The Times' Joe Curl reports today that the NRA is taking a different tack on endorsements:
The National Rifle Association, which did not endorse President Bush in 2000 and 2004 until just a month before the general election, is considering stepping into the presidential campaign fray early next year during the primary season, the group's chief lobbyist says.
While the NRA waited until October in each of the past two presidential election years before endorsing a candidate, the group plans to take a more high-profile role early in the 2008 Republican nomination process.
"Historically, we have not gotten involved in primaries. We traditionally wait until after the conventions," said Chris Cox, head lobbyist for the NRA. "That being said, given the candidates and the process and the front-loading of the primaries, it is a possibility that we could get involved in one of these presidential primaries."
Everybody, it seems, is afraid of getting leap-frogged on the calendar. With all the early endorsements, primaries and debates, I'm wondering if the saturation coverage now will mean burnout next fall.
Thoughts?

It is past time for all those who love America, and freedom to begin early in the election process. It is my firm conviction that America cannot survive another eight years of Carter Clinton administration, or lack therof. How can anyone not see the that the end will come quickly uless American voters use more intelligence than demonstrated in the last election.

Frankly I am not sure this country can survive another eight years under the administration of either political party (I am Libertarian in my beliefs and a registered Independent). This country is in very sad shape after eight years. Granted I was not a fan of Bill Clinton for various reasons but he did leave us in better shape financially than when he took over. Sadly GWB, who I voted for once, has systematically destroyed the fiber of this country and I am truly sad to think what we have lost since 2000.

Agreed Pres. Clinton left the country in better financial shape, but he strong-armed through a gun ban that predictably had no effect in reducing crime, and only turned more people into criminals with the stroke of a pen.
Although Bush hasn't gone after our tools of self-defense, his ignorant anti-science stance, self-righteousness, and inflexibility will have dire economic and political consequences.
I say good luck to the NRA--hope you find someone who isn't trying to turn more Americans into criminals for partisan purposes. What about people like myself, who are pro-second amendment, pro-choice on abortion, understand the theory of evolution, against faith-based funding and school vouchers because they can be obtained by governments posing as religions, and also believe we should decriminalize drugs and watch the bottom drop out of terrorists' funding? How can the NRA pick a candidate if one citizen can't?

Neither political party has the best interests of the people at this point in time and neither is singularly fit to govern. There's no telling what the next administration may be as of yet, but given the problems they will face, the magnitude of those problems and the political unwillingness to face and deal with those problems directly bode very poorly for the country and the common citizen.

There has to be a Plan B! Otherwise we are stuck again with trying to to pick between two unacceptable choices.
My Plan B is to tell the party, which has at least a possibility of nominating an acceptable candidate, that if they don't at their convention, I pledge to vote for the Constitution Party candidates.
If there is a third party, and if the disgusted of both major paties (and simlar-feeling independents) commit to vote for it, we only need 1/3 the votes to carry this election.
And the duopoly parties will know this before they nominate!

The NRA is the protector of the Second Amendment and the Second Amendment is all we have to protect ourselves from the government and those that would destroy us. I'll go with their pick for President. The congress is the real enemy and since there will never be term limits we should limit terms by never voting for any incumbent again...none of them.

As an NRA Life Member, I'm very disappointed with the way the NRA management boys have handled some recent issues.... At the 2006 NRA convention, they trot out Tommy Franks who uses the podium to champion the Iraq War... saying absolutely nothing about the Second Amendment. What the hell is the NRA doing with a guy like Franks giving aspeech like that? (I thought that's what the NRA was all about). I also found it extremely irritating to learn that the NRA turned it's back on Congressman Ron Paul and supported his Democrat opponent in the 2006 elections.

To Dutch: The National Rifle Association did not support the Democratic opponent of Congressman Ron Paul in the 2006 election. In fact, they made no endorsement in that race. Paul did, however, earn a "B" rating from the NRA because he voted twice with anti-gun congressman Mike Castle and Chris Shays against the top NRA priority legislation -- the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act to prevent gun manufacturers from being held responsible for the criminal misuse of their lawful products by others -- once in 2003 and again in 2005. This bill was signed into law on October 26, 2005 with only four House Republicans voting against it that year and only three two years earlier. The truth is that Ron Paul turned his back on gun owners by voting to perpetuate gun industry lawsuits -- that is and should be extremely irritating to all of us interested in protecting the Second Amendment.

Perhaps you should study the text and get a better understanding of what we are about. As a Life Member you should be better informed.

Senator Fred Thompson is the only candidate that gets it. He makes decisions based on principles. Principles don't change. You have to stand for something and not change who you are based on the polls. That is what Mitt Romney and Rudy Giuliani have done and all of the Democrats do it. Give me a leader that will stand by his principles anyday versus someone that stands for everything.
I know many Republicans and conservatives that will stay home if Rudy Giuliani is the candidate. He does not represent our values as conservatives, and never will. Millionaire Mitt Romney is a Republican-in-name-only (RINO) that simply has everything else and nothing to do. "I guess I'll just try to buy the presidency." The White House isn't for sale! Mike Huckabee is all for amnesty for illegals and open borders! NO THANKS!! Conservatives will simply stay home and the Democrats will pick up additional seats in the House and probably get the 60 seats in the Senate they need to completely destroy our Country. Nice picture huh?
However, I think Fred can bring America back together, if that's even possible. America needs a rebirth of patriotism and honor. Republicans also need a rebirth. President Reagan was our last rebirth and he can never be duplicated. Fred Thompson will bring his own down-to-earth common sense to this country. If a conservative runs as a conservative, he will win! Fred is 100% pro-2nd Amendment and for the right to keep and bear arms!
Think of it this way: Eight years of another Clinton White House? Now if that is not a sufficient enough reason to pull together as a nation, and fight this socialist liberal takeover of our government, what is?
Folks, we are in for the fight of our lives, just as our young men and women are fighting for our freedoms in Iraq and Afghanistan, we must fight for our nation right here and now! I truly believe Fred Thompson is the one man who can pull this nation back together! Rudy Giuliani will just tear us apart.
