Pro-Clinton Magic Johnson: Who you calling 'rookie'?

In a radio ad for Hillary Clinton, Magic Johnson is implying that Barack Obama is untested, lacking the requisite experience for the presidency. The campaign hopes the fright message — Don't roll the dice on a rookie! — from the beloved Lakers legend will stop the hemorrhaging of Clinton's support among blacks in South Carolina.

But if there is one figure in American sports who should NOT be making the argument that you can't rely on a rookie, it is Magic Johnson.

Anyone out there remember Magic's own rookie season (1979-80) in the NBA?

I do.

After being selected as an All-Star game starter, he went on to lead the Lakers to the NBA finals against Dr. J's Phildadelphia 76ers. With a 3-2 lead in the series, the Lakers' great center Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was sidelined with a sprained ankle.

Lakers coach Paul Westhead boldly decided to start Magic, a 6-9 point guard, at center for game 6. In that game — in Philly — the rookie scored 42 points, snagged 15 rebounds, dished out 7 assists and topped it all off with 3 steals.

The Lakers won the game (123-107) and the NBA championship. The rookie was named the NBA Fnals MVP. His game 6 tour de force is widely acclaimed as among the greatest individual performances in league history.

Being a rookie in basketball and a rookie in politics are two different worlds and not comparative. Basketball playbook is generally known and anyone with skills and talent, even a rookie can excel. The people can afford to take the risks when it's just a game. But in politics, there are a lot of unknowns and not everyone with skills and talent can do a good job, and in all high probability, especially not a rookie. And the people cannot afford to take risks when their lives are at stake. Magic Johnson is a basketball rookie worthy of admiration. Obama is a political rookie worthy of reconsideration in the next election.

Magic Johnson should be the least person to comment on issues of great national and global interest. It does not matter how much of impact he made in basketball game. His judgment that put him in trouble that his is still in is a living resume of his "sound judgment". America is a premiere democratic clan, and those who are principal players in its politics deserve encomium from all-and-sundry. Magic needs to understand that all of the candidates vying for presidency on both parties are capable with their qualities to lead this country much more better than a disillusioned sports man or woman. We need to ensure that those who do not even understand the idioms of politics and governance don't distort this virile democratic process and derail the entire electioneering pact. These kind of perpetrators are essentially responsible for the empasse between Clinton's camp and Obama's. Let the political novices like Magic Johnson stay out of the process. If he insist on performing some magic, he may want to reconsider going back to the basketball court. He needs to leave this election for the political giants like Hillary; the most imposing political figure in our nation today, and Obama; the most enterprising black political enigma and iconoclast.

Another "old school" black backing Clinton because they're scared of even the POSSIBILITY of an Obama presidency. This is beyond sad...it borders on the criminal. Even if Hillary is nominated, me and many other black americans will not support her. These slights will be remembered, whether they're from her campaign or from surrogates!

The idea of Hillary Clinton being a 'veteran' is laughable as well as the prior writer's attempt to state that being a 'rookie' in basketball and politics are not comparable because 'not everyone with skills and talent can do a good job'. How this differs from sports beyond me, especially in the 'Sport' of Politics.
Hillary has failed to introduce a single piece of legislation of ANY substance in over 6 years in the Senate. Her 8 years in the White House did NOT include a TS security clearance and she was NOT part of ANY policies except her failed health insurance plan. Its like Magic Johnson's wife starting for him as a player because she watched all of the games in the stands.
Billary's supporters seek to demean Barack Obama's 'experience' while she has none except of failure. No wonder 50% of the Democrats don't trust her.
Another Kool-Aid drinker. If she had the backbone of Margaret Thatcher or the wiles of Golda Meir, then American's would trust her, but she doesn't so, whose the real rookie other than Billary, with her now ridiculous offer of $800 billion in 'bailouts' that YOU will pay for? Rookie? Right on. Barack Obama may not be Ronald Reagan, but I admire him for at least trying to break out of the fake change past offered by the Clintons.
