That horrible Washington weather.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took to the Senate floor this morning to explain why the scheduled 10 a.m. vote on a homeland security measure would have to take place at 1 p.m. instead.
Noting it might seem strange for those outside the Beltway that a little white powder falling from the sky could cripple Senate operations, the Nevada Democrat said Washington is "different from a lot of other places."
He added that some might scratch their head at "an inch or two" of snow creating "all the pause, but it does." He said many senators and their staffers live in Virginia, and added that one mystery senator is "stuck on a train because of the bad weather." (Reid's office promised a call back to identify the commuting lawmaker.)
"Make a long story really short, we have essential staff that's not here right now," Reid said, wearing his signature frown. "Those are the facts of life in the bitter winter of an inch of snow in Washington."

This is completely ridiculous. One inch of snow. They should throw the whole lot of them out.

It's a good thing George Washington didn't feel the same way about a little snow ....

I'll bet that these poor overworked Senator's would be able to make it to work if they were voting themselves a pay raise ...

The mystery senatorial commuter is probably Joe Biden of Delware.

That's how Socialists and Communists work. I'll bet they made breakfast somewhere!

They need to do their Global Warming rain dance to make the snow go away.

Hey - my husband and I drove in from Northern VA at 7 AM and it was about the same commute as always - taking about an hour. There was a little snow falling and it was over soon thereafter. There were Metro problems unrelated to the flurries. So, no reason to delay things in my opinion.

WOW a whole inch shuts down senate. Quick someone call FEMA and get some help there quick. There has to be something done now to help these poor stranded fools.

Harry Reid needs to be removed NOW the cloud of his phony land deal with the mob should be investigated and prosecuted!

A delay for one inch of snow? Someone in the Capital should have "leaked" the following info to all Senate members:
At 10 AM, this morning only, all television media outlets will offer free airtime to any member of the Senate who wishes it. Cameras will be available for one hour only, on a first come first served basis.

Maybe Mother Nature's trying to tell them something. Like this whole "Global Warming" thing is one big crock.
Posted by Heather | March 7, 2007 11:35 AM
I live in Northern VA about 25 miles from Washington and there is NO SNOW on the ground so I don't know what the big deal is.
Posted by Jen | March 7, 2007 11:37 AM
quite likely the snow is a right-wing conspiracy, we know it has to Bush' fault,
Posted by fred | March 7, 2007 11:51 AM
It amazes me that a Senator would not have the intelligence to plan ahead. If you know it's going to snow and you take a train, leave early. This is something we instill in our children. My question is what else is this senator not prepared for today?

I know how they feel. I missed work last summer because after I was beat over the head by the 'Weather Channel' the UV index scared me. DC is 'different than a lot of places'. Like REALITY. We get what we pay for, and there are no leaders in this crop. Bet they got paid? By us? Try that at YOUR job, if you still have one.
Posted by John | March 7, 2007 11:54 AM
What a mess that must be.
Do they get paid for a "SNOW DAY"

I preface this by saying bin Laden is an evil [deleted] with with warts and all, however, bombs falling from the sky and living in a freaking cave doesn't prevent bin Laden from carrying on his business, but an EXTREMELY light dusting of snow disrupts the legislature of the world's largest/only superpower.

How embarrassing! Wimps and the world knows it.

Harry - 2nd time in a month that snow has delayed your Global Warming show. Reschedule for July 4th and see what happens. (its okay, Harry is going to move Independence Day to May Day) Off to sell some carbon credits.

My commute was an hour longer than normal, from Alexandria. There was no snow at all on the ground, but this entire city freaks out at the idea of snow. Schools closed for crying out loud! It takes at least a foot for schools to close in Ohio, where I'm from.

You have got to be kidding me. What a joke.

I'm not certain why any of you are so militant and acidic about this story. The Senate is likely no different than most other American places of employment: Employees will use ANY excuse to be late or call in for a day of work.
Where I work (in the Midwest), just about everyone will refuse to come to work if there are flurries or heavy rain.

I'm an education major with student teaching experience which required me to travel out of town to get to the school. Although we had 2 hour delays, it was because we have SEVERAL inches of snow and ice. Not ONE measly inch. Seriously I'm glad that my part-time paycheck helps pay these peoples salary every year. What a crock. And he makes it sound like an inch is seriously hazardous!! I wish I could convince myself of things the way this guy and others does, that way I can justify things like not going to work.

Ha Ha!!! Does anyone actually THINK the Senate can really DO something? The best thing that can happen to the country is for them to stay home all the time! This political class has become not just a waste of time, but useless to the nation. And, frankly, their "staffs" are of even less value. Send them all packing and get some people in who are interested in our nation; not their next election or which special interest group is buying dinner tonight and paying for their flight home!
Posted by Rich | March 7, 2007 1:04 PM
Our leaders? What a crock.
Posted by robin | March 7, 2007 1:20 PM
Let them stay home permanently! Give them their salary for the rest of the year and lock the building up. We'll soon find we can live just fine without them. We have MORE than enough laws to live by. Our founding fathers NEVER meant government to be what its become.

We had over a foot of snow with drifts here in Maine last week and everyone managed to get to work on time and all the local governments were at work. This week it has been sub-zero and business and commerce goes on. I am in agreement that Washington needs another wake -up in 2008,as it had last year, only more so. Throw the BUMS out!
Posted by george | March 7, 2007 2:05 PM
Harry probably had a land deal that needed tweaking - and of course his business is more important than the Senate's. Perhaps he had a meeting with one of his four lobbyist sons?
Posted by Richard | March 7, 2007 2:06 PM
Frankly, any time the Senate has to cancel a session is a good day for America. They can't pass any cockamanie legislation if they're not in session.
Posted by joated | March 7, 2007 2:18 PM
May the snow gods keep it up and keep us safe.
Posted by leo | March 7, 2007 2:41 PM
actually, I hope it snows in DC for the next year. that will save us from these lame brain idiots from doing any Congressional business. Imagine how much money they won't be spending, on useless projects. In fact lets pay these guys time-and -one-half for staying home.
Posted by fred | March 7, 2007 4:42 PM
Our Leaders? That was never the intention of congress. They were meant to be public servants doing the will of the people. They need to be reminded.

My kid's school was closed today. And I'm sure no one involved in one of the 63 automobile accidents on a three mile stretch of I-95 in Delaware thought an inch of snow was a big deal either, before they left home.

Unless you live here you have no idea how absurd traffic becomes during snow storms. We had a woman from South Carolina who worked for us that abandoned her car when she slid in the snow. Just left the thing in the road and called a cab on her cell phone. I live five miles from my office and it will take 45 minutes to an hour to get home tonight.

Indeed, any day the Congress is out of session, is a good day.
Almost all members of Congress, (both Demo's & RINO's) particularly in the Senate, are somewhere between power hungry career criminals and misguided do-gooders out to spend the American Citizen's money for their supposed benefit.

Did anyone catch the irony here? Mother nature and her evil Global warming must be trying to stop their efforts! LOL
