the team.

Deshawn is a "bargain" for what they paid. There's some nights (like tonight) where he flirts with scoring 20 a game, and next to Caron probably plays the best defense of any of the starting five.

Right now, I would trade him for Larry, straight-up. He's healthier, better on D, and a heck of a lot cheaper.

Etan was definitely overpaid, but perhaps he can still contribute. If he can give us anywhere near what Brendan is giving, he'll still be a bargain for a big man. (Anyone notice how "Pech" is coming off the bench before Andre now that he's back?)
