Soaring food and fuel prices have left the United Nation's most reliable humanitarian food program about $500 million short, and an urgent international appeal is being issued to raise the extra funds, Ambassador Josette Sheeran said Feb. 29, 2008, at an editorial board meeting at The Washington Times.

When asked what she would like to see the United States do to help, both as a government and as ordinary Americans, Amb. Sheeran said that the World Food Programme needs help meeting its core budget as well as additional funds. The organization is appealing specifically for help with its school feeding program.

Two years after President Bush ordered a sweeping technological overhaul of the early alert system for natural disasters and terrorist attacks, the unified system has not been implemented.
