Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid is no fan of Rush Limbaugh, but the Nevada Democrat praised the conservative radio talk-show host on the Senate floor Friday for raising more than $2 million for charity — by auctioning on eBay a letter in which Reid condemns Limbaugh.
"I think it's really good that this money on eBay is going to be raised for this purpose," Reid said. "Everyone knows that Rush Limbaugh and I don't agree on everything in life, and maybe that is kind of an understatement.
"But without qualification Mark Mays, the owner of the [Clear Channel Communications] network ... [and] Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they're auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause."
Limbaugh has pledged to donate the auction proceeds to the Marine Corps-Law Enforcement Foundation, which provides financial assistance to the children of fallen Marines and federal law enforcement officers.
Reid also encouraged "anyone interested with the means to consider contributing to this worthwhile cause."
"I stongly believe when we can put our differences aside, even Harry Reid and Rush Limbaugh, we should do that and try to accomplish good things for the American people."
The letter, which was co-signed by 40 Democratic senators and sent to Mark Mays, whose network syndicates Limbaugh's show, condemned Limbaugh for comments he made "characterizing troops who speak out against the war as phony soliders."
Limbaugh has denied the accusation and said he was referring to anti-war activist Jesse Adam Macbeth, who falsely claimed to have participated in war crimes while in Iraq.
By early Friday afternoon, the letter had received a bid of $2.1 million. The auction will close later today.

What's not being said here is that Mr. Limbaugh has promised to match, with his own money, whatever the final amount of the EBay bid. Thus the charity will receive at least 4.2 mil. Democrats such as Sen Reid should consider doing the same, if they think the charity is worthwhile.

United? Come on Harry, Rush is making you look like even more of a fool than you already are.
Great PR move by Rush!

Good to see that the money is going to a good cause.

Both Reid and this article call him "Mark May". Do some editing and you'll find his last name is "Mays".

What a miserable excuse for space and definition of shameless cowardice that skunk Harry Reid is.
The war was lost a long time ago according to that tiny despot. Now he wants to join forces and get credit for his stupidity and arrogance! I think most of us realise like Al Gore, This Little Emperor has NO CLOTHES.

Reid had the chutzpah to try and claim credit by insinuating that he and Limbaugh had "buried the hatchet" and were in some sort of vague partnership to raise funds for a worthy charity. He lied about what Limbaugh said, tried to get him fired, still hasn't apologized for smearing him and then attempted to claim some credit for the unexpectedly positive outcome. I don't care where you stand in the political spectrum, that's just plain wrong.
Under the circumstances, I think Mr. Limbaugh deserves the last word here:
"It wasn't your letter, Senator Reid, that raised this money, it was the blatant abuse of power by you and your Democratic colleagues that is unprecedented in modern American history."

Let me tell a story:
The Goldman family decides to auction off the bloody knife in order to raise awareness of the evils of violence, and donate the proceeds to a charity that supports the children of murder victims. Then O.J. Simpson comes along and says he is glad "we can put aside our differences" and how he is proud to have played such an integral part in making such a "noble" charitable cause possible.
What could possibly bring ANYone to assume they are "united in cause"???????

The letter was not criticizing Rush. It was an attempt of congress to muffle their number 1 media critic. The senate had no right to condemn the words of a private citizen. This is an extremely important document. Very historical!

I'm not a big fan of Rush Limbaugh but you have to admire this masterstroke. He is as good at helping the democrats make fools of themselves as Bill Clinton was in tweaking the republicans when he was in office.

Harry Reid was schooled by Rush Limbaugh. This is an obvious and poor attempt of Damage Control by Reid.
Perhaps some good will come of all this. Sen Reid should acknowledge the lesson and begin doing the work of the people instead of doing the bidding of MediaMatters and MoveOn.
If he continues on his present course, he will certainly end up with nothing to do but go fishing with Tom Dashle.

Senator Reid and the rest of the Demos who signed this letter illustrate just how useless these people are to saving America. To spend time attacking any radio show host illustrates their mental ability to make themselves relavent. God help us.

Harry Reid has made a transparent attempt to hang on the coat tails of Rush's Triumph. Harry needs to pick on the small and weak.

Harry Reid's comments today bring dishonor on him and his position as a Senator and as majority leader. He has already dishonored our military by suggesting we have lost the war in Iraq. I know he has done similar things in the past but he is acheiving new levels of disgrace.
Rush Limbaugh auctioned the letter that Reid and forty other Senators wrote to the owner of his radio syndication in an effort to impede free speech. What happened to the oath that he and the others took to support and defend the Constitution? Last time I checked that included the First Amendment. Although I have not seen the letter, I understand that Senators Clinton and Obama also signed. Are they not running for the nomination so they can stand for election to defend our Constitution as President? They should be ashamed and they should apologize for attacking the free speech rights of a private citizen.
I appreciate your correspondent's tongue in cheek suggestion that 'Rush, Reid united in cause'. Of course, anyone paying attention knows that the effort for the charity came from Rush and Harry Reid had nothing to do with it.

Reid also encouraged "anyone interested with the means to consider contributing to this worthwhile cause."
Too bad Reid himself isn't going to "contribute to this worthwhile cause."

It's "Mays", by the way, Mr. Reid. You should have known that considering you wrote a letter to him and allegedly spoke to him.
What's all the "we" business, Mr. Reid? There's no "we" about it....unless you are trying to include yourself in the same caliber of good-hearted, PRIVATE CITIZENS who actually give a damn about our military and law enforcement...AND take the credit for the fund raising??? You really ARE sick.

As Rush said Harry, it's "Mays" not "May"

I wish that the Dems in both houses would do something other than just go on and on with endless partisan politics. C'mon guys you've got the floor, and the committees, why don't you do something worthwhile instead of spending all your time trying to stifle the 1st amendment rights of anyone whom disagrees with you?

OL' DINGY STEPPED IN IT AGAIN, AND THE OTHER SIGNATORIES GOT PULLED DOWN, TOO - WHAT GREAT POLITICAL THEATRE! FLASH TO ALL DEMS AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL - TRY AND SCREW WITH RUSH AND YOU'LL FAIL MISERABLY. REMEMBER, RESISTANCE IS FUTILE!!

Is Sean Lengell on Reid's PR staff? You missed the entire story here, sir. Reid is shameless in his attempt to salvage what little credibility he has left, and the Times is his willing accomplice by not telling the whole story. I thought that was why we had the Washington Post in town.

"Reid, Limbaugh united in cause"
With That Head Line, Mr.Sean Lengell What lib point are you trying to make?

harry reid you and fourty other sens.were invited to be part of the process by doing as Rush has, by matching the $2100000100.00.I`m sure
since you have included yourself, the money is on the way.

After reading some of these comments, it's apparent that some people don't recognize sarcasm when they see it. Harry Reid and Rush Limbaugh "united in cause," when the subject of the "cause" is a letter by Reid wrongly criticizing Rush? Come on! Can't anybody see the sarcasm there?

Well this isn't the first time Harry 'the fairy' Reid tried to supress free speech...

Harry Reid and Rush Limbaugh are not united in cause, and if you don't believe it go ask Rush. Rush's handling of this Dem debaucle was brilliant. He could not have made the people who signed that letter look like bigger fools. Reid trying to take credit for it shows he still has his head stuck some place where the sun doesn't shine.

"united?" united indeed. United in the same way that the Nazi SS and the Jews were both "united" in the Holocaust.

How low have we sunk? The Senate Majority Leader, presidential wannabes, and a flock of followers abandon the ship of state for a week in a flagrant display of arrogant abuse of power against a private citizen, probably unheard of in the history of this country. Harry Reid, Clinton, Hussein Obama . . . political gangsters! God no longer blesses America. He's one smart fella, that God!
