Bob Novak stopped by the Heritage Foundation today for a lunchtime discussion with conservative bloggers about his new professional autobiography, The Prince of Darkness.
While he lamented the practice of reporters acting as opinion drivers and news analysts, Novak wasn't shy about offering a few opinions of his own.
When asked to rate the current field of Republican presidential candidates, Novak didn't have any kind words for the current top-tier field of Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, Mitt Romney and John McCain. But when pressed as to who he thinks will be the eventual nominee, Novak said he expects Thompson to get the nod.
However, Novak offered his own personal endorsement of Texas congressman Ron Paul. "He's a very engaging person... I'd like to see him as president," Novak said. "Can you imagine him at the United Nations?"
Novak had harsh words for other Republican lawmakers and causes as well. He said he didn't believe the hotly contested immigration bill equated to amnesty, but acknowledged the politics of the debate were "poison." And he described the fight over congressional earmarks as a "show," lacking substance because he believes most members of Congress will say they oppose federal spending but will turn around and vote for spending bills anyway.
When asked what he thinks of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Novak joked, "I think he's the worst leader of the Senate since Bill Frist."

There are an abundance of pundits now saying that they really like Ron Paul but that he won't be elected. If public opinion (and fact) is molded by these pundits then why do they not engage in positive spin toward Paul? I am a liberal who supports Ron Paul and have been disheartened by how the MSM is believing its own hype. The New York Times consistently talks of McCain as a frontrunner when the grassroots obviously adore Paul. Reality is what we make it so please Bob Novak help make Dr Paul our reality with your essays and opinion pieces. America is in dire straits right now and we need a breakthrough. I have put aside partisanship & wish more people could do the same.
Thank you,

It sure is nice to see somebody (anybody, at this point) talking about Ron Paul. One must wonder why Ron Paul is left out of practically every discussion big media has regarding this election.
He's topped McCain in cash on hand campaign funding (and he's a mere $800,000 behind Romney), he's easily the most popular candidate on the web, and his grassroots support is incredibly impressive. He should also be standing out as the only GOP candidate who is against the war in Iraq.
Instead we get updates on Fred Thompson and Newt Gingrich...two men who aren't even in the race. No wonder the Republican party is in such a sad state of affairs. The only candidate they have who Americans like is being excluded.

Bob is a smart guy. I mean, not one of the 182 people who voted for Ron in the NH straw poll had to have their tickets bought for them.
Why couldn't Rudy get more than $20 people out to vote for him?
Paul took this nicely with 65%.

I've been closely following the Ron Paul campaign since just after the first Republican debate. Over that period of time, I've noticed a significant shift in the tone of the coverage and its reception. Journalists and thought leaders are beginning muster the courage to say favorable things despite their fear of being the only one to endorse Ron Paul.

Boy, why do i like Robert Novak? He seems to be a part of the establishment, but nevertheless, he is a small government kind a guy...perhaps 1 or 2 of them in DC I think.

I think more need to step up to the plate to
endorse Ron Paul.
Good for Bob Novak.
Ron Paul blows Fred away as far as his
understatnding of the issues of today.
His perspective on the history of
political confusion, and the lack
of integrity in the process, are key to
straightening out this country.
Get behind Ron Paul and don't stop until
he has won the nomination.
This is what we need to take Paul over the top.

I enjoyed reading the short article... Yes, I agree it would be nice to see Ron Paul address the UN!
We enforce UN resolutions with our own blood and for what? So we can protect the oil supply? Yet, we have enough oil here in the states.
Thanks Mr. Novak for the postive view of Paul....
It appears many GOP members on the hill are starting to follow Pauls direction with issues with the war and for this I'm greatful to see as well.
I look foreward when I can say President Paul instead of Congressman Paul

Flubber Thompson no longer has the cachet he had a few weeks ago and Mr. Novak is wrong about him getting the nod. Thompson's former supporters are backing away and Mr. Thompson has fallen far short of his fund-raising goals.
Mr. Thompson's past is checkered (his support of Aristide is unexplained); his lobbying efforts have left his hands dirty and he has a history of inconsistency with respect to the issues. When Michael Moore (whom I do not much like) asked Thompson some pointed questions about health care, Thompson not only side-stepped the questions and used his mammoth ego to personally attack Mr. Moore.
Once Flubber Thompson is shown to be the egocentric gas-bag that he is, his chances will tank. This would be a good thing.
Frankly, I have little use for the Republicans. I was, until recently, a true democrat and supported Barack Obama. That was until I saw a YouTube video titled, "Ron Paul: Stop Dreaming." That changed me, almost immediately, to being a Ron Paul advocate. He said things I liked and appreciated; things nobody else (including Obama) ever said.
So it would be very helpful if Mr. Novak actually put his money where his mouth appears to be, and support Dr. Paul.

This is my first post on the topic of Ron Paul on any website. First, I want to say that I support Ron Paul. Second, there are many people, like myself, who do not contribute to the stories online regarding the Ron Paul movement. My point is this, there is quite a movement from those who are more vocal than myself who are online advocating for Ron Paul. Just imagine those who do not contribute to the stories that share that same ambition to get Ron Paul elected. It's not just a group of tin-foil hat wearing 'RP' spammers creating this awareness. Its also those like myself, hidden in the shadows, like many others who are already fed up with the current administration, direction, lies, and realize without RP, its just going to be more of the same. - NY

Ron Paul is the only sane choice for conservatives.
Everyother option from CFR Fred to Mitt Flip Flop consists of someone who can be construde as left of Obama and Hillary given the issue. They are either Demo-Publicans or Repubuli-Crats, but not really conservative. Even Fraud Thompson voted against gun owners 14 time as a senator. Who do these people think they are. They are not conservative that is for darn sure.

Wow. How had I never heard of Mr. Paul before? After reading what Novak said, I started to research him last night. Seven hours later at 2 in the morning, I could barely get off the computer to go to bed. Ron Paul has all of the attributes I could ever dream a President should have. He really gives me hope in the future of our country. Now all it's going to take is for everyone else to take notice, which I think is unavoidable at this point.

Ron Paul has a good chance of winning.
Ron Paul is 1st on YouTube, Meetup, MySpace, Technorati, Alexa, Google, etc. The old media is just too slow to realize what is happening.
Ron Paul places 1st or 2nd in every straw poll, debate, and active participation survey.
Dr. Ron Paul has the most contributions from U.S. military personnel and veterans above all other candidates. So support the troops and vote Ron Paul!
Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton were doing about the same in the 'Scientific Polls' at this stage in their elections. 'Scientific Polls' at this stage only measure name recognition. Over the next six months Ron Paul will gain name recognition. Most people who learn about Ron Paul become major supporters.
70% of Americans want us out of Iraq and want change.
Ron Paul is only republican candidate against the war.
Ron Paul only needs about 30% vote from republicans sick of the war and abuse of powers to win in republican primaries.
Dr. Ron Paul is the man of integrity and courage that America needs at this time.

The Ron Paul revolution is for real. Just follow the activities of the Ron Paul Meet Up groups and see the grassroots effort of a 27,000 volunteers. Watch the videos on You Tube for further evidence. In the end, this kind of political activity will blow away the naysayers. The Ron Paul campaign is the political story of the decade. The funny thing is, every time a pundit downplays the campaign, it just fires up Paul's supporters to do more.
The Council for Foreign Relations has candidates running in both parties (all the "main" candidates), so they will continue their one world government agenda no matter what, unless Ron Paul spoils the party.
I saw a video last night of Dick Cheney boasting at a CFR meeting that he kept his CFR connection secret while campaigning in Wyoming. There are no secrets on the Internet, Dick. You guys are toast.
The BBC website tells of Condi promising gulf states $60 billion in aid. TWO THINGS (1) If anyone is listening and close to Ron Paul, please show Ron the following: Ron, Please ask your audience to imagine what America would look like AFTER the Income Tax is abolished. Ask, "would not thousands of American companies return to America to produce and manufacture here again? Would not American Jobs increase? If you are a Union man, does the prospect of having hundreds of companies returning to the United States give you more job security and higher wages? Sure it does. So lets open the door to America, and invite our companies back home to produce and manufacture here. Lets make "made in America" mean something again. Lets do it by abolishing taxes on everyone here at home." Lets make America a place where business Want to Be, and Americans want to work.
(2) Ron please always always always couple the phrase "less government and more charity" together. Never say one without the other. Both you and I both know more charity will occur in a society with less government, but we MUST couple these two phrases ALWAYS for a general audience. For instance..., "If we brought our military back to American military bases, doubled the pay of our military, and doubled the funding at VA hospitals, we would still save half of our military budget: What I will do with those saved billions? I would use them as transition monies to smooth things over to a society now living with 'less government and more charity'.

When I first tell someone about the Paul campaign, the most common reaction is "ugh, a Republican??"... I suspect that the Elites were prepared to nominate any of these Bushite losers and simply pass the baton to Clinton as the "anti-war candidate", mabey even taking the Iraq Authorization's co-author as running mate. (!)
It sounds like some of the regular (not-Elite) people within the Repub Party are starting to realize that the only way to win this thing is to nominate the guy that's been right since the beginning.

Remember a few years ago what the mainstream media had to say about the chances of a southern state governor, a peanut farmer, to become president?
Dr Paul has served from a district in Texas that keeps re-electing him. For how long? Twenty years? He certainly has experience that outweighs many others running for president. Plus he remembers what made America the beacon of hope for the world. The Constitution, a document that has been "repurposed" into toilet paper by recent administrations and congresses.
It will take guts to elect someone who remembers and believes in what made us great. Does America have the will to do so?

Ron Paul and his supporters are real alright. His message is American spirit personified. His record speaks for itself and is his commitment to the Constitution is untouchable by any other politician.
Ron Paul has inspired almost everyone who has heard him speak. I've seen people really take interest and participating for the first time in their life. I have several friends both conservative and liberal and most like him.

This is my first post for Ron Paul too. I was amazed to hear self-identified liberals saying 'yes' to Ron Paul for President. I'm very conservative, and I say 'yes' to Ron Paul. But please don't try to saddle him with a running mate that doesn't share his same love and adherence to our constitution. And, don't forget to make sure you are registered to vote, and vote in every election for the candidate that's position and record are closest to Mr. Paul's. Once he's President, he doesn't need to be hamstrung by a stagnant, old-school Congress. Let's keep plugging, and force MSM to get Ron Paul in front of the people. In my opinion, this is America's last chance to get it right. When Mr. Paul is elected there will be lots of really radical changes. Some may hurt (I have relatives working for the IRS that would lose their jobs if the IRS folded), but they'll all be good for this country, and therefore, good for us and our children.
