Andre Carson, who was elected Saturday to replace his grandmother, former Rep. Julia Carson, Indiana Democrat, will be sworn in this afternoon on the House floor.
Mrs. Carson, who was serving her sixth term as a representative for Indiana's 7th Congressional district, died of lung cancer in December. Mr. Carson defeated his Republican opponent, state Rep. Jon Elrod, 54 percent to 43 percent in a special election.
Mr. Carson, 33, is a native of Indianapolis and had served on the Indianapolis/Marion County City-County Council. A convert to Islam, Mr. Carson is the second Muslim elected to Congress.
Mr. Carson aims to seek a full term in his district's primary election in May and the general election in November.
