One to go

The Caps just finished up their final morning skate of the regular season; whether or not it is the final one of the season will be determined in about eight hours. A win gives the Caps their fourth division title in franchise history, the No. 3 seed in the Eastern Conference and two games at Verizon Center next week to start the postseason.

Thanks to some help, the Caps control their own destiny, although Florida's Nathan Horton sees it a different way.

"We control everything now," Horton told the Panthers' beat writers after the game last night.

The lineup will be the same for the Caps tonight. Goalie Cristobal Huet will go for his ninth straight win and the Caps will try to win for the 15th time in 19 games. Here is some of what Bruce Boudreau had to say this morning:

"At least we know what we have to do. It is in our hands, or at least we have some control over it."

"Nothing's really changed from yesterday. We have to win. If none of this that happened [last night] had happened, we'd still have to win because Pittsburgh plays tomorrow against Philly and Boston plays tonight."

"The message is we just have to win. Or lose in overtime, but we don't even want to address the 'L' word. We just have to keep it going. That's all I was thinking last night is I don't want to make a hullabaloo about anything except we have to win.

For those who want to peek ahead, here is how things map out for the No. 6 seed. First, here are the tiebreaker scenarios if any of these teams finished tied:

  • Boston over New York
  • Boston over Philly if it is 94
  • Philly over Boston if it is 95
  • Ottawa over Boston
  • Ottawa over Philly

    New York finishes sixth with:

  • A Boston win tonight and a regulation loss to New Jersey tomorrow

    Boston finishes sixth with:

  • A win tonight and a New York win/OT loss tomorrow

  • An OT loss tonight and a Philly non-win tomorrow

    Philly finishes sixth with:

  • A win tomorrow and a Boston non-win tonight

    Ottawa finishes sixth with:

  • A regulation loss by Boston tonight and a Philly non-win tomorrow
