Snow resigning

White House press secretary Tony Snow will announce today he is resigning, the White House has confirmed to the Washington Times.

President Bush will make a statement at the top of the 12:45 p.m., regularly scheduled news briefing, after which Mr. Snow is expected to speak.

Mr. Snow's last day will be Sept. 14, according to the Associated Press. Deputy press secretary Dana Perino is expected to replace him.

Mr. Snow, who was named White House press secretary little more than a year ago, is undergoing his second bout with cancer.

After beating colon cancer in 2005, Mr. Snow announced he had been diagnosed again in late March, this time with cancer that had attached itself to his liver.

Mr. Snow underwent surgery, began chemotherapy, and returned to work in late April.

I empathize with Tony Snow and his battle with cancer. Members of my family have died of colon cancer. My only comment is that he is a very lucky man to be able to afford to quit a job and do something that makes more money. Whatever health insurance plan he has must be a good one to follow him around. Most working Americans would never be able to get a job with a higher income with the diagnosis of spreading cancer and still have health insurance. They would be forced to remain in their present job or be totally uninsurable.

I wish Mr. Snow and his family all the best. He is a wonderful newsman and press spokesperson. I enjoyed him on FoxNews. When my daughter was a toddler who only wanted to watch Barney, my husband told her that it was time to watch "Tony the Snowman." She finally figured out that didn't mean a cartoon or a guy in fuzzy purple suit.

My mom had colon surgery in April 2005. Her cancer was already at late stage 3 or early stage 4. Praise God that she is still cancer free after surgery and chemo. Mr. Snow was a real source of optimism to me.
