Washington Times political reporter Stephen Dinan reports today that GOP front runner Mike Huckabee has staked out at least one aggressive position aimed at curbing illegal immigration:
Mike Huckabee wants to amend the Constitution to prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizens, according to his top immigration surrogate -- a radical step no other major presidential candidate has embraced.
Mr. Huckabee, who won last week's Republican Iowa caucuses, promised Minuteman Project founder James Gilchrist that he would force a test case to the Supreme Court to challenge birthright citizenship, and would push Congress to pass a 28th Amendment to the Constitution to remove any doubt.

"No other major presidential candidate has embraced"
Excuse me but Ron Paul has been saying this all along. Convenient now that he has Iowa behind him and Ron Paul is rising in the polls that Huckabee now has the courage to come out and say this - or is he just saying it because Ron Paul is making so much headway with his solid committment to doing something serious and profound about the immigration problem?
Next you'll be hearing the candidates support gold.

Great. Someone else is asking to do the same thing that Ron Paul and my Congressman Tom Tancredo had also discussed. It's about time that we have a President who will work to stop the immigration madness that has gone on for the past 30 years. Businesses can hire Americans to do their work rather then illegally seek to exploit lower-skilled illegal aliens and then pass the buck on their healthcare and other unpaid expenses to the American taxpayer - billions in-terms of net loss. I have nothing against immigrants/aliens. In-fact, I have worked with and have developed an immense respect for many highly-skilled immigrants/aliens and know of several others who have came to this country, followed the rules, couldn't work (Student visa) and then had to go home frustrated that they couldn't become an American citizen. They chose to follow the laws and didn't want to "cut in line" and they were hired by employers who chose to follow the rules too and they sadly left when they had to go. It truly was a pleasure to see people who came to this country not just to work, but to be an American and to know much more about our country than most American citizens. People who would go to a soccer match and wave the American Flag and not boo during the playing of the National Anthem. People who would not line the streets waving flags of their country in protest of ours....So what part of "illegal" don't the other weak-minded politicians understand in "Illegal Aliens?" Guess it depends which businesses and special interests are paying for their re-election. Kudos to Huckabee and, like the Fair Tax proposal he also touts, I sincerely do hope that he follows through on this promise.

I can't believe anybody is voting for McCain. He is an American traitor.

"a radical step no other major presidential candidate has embraced"? This is irresponsible journalism. Ron Paul has been touting that since the beginning of his campaign, and probably before Huckabee was in politics. Giving you the benefit of the doubt that you were unaware, an immediate correction and admission of ignorance to your readers is the responsible thing to do. Otherwise, you should be ashamed for being part of the media machine that chooses candidates for the viewers/readers instead of merely reporting facts.

Shame on you for not doing your homework! Ron Paul has been proposing this idea for a long, long time now.
http://ronpaullibrary.org/topic.php?id=5
Huckabee, on the other hand, has a record of giving away our tax dollars to illegal immigrants - particularly with education programs.
This is nothing more than desperate politicians pandering to what their campaign advisers tell them people WANT to hear.
How about we elect a politician who stands for something and has a track record to prove it? Ron Paul has been pushing the same ideas in Congress for over 30 years!!!
Ron Paul 2008!

I want a retraction for the false statements printed in this article. The United States of America is to have free elections and misquotes like this can sway it. In fact Ron Paul has legislation on the house floor every year to end birthright citizenship.
1st Session
H. J. RES. 46
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to deny United States citizenship to individuals born in the United States to parents who are neither United States citizens nor persons who owe permanent allegiance to the United States.
IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
June 13, 2007
Mr. PAUL (for himself, Mr. GOODE, Mr. DEAL of Georgia, and Mr. AKIN) introduced the following joint resolution; which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JOINT RESOLUTION
Proposing an amendment to the Constitution of the United States to deny United States citizenship to individuals born in the United States to parents who are neither United States citizens nor persons who owe permanent allegiance to the United States.
Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the following article is proposed as an amendment to the Constitution of the United States, which shall be valid to all intents and purposes as part of the Constitution when ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years after the date of its submission for ratification:
`Article --
`Section 1. Any person born after the date of the ratification of this article to a mother and father, neither of whom is a citizen of the United States nor a person who owes permanent allegiance to the United States, shall not be a citizen of the United States or of any State solely by reason of birth in the United States.
`Section 2. The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation.'.
Mike Huckabee has done nothing but support illegal immigrants even gives them preferential treatment over ACTUAL AMERICAN CITIZENS

David S. beat me to the punch. Ron Paul has been against birthright citizenship from the beginning.
Mr. Huckabee's rhetoric does not match his past actions which either means 1. he's changed his mind (and if so, then it needs to be answered as to why he has changed his mind), or 2. he is being dishonest, and is changing for political and not idealogical reasons.

This article is lying, he has made his statement and it is that he is NOT in favor of amending the 14th amendment. This must be some sort of MITT PHONEY or the REPUBLICAN ESTABLISHMENT TRICK... but it will not work, I will never vote for a flip flopping flake over huckabee. To me MITT is a POLITICAL CHRIS ANGEL. this article is not reporting the whole truth. I will never look at this site again.... but if it was true it would be a good idea and he would definiately have my vote...

Criminals did NOT build America; Citizens and LEGAL immigrants built it. Illegal Aliens and Immigration is NOT the same thing. 80% of the American people want an end to anarchy! This is NOT a Democrat, Republican, Independent issue. It's an American Issue.
Illegal aliens are criminals, those who hire them are criminals and those who aid-and-abet them are criminals.
Illegal aliens in America have NO rights. We are required by law to arrest and prosecute, deport them. (Title 8 U.S. Code) To report illegal aliens call the DHS National Hotline 1 866 DHS 2ICE. (1-866-347-2523)
No, matter your political party affiliation, and setting aside your thoughts on issues. We all need to remember what it is to be an American Citizen. We need to make sure our elected representatives obey their Oath of Office and keep their Oath of Allegiance. See http://tinyurl.com/2znnvl Know whom you are voting for.

Huckabee's record shows what he believes. He's now saying what you want to hear. He's a globalist. Just look at his voting record. Ron Paul is the only one who's voting records show that he hasn't changed his stance on the anchor babies nor any other of the issues.

No, no, and no. More political diatribe. It does not require a constitutional amendment; it requires a different interpretation of the language of the Constitution.
I agree that Children born to illegal immigrants are not citizens because those children are born in this country. Yes I know liberals have decided that is the case but it depends on how you interpreet the Constitutional verbiage.
The constitution says children born to parents who are in this country "UNDER THE CONTROL OF THE US GOVERNMENT".
Therein lies the rub. Are those illegals reallyu under the control of our government, a government that has no idea who they are or where they are or what they are doing here?
Only if you stretch the definition of "under control" into next week.
The truth is it's more fuzzy political correctness and gutlessness by People who are who not willing to stand up for what's right. Maybe because they can't see it even when its right under their noses.
This is not about children. I love children. But this is about our laws and the fundamental twisting of those laws for some political gain.
IF the Supreme Court interprets these words ("under the authority and control") as meaning anywhere hiding from authorities within the boudaries of this country, then the kids are U.S. Citizens. Fine.
But if the court were to decide illegals are NOT under the authority and control of U.S. Authorities who don't even know where they are, then they are not citizens. And it does not require a constitutional admentment at all. That's plain political hogwash. It's all in the interpretation. Now someone let us know when those words were intepreted as currently applied. (If ever.) I bet long before there was this huge problem of 15-16 million illegals hiding out in this country.
As for me, I say they cannot be citizens when they are illegally here. End of story.

According to the Huckabee campaign press release today, this is not his position. I am glad, I think we are better than this. This would not stop the flow of illegal immigration from Mexico and would hurt children who have done no wrong. It would also hurt many Chinese families who have come to America legally or illegaly that have a 2nd child here and who are now unable to return home due to persecution there. By allowing their children to be prospective American children it protects the persecuted and innocent.

Whom ever was first to say it, great, now let's see if they really can do anything about it. Maybe they can reverse anti life also. Oh yea, how about give out troops the right of combat and I bet they might win all our wars and not take 10 yrs to do because of politics, media, and passive aggression.

Great move by Mike Huckabee, a great American! To all you Ron Paul supporters: the article said the frst MAJOR presidential candidate. Ron Paul is not, he is way down in the second tier and I suspect that is as a result of his desire to legalize drugs.
Posted by Dean | January 8, 2008 7:33 PM
I do prefer the Supreme Court weigh in on this one.
I am opposed the existance of any amendment beyond the 10th on general principle. The framers got it right. We can not improve it, but we can foul it up.

In 2004 the Blogishpere gave the Democrats Dr. Dean. Now it's trying to give us Ron Paul.
Posted by jakester26 | January 8, 2008 9:01 PM
I could not agree more with Dr. Coles post. However, we have heard all this before and when they get in office, they simply seem to forget the "campaign" words that got them there. I want to make sure I cast my vote and watch closely because I intend as I have in the past to compare "campaign promises" to "oath of office" and see the change and the watering down by congress and forcing good believable men to change. But who really runs this coountry, congress, the President or lobbyist. So far I have no seen the lobbyist backing Mr. Hucabee as other candidate. I am a simple person and believe if we take away the so-called "lobbyist" funded electoral college, we may see a president who holds to his promise to the people and not to the lobbyist.

John McCain wears a SCARLET LETTER - "A" for AMNESTY that is permanently tattooed on his forehead. He will never live it down! He is a Ted Kennedy phony republican. There is no way conservatives will support him beyond Hew Hampshire. Go Romney!!!!!!!

Ron Paul is LIBERAL on Social Issues like legalizing Drugs.. Who Wants Your Surgeon High on Pot while he operates on you? Just because an action may be legal doesn't make it RIGHT!

Did you know that Ron Paul's company published newsletters for YEARS, under his name, espousing racism and conspiracy theories?
Posted by Lynn | January 8, 2008 11:51 PM
Mr. Dinan,
I just finished reading your online article.
You state:
"Mike Huckabee wants to amend the Constitution to prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizens, according to his top immigration surrogate a radical step no other major presidential candidate has embraced."
"a radical step no other major presidential candidate has embraced"
That is a FALSE statement.
Dr. Ron Paul has stated MANY times over during his debates and on his website, and for years the following:
"End birthright citizenship. As long as illegal immigrants know their children born here will be citizens, the incentive to enter the U.S. illegally will remain strong. "
I've been watching closely the Republican debates. And I am APPALLED by the treatment that Dr. Paul is receiving from the MEDIA or lack thereof.
The other candidates first scoff at Dr. Paul for his stance on the issues and NOW they want to SOUND like him.
I insist that you give the VOTING AMERICAN PUBLIC the ACCURATE and TRUTHFUL information and retract what you wrote about Mr. Huckabee (FLIP FLOPPER) being the Republican candidate making "radical" move. The only thing "radical" about him is the SPEED in which he changes his positions on issues.

Looks as if McCain won this round in NH, but there are 47 more states that will be having a say in coming weeks and months. As for the immigration issues, we can't count on politicians doing what they say. We had border fence passed into law, but with some recent amendments it is now up to the discretion of the DHLS to decide whether or not to build it. So far Hutchinson, and Cornyn from Texas are two of the people who put a halt to getting the fence stopped.I think we need to raise a stink in Washington again to force them to do what WE THE People told them we wanted.

JUST ANOTHER SMOOTH TALKER?
HUCKABEE FLIPS ON IMMIGRATION
If immigration is important to you as it is to me, listen to what Mike Huckabee said before it became a hot button issue. I don't mind him changing his position (well kinda - shows a lack of integrity), but it's pretending that he never took that position which disappoints.
Posted by bgbest | January 9, 2008 12:30 AM
What I hope Huckabee comes out with next is a proposal to deport all illegal immigrants within two years after his election. Round them up, break down doors if necessary, break up families if need be, but arrest them, hold them (men, women and children) in detention centers and football stadiums, put them on trains and buses under armed guard, and transport them back to Mexico. This is the ardent nativist desire about which pundits such as Victor Davis Hanson want Republicans to keep silent for fear of a voter backlash.
