Hoffa on Obama: 'He's like a Tiger Woods'

Union leader Jimmy Hoffa compared Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama to mixed-race golf prodigy Tiger Woods.

Woods, the son of a black American father and a Thai mother, became wildly popular after winning the Masters Tournament at age 21 and later went on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" to discuss the blurring of racial lines in America.

"He's like a Tiger Woods," Hoffa said of Obama during a stop on his travels through Pennsylvania on the candidate's behalf. "He's just a great person that's really excited a lot of people."

During a conference call with reporters today, Hoffa, president of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, praised Obama's record on labor and lambasted rival Sen. Hillary Clinton for refusing to completely sever ties with former chief strategist Mark Penn. Penn resigned on Sunday amid furor over news that he had met with representatives of the Colombian government to lobby on its behalf for a free trade agreement that Clinton and Obama both oppose.

"You can't have a guy on your payroll that's working for a foreign nation and that's basically lobbying for Colombia," Hoffa said. "It really hurts her credibility."

tiger doesnt like to speak out on politics so the comparison here is obvious in that tiger has been able to transcend race by gaining the admiration of fans of all races, obama has done that as well and they also share a mixed background which forces us to see them for more than their color but also their unique experiences. Obama has spoke on race and very eloquently at that, and somehow he is still able to maintain good standing amongst his diverse supporters, in a way I wish obama was another color with the same thoughts, at least there would be less attempts to make him seem disengenuous and more focus on his unifying beliefs

Obama is as similar to Tiger Woods as Rev. Wright is similar to Oprah.

Oprah is about compassion and love.
Wright preaches hate and anti-white, anti-American rhetoric.

In addition, Obama is not a uniter like Tiger.
He's a divider like his pastor. He's about less democracy - no votes in MI and FL. He's the most liberal senator in the Senate, having never reached across the aisle to get anything accomplished during his 2 years there.

Both Tiger and Barack have a tremendous work ethic. While both are very talented and intelligent, each has focused on his goals and put worth the amount of work necessary to achieve these goals. Talent alone cannot achieve much. As Tiger works on on his strokes, Barack writes his own speeches They are very organized, unbelievably so.

And the finishing touch: Tiger Woods father said he was proudest of all that Tiger was a good person. And Barck's family is proudest of all that Barack is a good and caring person. Everyone who knew Ann Dunham, Barak's mother, says that Barck's kindness and caring side is just like his mother.

Great article thanks to Hoffa. It crystalizes a geniune expression of the goodness in individuals we are learning to admire more and more for the qualities of sincere graciousness, geniune kindness - a strength not a weakness, presence of mind, higher shared thoughts and so very much more that we want our children to see as examples of the way to be instead of the alternative. Thank you Mr. Hoffa because it is realizing our brotherhood and sisterhood is the very dynamic that will join us in a family-type harmony this nation is so very hungry and our spirit bellies will be full of it:>) Thank you Tiger Woods and Thank you Sen. Obama. Who would have thought. . .

good for Hoffa!

It's a fairly proper analogy but a far cry from a concrete analysis. Obama is authenic and natural in his stance about caring for the American people. To Obama, unlike Woods, this is not a competitive sport. All teams win with Obama...Obama has much to lose. One team wins with Woods(himself). However, the analogy does have some credence. Yet, the point he must have meant to make is in the end if Obama became President and do a great job; all negative preceptions would turn into the same outcome as Tiger Woods. In this respect I would have to agree with Hoffa.

Good analogy. Obama is about as qualified to run America and the free world as is Tiger Woods. But Tiger's at least won some golf tournaments. Obama's resume is pitifully thin. He's spent the last 20-30 years cavorting with radical leftists and anti-Semites. He has compiled the most radical-liberal voting record of any Senator. He refuses to call the Iranian Revoluntionary Guard a terrorist organization despite its long history of exporting violence. He would pay back union boss Hoffa with the Orwellianly misnamed "Employee Free Choice Act" that would ban secret ballot elections in the workplace. The list of his faults is long and growing. Come to think of it, Tiger Woods would be a better president.

Rev. Wright does not preach hate. I'm sick of all the ignorant white people who get afraid whenever a black man speaks the truth about racism. The US is still a very racist place and Rev. Wright had the courage to speak his truth. I listened to the sermons and didn't hear him once say he hated white people. I don't care what people around Obama say I care what comes out of Obama's mouth and he can't control the thoughts of everyone around him. People who think Obama's responsible for the thoughts of other adults are just plain STUPID. It seems that Obama has the intelligent vote and they won't let what someone else has said discourage their beliefs in him. Obama will be the nominee and President so deal with it!

Al Gore is now running, this will certainly mix things up a bit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

> Wright preaches hate and anti-white, anti-American rhetoric.

No he doesn't. If you saw more than just those YouTube clips, you'd know that. Now, he's quite wrong about some of the conspiracies he aired, but he has a point that nobody tried hard enough to stop AIDS back when it was called GRID (the "gay disease"). Imagine if we had found a way to wipe it out back then.

Anyhow, his church helps all people, including whites like me. That's the only reason Obama got involved with them to begin with: because they were both doing community service together.

But I don't expect you to know that.

Ummm, Jimmy Hoffa has been dead for years - are we channeling his thoughts through Miss Cleo?

That is a perfect comparison!
They both are from mixed races, both work hard, both are careful in demeanor and the American people have already accepted Tiger into their lives and I think that it a good role model for Obama to look to. Let's see if he can win like Tiger though!

Right on Hoffa!

You guys do realize that this is a joke. Hoffa disappeared in 1975, so how exactly is anyone getting quotes from him?

Someone's been smokin if they think white folks are goin to vote for Hussein!

They found Jimmy Hoffa's body? And he's alive?!?!!?!!!Crazy!!!

Yes, Barack and Tiger are similar. They have both been compared to Jesus- Wood's father said he would be Bigger than Jesus, while Rev. Wright said Barack is being persecuted as was Jesus. I disagree with Hoffa that they transcend race because they both ignore discussing it. Barack's speech did not clarify anything about race relations in the US. He relied on the same tired paradigm of black vs white and he has no clue how to reach out to Asians and Latinos. They certainly don't transcend gender as his early denigrating comments toward Hillary showed. And Tiger..well he will be participating in a Golf competition that excludes females altogether. If he cared he would boycott and force a change.

I believe Jimmy Hoffa has been missing quite some time now. Maybe you meant James Hoffa?

Maybe it's a bad time to tell Peter (above post) a few facts:

1) Obama led the Harvard Law review and taught constitutional law before going into politics . . . he understands American Democracy more than any candidate in the field.

2) Oprah attended Rev Wright's church in Chicago as well as Obama. That said, both Oprah and Obama have denounced Rev Wright's poorly expressed frustration and inexusable remarks that were originally collected by FOX News and broadcast in 30 sec soundbites for the past 3 weeks. The things Rev Wright said on those VERY brief occasions were absolutely wrong, but if you look into Rev Wrights other sermons (there are more than 20 years worth of them) you'll find thousands more remarks on humility, compassion, grace, mercy, and mostly love.

It's sad to see people attack the Honorable Senator Obama for words that he, himself, never spoke. What's even more sad are the people who somehow believe that Obama will start to triple-tax Whites while handing our reparation checks to Blacks once he steps into the White House. That's just plain ridiculous.

I'm a 62 year old white woman from eastern NY , and I believe Obama is very much like Tiger woods You see a goodness that shows through when he speaks.
I can imagine a change in Washington , A change where lying and cheating , womanizing , and war are not the statas quo in the White house. Can you imagine our image in the world where our leader can calm , not only the country , but the world leaders
Can any one man do so much - No but if the image can start a dialog , and with the faith of a mustard seed , who knows what can hapen
May God bless this very special man

Great article! Both Tiger Woods and Barack Obama transcended, and overcome the artificial barriers society has put before them without complaints or protest. They both realized that the color of their skin does not determine who they are, and face life as American citizens who are proud of everything that has been given to them by God, and have attempted to make the most of what they got. Tiger as a golf prodigy never addressed the color, issue because as an athlete he does not need our vote in order to earn acceptance. Obama tried to do the same until our race centered society forced him to address it. The Clintons decided sometime after South Carolina that they needed to tell us that Obama was black. His candidacy was a fairy tale, and that we needed to get "real". He had to pass the test by publicly reject and denounce other black man like minister Louis Farrakhan, his former pastor or any black person who ever said anything that could be considered "unpatriotic". No other candidate had to prove him/her to be American enough. Without any complaint he spoke and told us that he is American and proud to be so. The greatest thing that we have experienced in this primary election, is the fact that there are more rational Americans who are willing to look at a person based on the content of his/her character than the rest of us, and in that sense we can say that Dr. King's dream is starting to become a reality. We can also thank the education system, since every poll show that Mr. Obama's acceptance is higher among the educated both black and white. Something that is readily apparent when one considers that the older a person is the more likely he/she is to vote for Hillary, while the younger generation adores him. Indeed, it is a great day in America.

Hoffa needs to talk to his candidate about his lobbyists...all three have them.

I have a great regard for Tiger Woods. Tiger is not running for the presidency of the united states. The president should be a leader and should lead by setting a good example. Sitting in a church for 20 years listening for even one moment to hate filled sermons goes to the good judgement issue. Senator Obama never seperated himself from those sermons! When politically correct, he retired the pastor. That's a serious issue with many americans. Christians are having a very difficult time with his presence in that church listening to hatred.

cbl wrote: "Christians are having a very difficult time with his presence in that church listening to hatred." I don't know what kind of "Christians" you're talking about. Jesus Christ said "I know my sheep, and my sheep know me" John 10:14 Please note that he never said that his sheep know each other. Maybe you mean the so-called Christian fundamentalists haters who call themselves christians... Jesus had plenty to say about them too.
