From the pool: Bush speaks at Heritage Foundation

Here's the pool report from this afternoon's speech in Washington.

Motorcade went out of White House at 12:31, Kevin Sullivan and Barry Jackson accompanying POTUS (President of the United States) in the limo. Traveled east on Constitution past the Capitol — lots of bystanders and a pack of goofy-looking Segway riders.

Motorcade arrived at the Heritage Foundation at 12:38 and rushed into the building as the din of presidential music blasted over loudspeakers competed/combined with shouts of "War criminal" to create quite a noisescape.

The protesters were our old friends, Code Pink-Medea Benjamin and the now infamous Desiree "bloody hands" Ali-Fairooz, along with a few others. Another person wearing a Bush mask, with blood on the chin, a "war criminal" t-shirt, and a black cape, of all things, walked around giving the Nazi salute.

Inside, Ed Feulner, Heritage Foundation President, walked out just before POTUS at 12:45 p.m. POTUS got a loud and sustained standing ovation from the crowd in the Lehrman Auditorium, a half-moon shaped room that seats 250. POTUS spoke in front of a large blue blackdrop with the Heritage logo, with two American flags behind him on either side.

Mr. Fulner made no mistake about whether he supports POTUS or not, saying, "You are welcome and will always be welcome at the Heritage Foundation," and POTUS received another standing ovation.

POTUS gave essentially the speech he outlined this morning in the Oval: We are still at war, and Congress needs to stop "stalling" (POTUS' word) on the attorney general, FISA, DOD approps and the war supplemental. But he did offer a specific rebuke to the Democratic leadership's alliance of sorts with the rising netroots/progressive/far left wing of the party (read Matt Bai's "The Argument" for more on that).

"Some in Washington should spend more time responding to the warnings of … Osama bin Laden and the request of commanders on the ground and less time responding to the demands of Moveon.org bloggers and Code Pink protesters," POTUS said.

One other moment of interest. When POTUS spoke about interrogation techniques, there seemed to be some tension in the room: Heritage represents the evangelical Christian voting bloc perhaps more than any other think tank. With all the controversy over waterboarding and whether U.S. officials have engaged in torture, you would expect some in the audience to have, at the least, lots of questions about this topic.

But when POTUS said "the procedures used in this program are safe, they are lawful, and they are necessary," the room burst into applause.

At 1:16 the motorcade blew back to the White House amid a group of bystanders and a handful of protesters. How's this for dissonance: a group of Code-Pinkers stood yelling "War criminal" and holding a sign saying, "Bring the troops home now," and right next to them, sitting outside at a bagel shop, a guy and a gal yelped and high-fived as POTUS drove by.

There was the same presidential music playing on a loudspeaker outside Heritage, but it wasn't clear whether that was part of the Code Pink production or whether it was done by Heritage to drown out the protesters.

The five-minute ride back along Constitution was lined with a lot of people — some tourists but a lot of workers enjoying the warm weather — a few of whom waved and took pictures.

POTUS returned to the Oval Office with Jackson and Sullivan around 1:22 p.m.

Right on Mr. President.

However, there is one thing I would question you about if I had the chance, why in the name of all that's good and sacred, are you continueing to push the Israelis into giving up the land God gave them as their inheritance? It states it plainly in the Bible, God gave that land to His people Israel. If they give it to the PA or any of their Middle East enemies, they will have no means of defense. If you will read the Bible you will find that the land of Israel belongs to them and them alone, not the PA and not the muslims. Josh. 1:3 and 4
