House Homeland Security Committee staffers are on a peculiar mission to study "public health issues at events involving mass gatherings," which has personally insulted Rep. Robin Hayes of Concord, North Carolina.
The event: NASCAR.
The rub: the requirement that the Democrat and Republican staffers attending first be immunized against Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, tetanus, diphtheria, and influenza.
"I have never heard of immunizations for domestic travel, and as the representative for Concord, North Carolina, I feel compelled to ask why the heck the committee feels that immunizations are needed to travel to my hometown," Mr. Hayes, a Republican, said in a letter to Rep. Bennie Thompson, Mississippi Democrat and committee chairman.
"I have been to numerous NASCAR races, and the folks who attend these events certainly do not pose any health hazard to congressional staffers or anyone else," Mr. Hayes said.
A committee staffer says that the Republican staffers have declined the shots but that two Democrat staffers were immunized before attending the race at Talladega last weekend.
A phone call to the committee spokesman was not returned.

Posted by Lewinsky | October 11, 2007 9:00 AM
So, these "staffers' won a free trip to NASCAR and a chance to participate in an early HillaryCare preventive medical plan by getting immunized for free? You can bet that none of the "staffers" paid for any of it. Ain't the political life sweet?
BTW, I wonder if immunization will be required by all the attendees of the Democratic National Convention next year?

I was just about worked up into a good snit over this. Democratic staffers getting immunized prior to attending a NASCAR event as if they were travelling to a foreign country? Then it occurred to me that the real America that can be found surrounding any NASCAR track during an event *IS* a foreign country to them. Now we have a new form of entertainment to play at Martinsville when we go down there in a couple weeks... Spot the DEM. I do hope they won't be wearing surgical masks as this will make it too easy. Hey burdhurd, I like it! Where can I get my FEE-VAH hat? :)

I wish I could say I was surprised, but I'm not.
In the early 70s, there was a BMW driver in the old Trans-Am named Nick Craw (may have the spelling off on that one). In the late 70s, he was nominated to be head of the Peace Corps. He had troubles in the confirmation hearings because Congressional staffers had noted in the Congressmen's briefing materials that he participated in "questionable activities" i.e. auto racing.

Fried Bologna and mayo sandwiches. Drunks everywhere. Real family stuff. No need to be angry at the Democrats take a look at your own house and clean it up. I'd venture to say they far exceed the average dem voter. Most dem's stand around with their hands out looking for the government give away freebie. Where the average NASCAR fans are the ones footing the bill for the democratic give away programs. So now it is implied that we the NASCAR fan are carriers of diseases?
I'd suggest it's the other way around! WE THE NASCAR FAN need them immunized to be free of the illnesses they may bring to US!! Look at how the diseases they carry have effected their ability to think clearly or is that inbreeding?

Maybe all that praying they do before that start of NASCAR races is only meant to protect the drivers from having accidents. They need to expand the before-race prayers to include spectators, and include specific wording asking God to protect them from "Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, tetanus, diphtheria, and influenza."
Posted by billyjoe | October 11, 2007 1:48 PM

Whooooweeee democratic snobbery rears its ugly impoverished head.
According to CNN.com, the average ticket price for a NASCAR event in 2005 was $88. That’s more than four times as expensive as the average ticket price for Major League Baseball, which according to the group, Team Marketing Report, was just $21.17 in '05. TMG listed the average ticket price for the NBA at $44.68 a year ago, and the average ticket price for an NFL game as recently as 2003 was $52.95.
Remember, those figures are for tickets only. NASCAR fans spend much more on hotels, gas and meals during the course of a race weekend.
I think there is more chance of NASCAR fans catching some sickness from inner city, welfare Democrats .... than the other way round. After taking care of their health needs and costs, NASCAR fans obviously have much more disposable income. Makes sense that they would take care of their health far better.
Posted by C williams | October 11, 2007 1:49 PM

If a Dem staffer went to one of these events and caught cold, then they'd have to go to the Doctor. Then, they would see the medical system in America actually works. Then, they'd be left without one of their tent poles. With all those shots, at government expense, they are left with the impression that the government provided health care prevented them from all those nasty bugs and therefore, "Government healthcare works!"
Posted by JMP | October 11, 2007 1:52 PM

Awww, the Rednecks are in a huff. I am no Democrat (not a Republican either, thank GOD!), but even I have to admit that some of the people that frequent these races look like they need to be hosed down, de-loused and sanitized. Sorry if the truth hurts, but there it is. Also, do you think your precious Rep. Robin Hayes watches a race from the stands, with the common folk? No siree, he is in a luxury box, eating and drinking for free, with ice cold ac.
Face it guys, NASCAR is a Redneck sport, and some Rednecks would scare Linda Blair. Oh, and recognize that NASCAR is not a sport...its car racing. Its driving around in circles at high speed. Not much athletic ability required there.

Obviously Mr. Hayes hasn't been in the grandstands at Concord recently, only up in the VIP suites. Thousands of illegal aliens run around his 'hometown' and our infectious disease rates are up significantly. That's what happens when you passively allow 750,000 invaders to squat at your front door.

I think before you all bring out the nooses and tar & feathers, maybe you should hear the whole story, which was probably something about getting immunizations for the flu before going to large gatherings, which of course, has been twisted into some "insult" by the GOP, which most of you morons take as scripture and quickly start mud-slinging.

Nascar is a silly sport.
I mean, it is an absolute fact that Formula One is a more accomplished discipline, and that the engineering/technical aspect is second to none(even outside the realm of motorsport) and that the cars brutally outperform a stock car, and that it has a far larger fanbase, but that really means nothing to someone who likes Nascar more.
Nascar fans tend to vote Republican as their smaller minds are blind to the simple truths.
All Nascar fans can do is go round and round a oval circuit totally incapable of naviagting the twists and turns of every day life.
Keep wearing those blinkers and keep embarrasing your Country.
Posted by Dbeall | October 11, 2007 2:42 PM

It can be QUITE dangerous-
The RELIGIOUS FERVOR presenting with prayer before every race... this one spreads fast, you should see ALL THE HEADS BOWED IN UNISON!!!
The RABID PATRIOTISM what with flyovers, the National Anthem and constant mention of "our troops".
I can see the cause for concern. It's enough to make any yellow blooded american SICK!
Come to think of it... I do come down with two things gauranteed at EVERY race I go to:
My eyes tear up and I get goosebumps as everyone prays before the race and as our men and women in uniform present our colors, sing our anthem and those magnificent jets, defenders of our freedom SCREAM overhead.
Pass the purell for the House Homeland Security committee and
GOD BLESS AMERICA!

Problem for CBS was EVERYONE there treated them with respect and courtesy-vendors, spectators everyone.Even when the actors put on like they needed an ass whippin really bad-everyone was nice. I was there as consultant for a Homeland Security contract and saw it all. Local law were on them like a fat kid on cake shadowing them to protect them-not harrass them. The Dems welcome illegal alliens that carry all manner of strange diseases to infect us. This is clearly just to insult real Americans. The Dems are not concerned about our health. Third world diseases are rampant in Southern California due to the illegals.
Posted by Mary Lou | October 11, 2007 3:19 PM
My co-worker, Frank P., has been to NASCAR races, and he believes the immunizations are not such a bad idea. This is not to say there is anything wrong with the representative's constituents, only that a gathering with so many people is likely to include at least some individuals with infectious agents. He has an extensive background in infectious agents, and suggests that, for example, airports would be an ideal place for terrorists to spread disease in a rapid fashion. Likewise, a NASCAR race could easily be a staging ground for a terrorist "biological" attack. Laugh now if you like, but it won't be quite as funny, on the front page...

Are you kidding me? Have you seen the folks that attend these events? The public sex that goes on there? Outdoor bathrooms. And you and I both know that everybody is not going to use the porta potty. Heck yeah there's the possibility of disease there! I don't blame'em!

Peculiar? I'll say. Aside from the Democrats afraid of Nascar cooties, why is health inspecting a priority of the congressional HS committee and why are our tax-dollars being wasted on this nonsense?

that way of them comtaminating the NASCAR crowd with

Posted by Briarhopper | October 11, 2007 3:31 PM
The full story was explained that this was a precaution because they would be inspecting emergency services areas for crisis situations, such as a terrorist event. But that really isn't a good explanation. A good explanation would be that the immunizations were offered prior to any or all such inspections at anykind of event, not just NASCAR races. Were inspections done at Madison Square Gardens or Yankee Satdium? And if so, were the staffers offered shots before that? If not, it is an overt slight toward NASCAR fans in my opinion. And foolish, as all educated people know germs and viruses can be anywhere, like in the food we buy in upscale gorcers, or the lice and scabies found in clothes in department stores after others have tried them on. They can claim it was a standard or needed safety precaution, but unless it is was done or offered before every such "inspection," that argument is tripe.

Isn't North Carolina where anyone at all can get a driver license, even with a matricular consular card (an "ID" from the Mexican consulate)? People who come here illegally are not subject to a physical exam. Many of them come from poor countries. Many of them have never seen a doctor. Many of them carry communicable diseases. They then infect Americans. Many American children lately are not immunized against certain of these diseases because they've been told that the vaccines are worse than the disease. That is utter nonsense but try changing their minds before they lose a child to pertussis.
Liberals are very multi-culturally tolerant -- unless the culture is "NASCAR." They'll sooner accept shari'a than Bubba.

Let's not forget that it was the REPUBLICAN party that got the nation out of the Civil War, and it was the REPUBLICAN party that got the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments (respectively, ending slavery; implementing civil rights in the states; and voting rights for former slaves) ratified against the UNIFORM opposition of the Democratic party. The Republicans have a long history of equality; the Democrats, a long history of bigotry. Convenient how the MSM neglects to mention that, isn't it?

I believe there is concern for this. We've had a forewarned, self-centered, yuppie-scum-lawyer expose people to a highly virulent form of TB and and a illegal immigrant with the same illness, who also exposed people to the same thing - and he tried to refuse treatment and fought extradition back to his home country. Germ warfare will be disbursed in large public gatherings by someone sitting next you you in order to transport it quickly to the general public. Want to do something to help air pollution - put your hand over mouth when you cough.
Posted by Jmo | October 11, 2007 4:13 PM
As a person who has attended various types of races, from Mud-Bogging to Demolition Derby and beyond :o) I can assure you, the most you might get from anyone attending would be the flu if they happened to cough while talking directly to/at you, i.e., the same possibility during any social exchange, art performance or sports event. Personally, the call for immunization stems from ignorance... my opinion: the ones who created that caveat need 'to get out more' ... the world is not crawling w/'mean' or 'stealth' germs just waiting for bodies to pass by. If a person is so concerned but still wants to attend an event... why not do what's been seen online in world-wide news reports: wear a 'hospital' mask that covers one's nose and mouth. A person could always decorate their mask so it resembles that portion of a person's face covered by the mask :o) May all attendees enjoy themselves immensely at these upcoming events--sounds like *fun*

If you think that NASCAR is all about poor rednecks drinking beer, think again. Modern NASCAR is more corporate than the old Indy car CART series ever dreamed of being. At $45 per ticket for seats a mile away from the start finish line, $1000 for an infield camping spot, and $2000 or more for some suite tickets for some races, the "redneck mardi gras" is certainly a thing of the past.

As a northerner, I am constantly shocked by the bigotry and pretentiousness of some people regarding our southern neighbors, some, but not all of course, from supposedly "tolerant" liberals. Maybe there was a case of illness reported previously, I'm not sure of the circumstances, but surely it would be discounted as an isolated case?
I'm not convinced that this is blatant prejudice, having only heard one part of the story, but regardless of the circumstances bigotry by region should be examined more closely.
Posted by A Northerner | October 11, 2007 4:34 PM
I agree with the immunizations for the Democrat staffers as it is much cheaper to immunize them that to immunize the good Americans who were at the race and could possibly have been infected by those democrats!
Posted by paul richards | October 11, 2007 4:34 PM
This is a very misleading story. The reason that the immunizations were suggested was that the staffers would be looking at emergency preparedness locations, such as emergency rooms, and that is a standard precaution for those who will be behind the scenes in such areas.
Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., who chairs the Homeland Security panel"
Since committee staff members are visiting hospital and other health-care facilities available at or near these venues, including areas where groups of people are detained before being transferred to other off-site facilities, I believe that the recommendation (not requirement) that our congressional staff receive these same immunizations was sound," Thompson said in a letter responding to Hayes issued Wednesday.
"I am sure you would agree that providing immunizations to personnel involved in public safety is good public health policy, and there is no need to exclude staff from taking the preventative measures that the public health community recommends -- regardless of why and where mass gatherings are taking place,"
Let's do our homework, guys ...
Posted by Drew Arrowood | October 11, 2007 4:34 PM
How come the congressional staffers don't get immunized when they go to pander to a group of illegal aliens? They are the ones carrying the virulent diseases around! They walk right into the country with no health checks at all!
Posted by itch | October 11, 2007 4:34 PM
Robin Hayes is poorly informed. It's standard operating procedure to recommend all kinds of precautions and immunizations...they're not required but it's the same thing as giving kids permission slips for field trips (i.e. to avoid negligence liability). Congressional staffers going to the South Bronx, Appalachia, etc. have had similar recommendations and Reps always get peeved.
Still, this particular recommendation came directly from Homeland Security, which as an executive agency (and a newly created one at that) is headed solely by Bush Administration appointees. So, basically, stop claiming this is some sort of Democrats hating on NASCAR. It's just incompetence from the current administration which continues its track record of being divisive and incompetent...from what I can see the defining characteristics of Republicans.

Can ANY of you read? The article says:
"The rub: the requirement that the Democrat and Republican staffers attending first be immunized against Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, tetanus, diphtheria, and influenza."
The COMMITTEE instituted the requirement and it requires Democrats AND Republicans to be immunized.
Is it stupid? Yes. Was it something the Democrats came up with? No. The Committee came up with it. Does it apply to Democrats only? No.
Are the commenters to this story incapable of understanding a clearly-written story? Yes.
Who needs FACTS when it's SO much fun to misinterpret things to attack your political opponents?

Democrats and Republicans...
So many foul things to say about Democrats, but you forget these politicians Republican or Democrat are all out for themselves. Greedy, fighting, arrogant assholes are all supposed to be public servants, which really embarrasses me, because a real public servant is a police officer and firefighter. They serve our public by placing their lives in harms way each and everyday. Politicians with their arrogance and free ticket have over inflated incomes, benefits they should not be allowed and allowances and gratuities that should be illegal.
This entire arguement about Democrats being this and that is redundant, when fact is they are from the very same melting pot of humanity as Republicansd and the rest of us.
Beleiving anything else is plain iggnorant!!!

Its a fact. In '96 I visited for a month in Harrison AK and came down with a fever everyone said was mumps. Since, it has returned a number of times. Mumps don't recur nor does one get mumps a number of years after being innoculated for mumps. I still have instances of sickening fever with the swellings that go with it. Its painful and debilitating. I wasn't around crowds per se but I did sell Avon so I saw a number of people who were as normal as I am. I don't know how I got the fever nor what it is. I've never seen a doctor for it because they won't hear of it.
The US has done well in eleminating things like Malaria but we are having an influx of people who appear to be well but are carrying low grade fevers and infections. By low grade I mean not obviously debilitative. Its not especially among poor people or immigrants but we don't have a lot of the immunitatives to things they are used to. We also live in a sterile society comparitively. We expect people to wash their hands and dishes we are served to be handled in certain ways. Many people in other societies are used to living around dirt and contamination and their immunititaves are in better shape than ours are. For instance, our water is treated, theirs is not yet they live and even thrive but bring unheard of illnesses to us.
Its no one's "fault" but we had better get in shape because we have sickly among us we love and care for that are unable to fight off such infections and fevers.
The recurring fever I have still returns but it is not so bad as it was initially. It probably won't kill me and in time I will be able to live with it without knowing I have anything. But I know to be careful where I go, keep the mosquitoes away. I don't eat at fast food restaurants, in fact I rarely eat out at all. I cover my face if I can and wear gloves in addition to washing often. I pay more attention, we all need to pay more attention to what we handle and how we keep contaminants away from us.
We live in a society where certain members take steroids and lower their immunities. Then they spread colds to the rest of us that carry a heavy load of infection we're not ready for. Its the world we live in, not the people especially. Its the world in general, not "cooties".

But then, liberal democrats would never ever think that there are real, normal people in these places.

I don't think they are bigoted against nascar itself. It's probably that the average educational level and IQ of nascar fans tends to be lower than average. As such, it attracts a higher percentage of people who engage in high risk activities. Most nascar fans are very conservative as the stock car thing originated in the deep South, among the poorest and least sophisticated people in America. Again, most nascar fans are honest and decent people, but let's acknowledge that disease is more prevelant among the ignorant and poorly educated.

Well, count me then because I'm a democrat and a diehard NASCAR fan who would never think of getting shots before a race ... well ok, maybe before Talladega.
Posted by Steve | October 11, 2007 5:43 PM
They are not going to NASCAR specifically, they are going to examine the effects of the large crowding the area experiences during NASCAR.
Ie: Hospitals, food stands, restaurants, public transport and so on. The places you will expect out breaks of these kinds in the first place.
So to be immunized aint about the crowds, its the infrastructure and whether it can cope.
Besides, most of the stuff they got shots for is food and water related.
Posted by N.N | October 11, 2007 5:44 PM
I'd be more worried about the mental stunting of actually talking to NASCAR fans than catching a disease from one.

http://video1.washingtontimes.com/fishwrap/2007/10/not_nascar_cooties.html
The staffers were on a mission to study public safety at large events.
"Since committee staff members are visiting hospital and other health-care facilities available at or near these venues, including areas where groups of people are detained before being transferred to other off-site facilities, I believe that the recommendation (not requirement) that our congressional staff receive these same immunizations was sound," Mr. Thompson said.

Some people like to watch cars go around and around and around. They get so excited that they might forget to wash their hands properly after using the facilities . . . just so they can return to watch the same cars go around and around again.
So in this, the shots make sense. Maybe it should be part of the price of admission.

Most of the NASCAR fans are in need someone to lead them out of the white trash, health hazard stadium that they inhabit each weekend. Anyone dumb enough to watch something going in circles probably needs lots of shots.

Dont ya'll get it? The dems are there to SPREAD their germs. They hate america and they are in business with the anti-american countries to bring america to its death. Why do you think there are so many e-coli beef out there? Dems hate meat eaters. That is just ONE example. DUH

Could you imagine the outrage if they had been told to get those shots before visiting a Oakland Raiders game?
Or maybe some lame hippy woodstockish event.

If this would have been pointed towards a black person Jessie Jackson And Al Sharpten would be in a Million man March towards washington with all the dems leading the way while holding the ACLU'S hand. But being white and a so called nascar redneck from the south its ok to talk smack against us.why stop at getting shots before a race. Why not get shots every time you get ready to go below the mason dixion line so you can make dam sure you dont catch anything... But I have a even better idea. keep your bigot ass out of north carolina and the south period. You are not welcomed.Oh and don't bother coming to a race either we don't want you there.
Because your the slow lame ass and you sure wouldn't understand the whole racing concept anyway.....It's A Southern Thang yall.

did you guys ever think that maybe they know something we dont about the health risks of those events? The committee is made up of Repubs and democrats.
And by the way its not bigoted to infer that the southern red states are at a higher risk for these infections because the fact remains that Southern red states are much less educated and less wealthy then the other states. They also have much larger occurances of Divorce, Abortion, WELFARE recipients and single parent families.
Hell, youd technically be a 3rd world country in 10 years if it wasnt for California and the northeast.

Rolling on the floor laughing!! I've been a devout NASCAR fan for years (and I'm only a teen) and NASCAR cooties is like being back in the 1st grade. When I get my license, I'll drive to the Dems' houses and do a burnout in their driveway, tearin' up their lawns :D!!!! "BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY!!!"

Wow... Our congress men an women need a booster SHOT JUST TO VISIT A NASCAR show, give me a break! I wonder if they get a shot when they visit the restroom??? Or they go with a Hooker? I wonder it there is a booster they can take to STOP LYING TO THE PUBLIC?? Whatever it is that they have they surely need a booster... what you think?

Oh we get Robin Hayes up in arms over some shots but he is more than willing to sell his soul and everyone elses for that matter at the altar of free trade to sell out his own constituents' jobs. Whoever votes for this lying bozo is nuts. I wouldn't vote for him if his opponent was a bonafide communist if that's what it took to get this neo-con elitist out of office.
