WASHINGTON — Paying for gasoline easily tops the list of economic woes facing families in the United States, according to a survey on how changes in the economy have affected people's lives.

About 44 percent of survey participants said paying for gasoline was a "serious problem" for them. Across all income levels, the cost of gas was the most frequently cited economic concern. The price of gas nationally averaged $3.60 a gallon on Monday, according to the Energy Department.

More than a quarter of households earning more than $75,000 a year described paying for gasoline as a serious problem. For those with incomes of less than $30,000, about 63 percent felt that way.

In a distant second and third place among participants' economic concerns were: getting a good-paying job or raise, 29 percent; and paying for health care and health insurance, 28 percent.

Following in fourth place was difficulty paying rent or mortgage, 19 percent.
Many participants in the survey, nearly three in 10, said they put off or postponed getting health care they needed in the past year. Nearly a quarter of participants skipped a recommended test or treatment. Nearly the same number didn't fill a prescription.

The survey of 2,003 adults was conducted April 3-13 on behalf of the Kaiser Family Foundation, which conducts health research. The survey's margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.

Who controls the greenpies banning worlds biggest oil reserves drilling[=USA] ?

Who controls the media balloon on this and Gore styrofoam polarbear extinction?

Soros. KGB stooge. MoveOn media

Cant you hear the laughter in new Moscow skyscrapers city awa$h in oilmoney?

I guess the thing I just don't understand is how the oil companies can get away with making these HUGE profits off of average Americans backs. Every quarter they report the largest profit margins every recorded, but no one is doing anything about it. It's gouging at it's worst and we are hostages to whatever they want to charge. If the cost per barrel is so high, then how come they are making these huge profits. It should be costing them more too and their profits shouldn't be so extravagant. I just want to wring their necks!

We are a spoiled country and culture. I grew up during WW11 and still recall a motto from that time in my life. "IS THIS TRIP NECESSARY?" was a form of self imposed gas rationing even while gas was rationed by the government. We jump in the car go to the local store several times a week instead of once a week. The driving public control the gas prices. Prices will drop 10% or more when we exercise restrain and use less gas. The CEO of EXXON said on TV recently, " You want lower prices, use less gas."

Lots of blame to go around. Can't drill ANWAR, can't drill offshore. Environmental standards on gas requiring area-specific formulations. Can't build new Nuclear power plants to generate electricity, can't build new refineries.Speculation on Oil Commodities market drives up prices. Record profits from Oil companies in the past four years. Bonehead government diverts Agri-business from food production to net-loss Ethanol production from corn while at same time imposing huge tarrifs on ethanol from Brazil where it actually is cost-effective to make ethanol from sugarcane. Arabs laughing all the way to the bank while they keep oil supplies down. American's driving big vehicles like there is no tomorrow. Politicians jetting around country in corporate jets telling us we are screwing up planet and have to pay carbon offsets. Bush not making Iraq cover some of our costs in return for no-cost oil from their country....

Boo Hoo! "I just had to drive a big car/SUV that gets lousy mileage and buy a big house that is 40 miles from work because I couldn't stand the thought of living in a smaller home, close to work!" Anyone who thought cheap oil (and the real estate bubble) would last forever deserves what they get. Global warming is BS, but we still have a finite supply of oil, and making it last as long as possible is a good idea. I love my 10-minute commute, in a car that gets around 30 mpg, on nice days, I ride a motorcyle and get even better mileage. I have a few hours a week more free time than the suckers who have to keep up with the Joneses, buy gas once every 3 weeks, and I'm on schedule to retire at 55. I hope gas hits $4.00/gal, schadenfreude is my favorite emotion!

Congress is to blame. The House & The Senate.

Drill in the Anwar. Drill in these new found deposits of Oil In Montana & Wyoming. Drill in the Magnificient find in North & South Dakota.

Get rid of Senators who listen to the EPA & These Environmentalist Tryrants and their lobbyests who are paying huge sums to the Representatives & Senators.

Throw the Bums out who won't vote to put in Refineries & Drill.

The Congress...the Liberals in both parties, should be thrown out. They have made us dependent on the terrorist oil. I am enraged against this Democrats control...they hate America.

Give us Nuclear Power.

Our oil price will come down...the Arabs are blackmailing us thru the EPA AND THE ENVIRONMENTALIST WACKOS.
I imagine the Arabs are making huge contributions to them.

Make Iraq pay us in Oil. They owe us Billions for their freedom.

I

We lead, the world follows. Asia starts mega use of oil, whose next? Either we lead by pioneering new energy sources for transportation or end up fighting the rest of the developing world for a finite amount of fossil fuel. In the meantime, make more micro cars and tax H2s out of existence.

Imperial Mandates from Congress to raise mileage standards are ridiculous. What they call an "Energy Bill" does NOTHING to increase available energy. Outlawing incandescent bulbs in favor of mercury laden Chinese-made compact fluorescent lights is the height of idiocy. Remember government mandated MTBE? Cellulosic ethanol, made from wood chips, is THE ANSWER. With 10% of the pine forests west of the Mississippi dead from Pine Bark beetles, we can reduce fire hazard and harvest an energy source. Oil futures are NOT controlled by Big Oil, speculators are directly responsible for the rise in oil prices.(Big Oil does benefit from the rise in oil futures) There are NO RECORD PROFITS in terms of PERCENTAGE!!! 85% of ExxonMobil's profit came from OUTSIDE THE USA!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!

Congress and the White share the blame with all the rest of us who keep voting for Democrats or Republicans. By and large though the bulk of the blame lies with Congress. Here in New Jersey we have a Senator running for re-election (who at 84 pretty much keeps the Dems from saying McCain is to old). In one of his TV ads he takes credit for making sure the oil reserves off the New Jersey coast were not tapped and thus saved our beaches. (The implication being that oil companise spill oil on purpose and can't be trusted.) While I am very fond of the Jersey shore and its beaches, we have to drive to get there. This goes with another liberal governor spending 4.5 billion to build a nuclear power plant in an adjacent state and then spending 500 million to fill it with cement.

Someone needs to start thinking about what processes make things work, as opposed to where campaign contributions and the deferred bribes that "speakers fees" seemed to have turned into, come from.

Bush blame a democratic congress for a problem that is at least 30 years old. That's "rich".
Why doesn't he just issue a signing statement ... he ignores congress on every other issue, including the 110th which was majority GOP.
Don't "flatter me" with your inanity.

raising of oil prices is just part of bush and cheneys 8 year plan of stealing iraq oil and raising oil prices to finish off the middle class started by a senile ronald reagan...

At the present time I have curtailed my driving by at least 50%, I never drive the speed limit and I try to conserve as much as possible. Today I will drive to Georgetown, TX for a church function, but will also pick up my cleaning, go to the library, and buy gas. The car I purchased five years ago has five forward speeds and I watch the rpm's carefully.

Tired of high gas prices? Well dig this. The USA has MORE unpumped oil than all of OPEC. OH? And you thought it was the Arabs raking us over the coals.

The FACTS of the matter are;

1. We have at least 500 years of proven coal reserves. Coal gasification (ie: turning coal into gasoline) is profitable when Oil is at $30 per barrel. The Nazi's did it when we were bombing them back into the stone age and we can too.

2. Put this term in your vocabulary. 'Oil Shale'. The DOE estimates that we have over 1 Trillion barrels of oil sitting in the ground along the Rocky Mountains, in oil shale. Extracting this resource is also profitable at $30 a barrel.

Everybody wants cheaper gas prices, OOP's, everybody except the Sierra Club and the Oil Company's that is.

What this country needs is a President with a set of balls! That will smack the Sierra Club in the head and make them understand that a bunch of fuzzy bears in Alaska, that we only see on the National Geographic Channel are secondary to our oil needs. In other words, start drilling in Alaska, off the coast of Florida and elsewhere.

We need a President that has the gonads to tell Big Oil to get used to a price of $30 for a barrel of oil. (Which it cost about 3 years ago).

We need to start building graphite ball nuclear reactors. You know, the kind that can NEVER melt down.

This country needs an Energy Marshall Plan and a President like Eisenhower, Kennedy or Regan to make it happen. We will never be truly free or independent until we are energy independent!

I suggest that you start calling, writing and Emailing your reps in DC, non stop, until they put this topic at the front of their agenda! If you don't? Don't complain about gas prices.

The answer is an energy source that has the same potential energy and utility as a tank of gas and costs less to produce which can also be recycled. The climate is too complex to be controlled, however the local environment will need to be controlled for human survival. Like the smog in L.A. either you control it our life cycle is shortened. This only leaves one alternative, electric for high density area's. The technology within these areas exists now. Eventually, the technology will improve to the point of connectivity to suburban areas and then rural. The amount of oil we currently have will drive the transition period. At some point the cost of producing the new energy source will be less than the rising price of oil. Only at that inflection point will the new energy source achieve exponential usage growth toward saturation. Schumpters "swarming of innovation" theory applies.

What's lacking from the debate on energy prices?

Logical thinking.

The solutions to the high energy prices are relatively simple. The problem is that the solutions have to be discussed, debated, special interests considered, egos schmoozed, get everyones $.02 worth of empty blather, subsidize some farmers and oh my gosh, think about the Caribou and Polar Bear! You cant get a solution to a problem like this through a committee. As the old saying goes, "What do you call a horse built by a committee? A Camel."

Here is the solution in a nutshell.

1) Mandate an immediate expansion of refinery capacity.

2) Mandate a Federal Standard for Gasoline formulation for all 50 states and all municipalities. Special blends just add cost for little or NO benefit even to polar bears.

3) Drill in Anwar right dab in the middle of the Caribou because they don't care and there are millions of the stupid beasts. Drill off the FL and CA coasts and off of any other coast where we may have oil and/or gas deposits, using good environmental practices of course while being sure to stay at least 40 miles out so the surfers and retirement communities can't see them.

4) Forget about ethanol, that is not a solution it is a farm subsidy that is too expensive, inefficient, more polluting and competes with food demand.

5) Use clean coal technology, mandate construction of new nuclear energy plants and hydro-power plants where possible like maybe the Mississippi river for one and the ocean on both coasts.

6) Return 100 million acres of the land back to the public domain that Bill Clinton declared as a national monument to block energy exploration and then explore it.

7) Stop whining about "Global Warming" there is nothing you can do about it and even it you did stop it, how what is the plan on maintaining a constant temperature? Would you even admit it it if we did stop it? What are the plans if the "Stop Global Warming Plans" starts Global Cooling? Just start generating more carbon if it gets too cool, I suppose. Shut-up. We'll all be extinct in 2 million years and replaced by another species that likes warm weather and doesn't complain about it.

8) Utilize hot springs for geo-thermal plants and that includes building a plant in YELLOWSTONE PARK. Grow some trees around it and you will never know its there and the elk, deer, antelope etc. won't care either.

9) Mandate all new roofing on all industrial plants and facilities be WHITE in color south of the Mason Dixon Line and in the southwestern states to reduce energy demands, especially during peak hours which usually occurs during daylight when white roofs reflect the most heat.

10) Discover a way to turn Kudzu in gasoline. Nothing eats the stuff and it grows a foot a day with no fertilizer and you can't kill it even with a ten year drought.

Your energy problem has been solved. You are welcome America! Vote me for President!

If Americans would stop listening to the anti-energy zealots and liberal politicians, we would have much more domestic fossil fuel and nuclear plants to power our homes and vehicles. If you want to know why energy is so expensive now, take a long look in the mirror. Unless Americans start choosing political leaders that will pursue a measured course toward energy independence that includes vigorous promotion of all viable, economic energy sources (e.g., more domestic oil production, nuclear power plant construction, and clean coal technologies), we might as well get used to the increased pain of paying more for energy. We live in a democratic society. We can choose to reject politicians who refuse to pursue sane energy policies. We haven't done that, so we are now paying for the poor choices that our politicians have made. America has more indigenous resources than any other country on the planet. We don't need to depend on other countries to provide for our energy needs. We just need the political will to exploit the resources that we have using reasonable environmental and economic models and goals. No new technology is needed to do this. So, when will Americans wake up and start using their power at the voting booth to make a better future for our children and grandchildren? When will Americans realize that abundant energy that is owned and controlled by Americans is the path to economic independence, freedom, and prosperity? Blaming American businesses (e.g., the oil companies) is crazy. THEY...ARE...US! They pay our salaries and provide investment opportunities that keep our retirement/savings funds and the American economy moving in an positive direction. They provide the capital that builds new businesses and better paying jobs for Americans. When they are not hugely profitable, Americans in all walks of life suffer the consequences. So, look in the mirror today and decide what kind of country that you want 10 or 20 years from now. If you choose to expand government control and punish profitable American businesses, we will deserve a failed economy similar to what happened in the Soviet Union at the end of the Cold War. We will have no one to blame but ourselves!

I have to agree with Al Gore and the Democrats on the Hill. High gas prices are necessary to combat Global Warming. Because of high gas prices, SUV and pickup truck sales are way down. That's fantastic news. The polar bear will survive. Thank god!

The news gets better and better. Car pooling is way up (happy days are here again), public transportation use has sky rocketed, compact vehicle sales are off to the races, and the drive for green energy (can't get more green than ethanol) has never been stronger.

Poll after poll indicates remarkable happiness among the American public with the current state of the economy. We owe all this happiness to Al Gore and his liberal friends. The price we pay to go green is simply wonderful.

Three cheers for Al and all the Liberals in academia. Keep up the good work.

PS....

Let us pray that the price of oil never falls again. The worlds poor cannot afford such a tragic outcome.

It is erroneous to claim that the high price of oil is cause by free market factors. the price of oil is high because the price is controlled by a cartel.
It is true that the petroleum is purchased bat auction in a free market, but the supply is strictly regulated. When the Arabs want oil to go up in price, they simply slow the taps, causing relative shortages in the market. When they want the price to fall, they open the spigots.
The oil sheiks know when to buy and to sell oil futures.
The Opec bigwigs and their friends and lackeys throughout the world are getting rich on the oil inflation... and the USA dollar had dropped drastically because of inflation caused by the rapid rise in energy costs.
The Arabs are using their money to buy up cheaper American assets, and to corrupt our political system, and to control the world with their vast wealth. Saudi Arabia is the biggest supporter of terrorism throughout the world, and has been so for over 50 years.
Both the Clinton and the Bush family are heavikyinvolved in making money from Arab oil sheiks. It has been reported that Jimmy Carter has accepted huge amounts of Arab money as our "Ex President for Sale".
Many ex State Department cadre have rich jobs from Arab Oil Sheikhs...legal post retirement payment for services rendered while in office.
We need a President who will break the back of the oil cartel, and force a free market to control prices.

A. Cut the ethanol program immediately.
B. Expore & find Alaskan oil reserves and start
pumping.
C. Build three (3) new state of the art re-
fineries.
D. Higgins is right. Open up that low sulpher
coal in Utah that Fienstein (sp) and other
idiots mada a national reserve for Willie
Jeff to sign. Did you know that we now
import it from Indonisia and Clinton's good
buddies the Riadys get a rake off?
E. There are billions of miles worth of
methane gas in every mud bottomed lake and
swamp. Find a way to extract it.
