Two new immigrants a minute

Immigration added a new person to the U.S. every 30 seconds in 2007, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, which has announced new projected population stats.

That's a net increase, which means it accounts for those coming in and those leaving. With a net increase of more than 1 million, it's probably safe to say the U.S. is still the most welcoming country in the world.

The country will work hard at energy efficiency and alternative energy sources, only to discover in twenty years that the improvements have been offset by immigration-fueled population increase. After all, we "have" to replace those boomers who are retiring, and we "have" to keep the economy growing to pay the debts and entitlements.

The candidates (for president) are not discussing how immigration fits into our national objectives. If they were responsible, they would announce that minimizing the numbers would be superimposed on all immigration policies. Keep it to essential immigration only. Within that context, chain migration, parental immigration, and birthright citizenship all need to go the way of the Edsel Ford.
