Lott defends Sen. Stevens after IRS/FBI raid

Senate Minority Whip Trent Lott came to the defense of Republican Sen. Ted Stevens, whose Alaska home was raided Monday by FBI and Internal Revenue Service agents in a corruption investigation.

"We all know Ted Stevens as a good man, a tireless advocate for improving the quality of life in Alaska — a decorated veteran and a true patriot of our country," said Mr. Lott, Mississippi Republican. "He's asked us to await all information during this investigation, and I will, while I'm standing by our longest-serving colleague."

Being supported by Lott is in my opinion the kiss of death.

Lott is the personification of what is wrong with the "Been around so long." group of old blowhards that reside on both sides of the aisle and who should be booted off the welfare roll that Congress has become....

It takes a crook to know another crook. How can he defend Stevens, one of the biggest porkbarrelers we know. We need some YOUNG decent, moral legislatures to steer our country in the right direction, not those greedy guts we now have except for a few.
It should be "What can I do for my country", not "What can my country do for me".

Stevens was tipped off. In his statement he says: "My attorneys were advised this morning that federal agents wished to search my home in Girdwood"

The FBI warned him of an impending raid, rendering it useless. No wonder he's not worried.

I truly don't understand why anyone, Republican or Democrat, would rush to comment on Senator Stevens. The fact is, the public knows that Capitol Hill is full of corruption, and what Senator Lott and all members of the House and Senate need to be doing is simply addressing this rampant corruption and seeing that there are strict guidelines to prevent it in the future.

The House of Representatives finally did that today, after much inexcusable delay, in an almost unanimous vote. The Senate, regardless of party affiliation, should simply shut up and hurriedly follow suit.
