Murtha: U.S. doomed to defeat

Even if the "surge" in Iraq is working, says Rep. John P. Murtha, the war is still hopeless. S.A. Miller reports:

"Look at all the people that have been displaced, all the [lost] oil production, unemployment, all those type of things," said Rep. John P. Murtha, chairman of Appropriations defense subcommittee. "We can't win militarily."

The Pennsylvania Democrat conceded violence was down dramatically and some normalcy restored on Iraq's streets, but he said U.S. victory remains unattainable as long as Baghdad fails to pass national reconciliation laws.

"To change the political law, it doesn't seem to me you need the military stability," Mr. Murtha told reporters on Capitol Hill.

A red-letter link at the Drudge Report and a top headline at Hot Air, Miller's story prompts Ace of Spades to remark:
Isn't it funny that when the military situation is improving far more than anyone could have anticipated, Murtha's suddenly decided it's entirely irrelevant?
Better question: If U.S. military success in Iraq is important news, why are the big papers burying the story?

A note of caution: Watch out for a "Tet offensive" in Iraq.

-- Robert Stacy McCain, assistant national editor, The Washington Times

UPDATE 7:30 p.m.:

"The Great One," Mark Levin, just led the second hour of his nationally syndicated radio show by playing Martina McBride's rendition of "God Bless America," then reading Miller's story. Speaking of Murtha, Levin said: "This man is subversive."

Hey, Mark: This one's for you:

UPDATE 8 p.m.

Courtesy of Duane Patterson at Townhall.com, here's video of how Murtha opened his remarks:

Bloggers are gathering around Murtha's remarks like hungry pilgrims at Thanksgiving. The Free Republic crew is feasting on the turkey, as are the Villagers with Torches.

8:55 p.m. UPDATE

Jim's World joins the feast, and Bold Color Conservative asks if "Murtha missed the memo?"

Also chowing down: The Conservative Freedom Newsfeed, 123 Beta, Hang Right Politics and Cut and Run.

Looking at this objectively, you've really got to wonder who is advising Murtha. Again, courtesy of Duane Patterson, here's the transcript of Murtha's opening remarks:

This week, around our Thanksgiving tables, there will be two families: One who say they support the troops, and they do, but they have sacrificed very little. They haven't had their taxes raised, they haven't been drafted, and they don't really participate in the war. The other are military families who have husbands and wives, sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters in the war theater. It's them who shoulder the burden of the President's Iraq policy. America owes them our thanks in this Thanksgiving weekend.
Any way you slice that pumpkin pie, Murtha is dividing Americans into two categories: Those who support the war, and those who are fighting the war.

This ignores (or, rather, denies) the possibility that there are any troops or their families who support the war. The clear syllogism of Murtha's argument is that support for the war is bad, but volunteering to fight the war is good. But what greater way of supporting the war is there than volunteering to fight it? And there are such men.

As fruitless as it is to look for logic in Murtha's statement, the timing of his divisive statement is nuttier than a holiday fruitcake. Tuesday was a slow news day, Congress is going on recess, and (as at least one commenter has noted) even the New York Times is finally admitting that the surge seems to have produced positive results.

So what does "Abscam Jack" do? He serves up a gigantic helping of red meat, just as everybody gets ready to drive to grandma's for Thanksgiving. Those holiday travelers will turn on their radios, and guess what all the talk-show hosts will be talking about? Then, during commercial breaks in the football games, they'll click over to check Fox News, and guess what they'll be talking about?

One thing's for sure: Murtha's given the White House a major reason to be thankful this four-day holiday weekend.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY 1:15 a.m.:

Linked at Memeorandum, Say Anything, Right Voices and Sweetness & Light. And Sister Toldjah asks:

Can we question their patriotism yet?
Bryan at Hot Air links and comments:
So having your taxes raised somehow makes your support for the war more special? All that does is give Jack more of everyone else's money to play with. To call him "contemptible" is to define that word down.
Want some more gravy with that turkey?

Have several bi-partisan commisions come out and be very explicit, that in order to win in Iraq, we must win politically and stop violence with diplomacy.
Oh, yeah, diplomacy.
Is there any Republican whom has never gone to war or served in the military, able to answer this question without a bomb.
Thanks
Patriotic American.

Murtha, Reid, and Pelosi et.al., have gone far
beyond irresponsibility and are now regarded as just
plain stupid. Talk about willing suspension of
disbelief

Remember JIMMY, All diplomacy is, is saying "Nice Doggy!" While looking for a big enought rock.

Murtha is right. Bush said the reason for the surge was to bring about a secure environment so that the Iraqi government could obtain some political resolutions (benchmarks). They have not met any. Bush should not be allowed to constantly change the mission. Our troops completed his original mission years ago. The White House is calling on Congress to pass a bill giving them more money for Iraq with no strings attached. (Same old, same old) 70% of the people are calling on the White House to start bringing our troops home. It is beyond time to stop beating this Republican forced dead horse.

Democrats like murtha, pelosi( a first rate communist) is hell bent on seeing america lose in iraq. They could not stand it when petraus told congress that we were making progress in iraq. It kinda makes u wonder if this is the attitude they are going to have like saying we cant win or a ton of pre set time table pullout bills if we ever had a conflict with countries like china, north korea, iran, syiria. Democrats like murtha and pelosi should have learned from vietnam , and that is " stop playing potlitics with the troops". So i say this to u murtha " get over it, we are winning in iraq".

Sure, resurrect AlQaida and hand over all the Iraqis who risked death to vote to Iran's JAM and the jihadists. After all, a few million dead iraqis are a nice scarecrow to hang around the Republicans necks. More important to make Bush and the military losers than win a war. Spit on the graves of the dead , they deserve it---
If the Democrats secure defeat , the jihadists will thank them by killing their children last...
Exaggerating? The echoes of women burning to death and the screams of people trapped in the twin towers still rings in my ears..Hey, Murtha! What country were we in then? oh. We weren't? Guess we just deserve it for being Americans, then.....
To the DNC:
You killed three million vietnamese and Cambodians in 1975 and gave birth to radical Islam by kicking the Shah to the curb in 1979 and emboldening the Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan in 1980. We know you are craven cowards, but this time, the media can't shape the news...the cameras will record the slaughter, and you will not be immune from the backlash. Treason doesn't sit well with Americans, and your actions give aid and comfort to head-chopping child-raping and baking scumbags. You will be held to account. You won't get away clean this time.

Alright, here's how it is:

The Democrats, controlled and empowered by the far Left, have made Iraq into "the Republican/conservative war" or "Bush's war". That said, if the Iraq war fails, then the Right will lose credibility on foreign policy (which they've owned for a generation) and the rest of their platform will become quite irrelevant. They will have become "the party of that miserable war in Iraq that ended in complete failure". The Democrats will become "the party that was right all along", and they will do very well politically. (If you cannot understand this argument, then just take a look at the results of the 2006 election. The Democrats, who still represent many things that are widely unpopular with the American public, recruited everybody they could who was at least "anti-war" and rode that sentiment to a huge victory.) Furthermore, a failed war in Iraq will severely stain President Bush's legacy and serve as what the entire left will see as perfect punishment for their most despised enemy.

But most importantly, if the Iraq War actually goes well and Bush's plan for a sturdy democratic government in Iraq plays out successfully, then the Democratic Party will sink back into foreign policy oblivion and lose credibility on the issue for another generation. Remember how liberals once claimed the Berlin Wall and communism in Russia would remain intact forever?...the aftermath for Democrats if Iraq goes well will be the same as it was for them when the wall actually came down. Not only will Democrats suffer major political losses, the rest of their platform will have become in many ways irrelevant. They will become "the party of far left defeatists who were dead wrong (again) about the Iraq War". And President Bush and other Republicans will see their resilience paid off, their foreign policy vindicated, and enjoy a pretty favorable place in history. This scenario is the Left's absolute worst nightmare.

The surge in Iraq has definitely worked. Today's (11/19) New York Times- a major anti-Bush paper -has a practically glowing assessment of improvements in Iraq featured within. The Democrats are not only refusing to celebrate it, they're actually asserting that the surge has failed. And of course they are. They fiercely opposed the surge, and they have been proven wrong. The upfront and open truth is that good news in Iraq means bad news for Democrats, while bad news from Iraq means great news for them. (Remember how awful is was for Howard Dean back in '03 to have to hear the news that Saddam was captured?) The painful truth is that the left is rooting for the very same thing that the insurgent forces in Iraq are fighting for: an immediate withdrawl of American soldiers and a failed mission by the United States.

Bottom line: The Left and the party they call home are no longer just opposing America's war, they are depending on and fighting for total failure. May history treat them accordingly.

When those against the war throw the figure out that 70% of Americans are against it also, I then remember that about that same percentage love American Idol and Dancing With The Stars on TV, prefer to read People and US magazine, get their political viewpoint from The View and Oprah and couldn't point out the Middle East on a map if they had to. The majority of the American people just parrot what they hear from a very liberal media because they don't want to take the time to study for themselves. What they should remember is that, at the time of our invasion in Iraq, every major intelligence service on the planet thought that Iraq had WMD's. It was later revealed that Putin told President Bush directly that Saddam had plans to attack the US. Even the Democrat's on the Senate Intelligence Committee that saw the same intelligence as the President thought we should go to war. They just don't have the spine to see it through to the end and are so now invested in defeat that they cant acknowledge our success. Plus, the Bush Lied, People Died mantra is so much easier to remember. Gee, I wonder what’s going on with Britney today?

For sure it will be history to judge the shameful conduct of Murtha, Pelosi, Durbin, Kennedy, Reed, the NY Times, Washington Post, Hollywood elite and all of the far left wacko's that have wished for our defeat since the beginning of the war. They have a vested political interest in that defeat. They just can't stand the idea that we won't allow our forces to endure another defeat like Vietnam and that the surge is working. The left respects and worships leaders like Hugo Chavez while calling their own President a war criminal. I can't imagine ever serving with the likes of Murtha. It's hard to believe he was ever a Marine officer. God bless General Pertaus and all of our fighting forces world wide. Their honorable service is "priceless".

Would someone please read the current headlines from Iraq to this dinosaur? ...

PROUD AMERICAN
MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE

We need to be calling our senators and reps to voice our distain of Murtha and the dem's cutting off funding for our troops in a time of war. The dem party is playing politics with our troops' lives. We can't let that stand!

Disgraceful, that's all I can say. Does this traitor actually think that his veteran status gives him permission to use it to disparage the rest of us who still believe in the American ideal and those who fight for it?! First the Haditha travesty where he dishonored our brave troops (and has never apologized by the way for his disproven slanderous remarks), and now this comment? This man is a criminal plain in simple...not too differnt from a common street thug who kills indiscriminantly. The blood of those Americans who have died because of his careless, thoughtless, and politically pandering remarks, will need to be answered for.

So, Murtha was a marine. For whose side? Couldn't have been for ours. The man acknowledges progress in Iraq but still refuses to fund the troops as well as they should be? What's that garbage? Give a pull-out date? How about this, Mr. Murtha. The pull-out date is the date when we have resoundly defeated our enemies. Not one second sooner or later. If you were really a service man, you would know that is what war is all about. And, not to be calloused or insensitive to those who lost loved ones in the war, but the casualty rate in this war is nothing compared to the casualty rate of World War II. You need to get a grip, dude.

It is really ironic, isn't it, when people like Pat who mumble on about the "American ideal" get so incensed when someone excercises their free speech, a priceless component of that "American ideal" that our guys in Iraq are supposedly fighting and dying for? Oh, but I guess freedom is for Iraqis, not for Americans on the political left who dare to express an opinion different than that of the American political right! How dare these lefties! They should be lined against a wall and shot!!!

Come on, guys, do you have any idea how utterly hypocritical you all sound when you pillory guys like Murtha as being a "traitor"? If you really still "believe in the American ideal," you would be willing to "fight for" his right to say what he's saying, even if it sounds despicable to you.

Insurgent, defeatist, anti-American...is this what
Rethuglicans try to portray Democrats, or anyone else who opposes the Iraq quaqmire? John Murtha is a Patriot, who is trying to save American lives. Do people really believe that he hates America? Do you really believe that he wants
his country to lose. He is speaking the truth. He served his country honorably.
Unlike Mr.Bush or countless other Rethuglicans whom walk with their swagger, and bravado...and their deferments from the miliatary who love to send other kids to fight in war. Cowards...you've never seen war...never heard war...you've never seen a babies arms blown off...
Cowards...in your comfortable living rooms... watching the warm glow of Faux News...
Such a noble war...such a beautiful, romantic, noble war...We should all send our children to fight for such a noble cause...what say you?
Patriotic American

There is a word for Murtha and people like him who would bleed the people who are laying down their lives for him as well as all Americans, TRAITOR. It is one thing to debate and have a differing opinion. But to intentionally withhold any resources that would insure the safety and victory of our troops is aiding the enenmy. There is no warpped, moral relitivistic gray area on this issue. Murtha should be impeached! Okay, if he wants to play hard ball, let's dance Murtha. You want to withhold funds. So will we. Let's have the White House use executive orders to close down the futile departments of Energy, Education and the EPA and move those funds to the soldiers and sailors that need them to survive. You Democrats that would support this are nothing more than opportunitisic, power hungry traitors. While we are at it, let's do an investigation into who is providing money to them. Is it really all red-blooded American citizens?

Read the polls carefully. The last WashPost poll taken on this matter was basically broken into 2 parts: "do you want the troops to come home?" and "should they come home now?"; the answer to the former was "yes" and the latter "no".

Guess which question was breathlessly discussed on page 1 and which one was placed last on page A10 with no accompanying analysis?

When you think about it, if it wasn't for some very brave Americans aboard a hijacked airliner, we'd be listening to eulogies about the congressmen who died on 9-11 rather than the nonsense now emitted from their pie holes. Whenever you are in a fight and its got to be to win. Could the US "win" in Iraq - sure, in a day, if you define "win" the same way we did in August 1945. We define it differently now. Can we still win. Sure, we're doing it now in Iraq if not on the left side of the congress. There is a reason why the Founding Fathers made the President the Commander in Chief - the congress back then had its share of nincompoops. Before the surge the lefties in congress whined about Rumsfeld and not enough troops. When the troops were added they whined about bringing them home before they could succeed. I'd like to believe that the American people will deposit the current batch of congressional lefties in the dust bin of history next to the Berlin wall and Uncle Joe Stalin. We can only hope.

Jack "never met a kick back I didn't like" Murtha, who hides behind a cloak of Marine respectability, but who is in reality clearly an unpatriotic, highly partisan leftist, is hardly one to point fingers. Any credibility he has was long ago lost in the Abscam debacle. I still can't believe he wasn't indicted over that. He needs to resign and fade away.

The Democratic Party wants the USA to LOSE!!!!

They will not recognize ANYTHING that makes President Bush and our troops and our policy look the least bit successful.

They put their political ambitions ahead of the country.

It is despicable.

Mr Morrow. The difference in my free speech vs that of the slug Murtha is that my free speech doesn't enable our enemies and give them another misguided justification to kill Americans. Murtha is no American nor does he understand that his remarks, far more than mine, have deadly consequences to those who fight so valiantly to protect our free speech and the American Ideal you find necessary to quote. Perhaps because it is too quaint for you? Murtha is a traitor and no I'll never fight for his right to slander and endanger the lives of those willing to risk theirs for mine.

Obviously, "Gurtha" is the biggest and the grossest Porker at the Congressional trough.

Inspite of his corruption and his heavy use of earmarking bribery; We should also hold the people of his morally challanged Penn District accountable, as well. Murtha's constituent "accomplicies" consistently re-elect that Blow-hard, Treasonous old Fraud. Why would those voters keep Murtha in office, unless they are, themselves, greedy hypocrites, misguided "patriots" and/or just stuck on stupid...

I wish DOD would invent a smart bomb that would wise people up.

Here are the minimum specs:

-Airborn dispersed IQ enhancer w/ 1000 ppm @ 1 mile radius ( memory enhancing organic compounds including fish oil)

- Active and passive stupidity sensors w/ search and destroy mode.

- Attitude adjusters ( pre flight programable )

- Hypocracy eliminator ( pre flight programable)

- anti-visual dilusion mode and stealth mode capable.

- Yardapult launched by any citizen anywhere anytime, and in full compliance w/ second ammendment of US constitution.
( cruise missile and drone varients-DOD applications only)

There are no lack of test subjects for development purposes within the halls of Congress, but some are more in need of targeting than others apparently.

On that note folks, I'll leave you all to enjoy your upcoming L-triptophan food comas....(chuckle).

Obviously, Gurtha is the most obnoxious Dim weapons of mass corruption in DC...No wonder he is one of Pelosi's favorites. However, The old blowhard has to bribe the Dimwits back home every few years in order to stay in office. Maybe enough of his pork-recipient, voting constistuents "accomplices" will get their heads out of their ***** in the near future..

Obviously, Jack-John Murtha must be the most obnoxious Dim weapon of mass corruption in DC.. However, The old Blow Hard has to bribe the Dimwits back home every few years so they will keep him in office. Hopefully next time, enough of his pork-recipient, voting constituent "accomplices" may get their heads out of their ***** and vote for someone worthwhile.

It is really too bad Murtha was not convicted thirty-odd years ago for accepting an abscam bribe. It is even worse that sedition laws were allowed to lapse. All that we can hope for now is for is that Murtha will get what he deserves with the defamation suit brought against him by those now exonerated marines he wanted convicted even before he knew any of the facts. Ideally, he would at least face censure of the highest order by colleagues. Unfortunately, none of them has the guts to even bring this up.

I always thought that one of the major reasons for staying in Iraq was to defeat that miserable group of killers known as "al Qaeda in Iraq." True, it wasn't the primary reason why we went into Iraq, but after we got there the war turned into a major confrontation between the US military and al Qaeda. This is the same group that attacked us on 9/11 and sponsors horrible acts of terrorism all over the world. So why is it so terrible to stay in Iraq and pound the crap out of those killers? In handing Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda a major defeat in Iraq (which is what is happening right now), we are dealing a major blow to Muslim jihadists and terrorists. What is so terrible about that? We should be celebrating that we have al Qaeda on the run and that they are about to suffer a major defeat in Iraq, thanks primarily to the surge and to our new counterinsurgency strategies that we've implemented under General Petraeus. It is definitely worth staying in Iraq if we can keep defeating the people who are trying to kill us. In addition, if we leave Iraq before the job is done and we allow the terrorists to regroup and rearm, what do you think they will do once that happens? Of course they will try to overthrow the Iraqi government, terrorize the people of Iraq, and then try to export their very special brand of terror once again to both the United States and Europe. We need to stay in Iraq to crush these animals and they have to be soundly defeated so that they will not be able to come back to life to threaten anyone or any nation. Only then will we be able to declare "Mission Accomplished."
