No confidence in the no-confidence vote?

The Senate's no-confidence vote in Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales failed to garner the 60 votes needed to cut off debate and move forward to a vote on the actual resolution.

53 senators voted for cloture, with 38 senators voting against cloture, and one Republican, Sen. Ted Stevens of Alaska, voting present.

Seven Republican senators voted with Democrats for cloture.
