If we build no more coal fired plants, this will occur at the sametime we build no more nuclear power plants because they too are dangerous.
If we try to generate more electricity with windmills and solar power we will not catch up to demand for electricity. That means more and more people will not be able to afford electricity for their homes.
It will be this same group of people who now find it almost impossible to pay for fuel oil to heat their homes.
Summation: No politician who wants to continue his or her political career will vote to prohibit building new coal fired power plants.

Here's Google, supplying information on demand to millions of people every day. Google accepts your queries and provides the results it feels adequately answer your queries. Would a politically active Google provide ALL the results, or would they perhaps withhold the results they don't want you to see? Their search algorithms are secret. Their page ranking algorithms are super-secret.

Does anyone think it possible that a politically active Google might, just might, start ranking the web sites of "climate change deniers" lower than those of say, Greenpeace and their ilk?

When you search on George W Bush, for example, do you get more UNfriendly-to-Bush web sites than you do friendly-to-Bush sites?

I suspect Google is already filtering their search results AND page ranks to bolster the popularity of Liberal-leaning web sites.

Don't believe me? Search on Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson, or any well-known Conervative. Count the numbers of "hate" sites vs the number of positive sites.

In the 1970s, the concern was overpopulation. I live in California, and the predictions were that the California coastline was going to become one continuous city from Los Angeles to San Francisco. This never happened. In fact, if you ever fly from SF to LA, you will have a difficult time finding any houses along the route, once you leave the SF Bay Area, until you get all the way to Los Angeles.

Then, in the 1980s, the concern was Global Cooling. Amazing how quickly that went away.

Then in the 1990s, up until throught 2006, the concern was Global Warming (the ice caps shrinking, etc.).

Now, since hundreds of scientists, and climatologists have refuted the global "warming" scare. And, with recent statistics showing that the earth's temperature has actually come down in the last few years.

The eco-freaks have once again changed their tune. Now, the scare is "climate change" (since they can no longer claim Global Warming. These folks need to get a job, and have a life. They want to keep protesting (like the days of the 60s). They need to smoke some of their substances, and chill out a bit.

I think we should use this event to demand that the SEC investigate the legality and validity of the entire carbon trading schemes that Bro. AlGore and company are really promoting!

Jeez, and I use Google for my blog. Ugh. It should be illegal for Google to use their bandwidth to flood the switchboards or email of anybody, government or not. They should remember they are a tool, not some electronic monster trying to run your life. I had to sit through a stupid "Green" promo at the Chinese theatre in Hollywood along with my previews and advertising, and now this. This is getting out of hand. I used to like the color green.

I don't know what all you people are talking about. When I woke up this morning the temperature was 45 degrees. Now at 5PM the temperature is 72 degrees. If that isn't PROOF of global warming, I don't know what is!!!!

On the current curve, global demand for oil will continue to increase indefinitely while the supply is limited. If you Google "top ten warmest years" you will get back 10-12 pages witharticles stating that several years from 1998 - 2006 were in the top ten. There is not a single mention of the data being revised to show no warming since 1998. If anyone uses Google to serach this, they will come back as Global Warming believers. Do you think there is a computer out there pinging those web sites to keep the revised data off the first ten pages???

The problem with coal is also sulfur emissions, not just CO2. Sulfur DOES cause MEASURABLE damage to the atmosphere.

Nuclear in its modern state is very safe, and uses a very different process as plants in operation today in the US. New ones use pelletized fuel, not fuel rods. Pelletized fuel cannot melt down as with fuel rods.

The US is currently building a nuke plant to power its new base in the Mid-East.

Hydrogen fuel cell energy has capabilities much greater than what is commercially available today. All of the good patents are owned by DARPA. We escaped oil dependency a long time ago, just that "we" doesn't include "you".

Hey 'cath', can you specify a single 'global warming' catastrophe that has occurred since the time Al Gore started spewing these lies over 15 years ago? The rate of sea level hasn't changed much since it started rising over 10,000 years ago. Overall polar bear populations are increasing. Global warming on average causes more rain not less because warm air can hold more water vapor. CO2 is what plants live on; their ancient genetics are accustomed to having MUCH more CO2 hundreds of millions of years ago - like 5 to 10 times more. It was also MUCH warmer back then too - as much as 10 degrees warmer during the Carboniferous period for example when earth was a PARADISE of plant growth, (where'd you think all that coal came from?). More plants and faster plant growth are GOOD things are they not? Either debate the scientific points being posted or go away; this is NOT a political debate and liking or disliking our president has nothing to do with scientific reality.

Eco-friendly measure can be on many level. Recycling, energy conservation, energy plans, cleaner coal plants etc.. I don't argue much of the global warming data is in debate but this isn't just about global warming, mass transit is about energy use, recycling is about saving finite resources. So why all the reaction about Gore or Global warming and further to draw attention to environmental issues is good in itself. Personally I'd still like to catch edible fish and would hope my children can too. Logically recycling is good an economic and finite resources standpoint. This is silly that anything environmental is tied to global warming debate... Environment is important period.

Al insists that temperature follows C02, the ice core samples show the exact opposite - you know just one of those "Inconvenient Truths" :-) I'm also waiting for answer of why his personal carbon footprint is the size of a town and growing every year while he hands out pamphlets stating people should live in straw houses, use compost toilets, not use electric hair or clothes dryers, and ride bicycles to work - I'm not holding my breath :-)

Oddly enough, cath, et al, I agree that we should be more conservative in our use of fossil fuels, for reasons that have nothing to do with the current climate claptrap.
It's the Gore-ites who have tried to make global warming a matter of faith and morals, and to demonize those who are skeptical of their poorly grounded theory.
As an aside, global warming was detected on Mars a few years ago, as evidenced by melting of the Martian ice caps. Are the little green men to blame for stepping on their planet with too large a carbon footprint?

Earth Day is a perfect date for Google to do something meaningful for the earth's environment:

SHUT DOWN ALL GOOGLE SERVERS AND COMPUTERS until the the earth capitulates and reduces its temperature to whatever temperature Google wishes it to be.

I opt for the average mean temperature of the Little Ice Age.
