Liberal activists skeptical of Clinton's Iraq plan

Activists today at the Take Back America conference, a three-day gathering of prominent liberals, were skeptical of Hillary Clinton's position on the Iraq war, which she detailed today in an address at the George Washington University.

During her address, Clinton said she would begin withdrawing troops from the region within 60 days of assuming office at a rate of two brigades per month.

"For us it's never enough," said Madea Benjamin, a leader of the anti-war group CODEPINK. "I would never trust her because she voted for the war. I'll never forgive her for that. She used George Bush's lies to justify the invasion."

Benjamin said the timeline Clinton proposed would be much slower than she'd like to see.

"It could be done in six months," said Benjamin, who said she prefers Barack Obama because he "doesn't have that baggage" of voting for the war.

Brett Kimberlin, director of Velvet Revolution, a coalition of some 120 liberal grassroots activists, echoed Benjamin.

"I don't believe anything she says," Kimberlin said. "She'll say anything to get the vote ... But it doesn't matter what she says, she's history. She's not going to get the nomination."

Angelo Feste, a campaign worker for congressional candidate Shirley Golub, said Clinton is a "flip-flopper" and a "Republicrat."

"I was here two years ago at Take Back America and her message was basically, 'Stay the course,'" Feste said. "I'm skeptical. I want to believe, but I believe she's desparate and would say anything at this point."

Political reporters may get a better sense of where movement liberals are on the question of Obama vs. Clinton on Wednesday, when the results of a straw poll are presented. It will be interesting to see how Clinton is now faring with her party's base, considering she was booed at last year's Take Back America conference.
