Mrs. Carson, who was serving her sixth term as a representative for Indiana's 7th Congressional district, died of lung cancer in December. Mr. Carson defeated his Republican opponent, state Rep. Jon Elrod, 54 percent to 43 percent in a special election.

Mr. Carson, 33, is a native of Indianapolis and had served on the Indianapolis/Marion County City-County Council. A convert to Islam, Mr. Carson is the second Muslim elected to Congress.

Mr. Carson aims to seek a full term in his district's primary election in May and the general election in November.
