Call it a tryout

Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney will campaign solo in Pennsylvania tomorrow for Sen. John McCain, and the question everyone has to be wondering is whether this is a tryout for the vice presidential nomination.

Romney lost to McCain in the race for the Republican nomination, but has since made it clear he'd love to still be on the ticket with McCain.

The two men have already campaigned together in Utah, but tomorrow night's dinner, with the Lancaster County Republican Committee, gives Romney a chance to show how he can do flying solo on behalf of McCain. That, of course, is exactly the role of a vice presidential nominee, and for that matter of a vice president.

Romney moved from being the harshest critic of McCain to being one of his chief cheerleaders. But as my colleague, Ralph Z. Hallow, reported last week, social conservatives are warning McCain he should look elsewhere for his Number Two.

It will be interesting to see who else gets a similar invitation to be an official McCain surrogate — for example, Mike Huckabee, the darling of religious conservative voters, who McCain will need to tap into.

WHICH SOCIAL conservatives?
The ones listed in the anti-Romney ad have their issues. The ones at evangelicalsformitt.com debunked the ad list groups complaints as utterly false and misleading--not to mention way out of date and already debunked months ago anyway. I wonder how come those false claims keep on resurfacing only to get re-debunked!

Sounds and looks like a "recycling principle" by the very de-bunkable anti-Mormon tall tail crowd--and it sells to a real audience! The Anti-LDS writers make a real good living with their literature to people who know what they want to hear.

McCain Stripped of many Delegates

McCain has broken his own law and he will no longer have enough delegates to be the Republican nominee.
http://www.presstv.com/Detail.aspx?id=48815§ionid=3510203

Chairman of the commission David Mason warned that his withdrawal request had not yet been granted.

McCain has 2 problems with this issue.

1: If the FEC allows Mccain to withdraw from FED matching funds he will be revoked from many delegates in states that he was able to be on the ballot without the required number of signatures therefore he will lose any delegates for him in those states.

2: If the FEC doesnt release him from matching funds he will be capped at 50 million dollars and will kill his run for president because he will not have the money to compete.

The problem is even more complicated than this. McCain used the matching funds eligibility to avoid having to collect signatures to qualify for ballot access in several states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

Those state wins must be voided according to most experts on the issue. That means he does not have the necessary delegates.

Ironic that it was his law (McCain-Feingold) that got him in this mess.

McCain broke the law...

The delegates in these states need to file the motion at their conventions for McCain to be revoked of all his delegates in those states for failure to comply with election ballot state law requirements.

Perhaps John McCain should consult with the ranking member of the House Finance Services Committee? If there is one person specifically expert enough to iron out John McCain's financial blunders and to provide insight as to how to repair our nations economic problems it is the ranking member of the House Finance Services Committee (click link below for the ranking member of the HFS):

Go McCain-Romney! www.unitethegop.com

I will never be convinced that this latest play by Huckabee and friends is anything more than anti mormon bigotry! Huckabee has been playing the "Christian" card throughout the whole campaign. If these people were honest and cared about the country they would admit that Romney governed MA like a conservative while Mr. Huckabee did not do the same in Arkansas. The Huckabee supporters continue to smear Romney to build up the terribly flawed Mike Huckabee. Harvard business grad or Bible College grad - who has a better chance at bringing back our economy? I don't like McCain but will vote for him as long as Huckabee isn't anywhere near that ticket. I prefer Romney but the idea of Obama is downright terrifying and Clinton seems more like a goof everytime she opens her mouth. McCain/Romney would be a comforting ticket.

Pau Wyrich has already backed away from the anti-Romney screed. He pretty much said he was mis led on what the form was to be. He thought it was a private communication, and now a full page ad, using his big name.

Bucks folks got caught in the cookie jar, and Mr. Wyrich is pulling his hand away from the fire.

By the way. What's Hucks 'big announcement' on the 15th? Hopefully it's not the veep nom. I'd start working for Obama that afternoon.

Romney was never the front runner. Beat fair and square by Huckabee in Iowa and by McCain in New Hampshire. Next, he has a deep character problem, turning 180 degrees against personally held convictions that didn't mean a thing to him, but betraying family values in Massachusetts. Then the shady dealings of Bain Capital, stripping assets and laying off families - all for tax free accounts in the Cayman Islands. Then he's Pro-Torture, with Blackwater mercenary leaders supporting him. and mormonism holds beliefs - an agenda - about America - that it will take over America in 'the latter days.' In the South, Romney's obvious insincerity is known as only one thing - carpetbagging. He's a slick suit - a snake-oil salesman...
If McCain was smart, he'd stay far away from Varmitt Romney - the Dems will make mincemeat out of Bain Capital.
Who'd be good? Not Condi Rice. There's another bad past - she failed over Iraq and caved into the Neocons.
Chuck Hagel, Powell, Huckabee, Crist, Kemp, Dole, Hutchison, Cox, Portman, Thompson - now we're talkin...

Oh, Dr. Armstrong, how wrong thou art--too much learning has made thee foolish.

Iowa: The press panicked and elevated Hucabee with the equivalent of millions in free advertising. Huckabee didn't need to violate campaign ethics rules (like he did five (5) times in Ark.)when the press makes you their darling for 15 mintes.

Bain Capital--shady? All above board, venture capitalist saved thousands of jobs by saving bankrupted and closing business. Your effort to rewrite history on Bain is flat weak. Bain never broke the law despite scrutiny by multiple politcal opponents over the years. No skeletons, nice try.

180 Degree Turns? You bought the mainstream media template. Get a mind of your own and look at the facts. Other than passing on Roe v. Wade, Romney's 1984 campaign flyer was for conservative government.

Insincerity? Lets look at who has produced a strong family. Romney transmitted his deeply held beliefs to children who honor him and the law. His reverence for his father, who was also a rock solid man is a testament to the fabric he is made of. If you can't see that, you don't deserve his governance.

Dr. Armstrong - thank you for revealing yourself.

This latest dirty deed by Huckabee and his supporters is just more of the same veiled bigotry they've thrown out in the past. Most of the signers have written and made anti-Mormon comments in the past.

2 questions: When will they remove Weyrich's name from the ad, and where do they go to get their credibility back after this back-fired on them so miserably?

Romney is by far the most desirable running mate for McCain. Let's hope that all these signs pointing to it are indeed the reality.

Dr. Armstrong???? Dr. of What???- divinity??? anti Mormon????
How shameful that in this day and time in this, the greatest country in the world, we still have to be exposed to bigots such as you.

Mitt Romney has every qualification necessary to be President but if the powers that be feel John McCain is "owed" because of his service and sacrifice for his country - then so be it - we can deal with VP for 4 years and the President in 2012.

Mike Huckabee is the greatest divider of all - and flip flops on EVERY issue to suit the audience. We need a "serious" leader not a one liner comedian.

Please send the message loudly and clearly to the RNC and McCain Campaign - NO MITT

Yet another blog where the Romney suck-ups rush to accuse anyone who dares criticize his public policy record -- as the ad truthfully did -- of being religious bigots.

Perhaps they can't read. The ad did in fact directly mention Romney's faith -- IN A POSITIVE SENSE.

The ad specifically criticized him for a public policy record which "contradicts the values widely associated with his own faith" on abortion and the homosexual agenda. In other words, the ad signers make clear they share and are defending the values (if not the theology) widely associated with Romney's church.

The overhwelming majority of LDS folks are solidly pro-life, solidly pro-family, and make great conservative Republican officeholders.

Not Romney. Supported abortion on demand. Endorsed gays in the military. Opposed the Mass Marriage Protection Amendment when running for governor. Then flip-flopped on all the above to run for prez.

But even after his alleged "conversion" to being a conservative, he still endorses state "gay rights" laws and still opposes the Boy Scout policy banning homosexuals. And as the ad said, he supported a mandatory govt health plan with $50 co-pays for abortion on demand, and it was Romney who issued the executive order giving justices of the peace an ultimatum: either perform homosexual weddings or resign.

There are two reasons I believe he'll never be president:

1. Many conservatives don't trust him.

2. His supporters (as on this thread) always either immediately or inevitably accuse anyone who criticizes his liberal record on social issues of being religous bigots.

When McCain is criticized for some vote he made, does he pull out the violins and whine that the critic must be anti-Episcopalian turned Baptist?

When Hillary is attacked, even she doesn't whine that her critics must be anti-Methodist.

Nope. It's only the kneejerk play the victim Romney crowd. And as long as Romney backers make every single discussion about every single issue a fight about religion, over and over again drawing attention to Romney's religion, he won't rise above being unable to win a primary in any state other than his three "native" states -- Utah, Michigan, and Mass -- and the small caucus states out west where he can buy the organization to win among a very small number of voters. The three states where he spent the most time and money, where folks got to know him best up close and personal -- Iowa, NH, and SC -- he lost to candidtes he'd outspent 20-to-1.

But you Romney folks keep making sure that your candidate and his record can never be discussed without drawing attention to his church, and you'll get the same result in 2012 that you did this year.

Richard, Surely you have recognized that there are civilized people on these blogs and you may find it helpful to learn from them. You comments regarding that with which you disagree, come across as personal and hate filled. That does not promote intelligent discussion of the issues. .....just in case you didn't notice.

Richard, my dear, you have been misinformed. You have mischaracterized Romney's policy positions. To say he ever supported abortion on demand is a distortion. Support for don't ask don't tell in the military when it seems to be working is not the same as endorsing gays in the military--another distortion. Opposed a constitutional amendment protecting marriage--that is no distortion, that is a lie.

Romney had nothing to do with the $50 copay for abortion. That was not part of the healthcare plan that he signed, nor was it part of the legislation. Look and you won't find it. Rather it was the privelege of an insurance board after the fact to mandate that as part of the program. It was not his wishes to add that nor all the other provisions that have since driven the hard-obtained low premiums higher. Nevertheless, you accuse his public policy record of this, but if you look at the public record, the years in office as governor of Massachusetts, you will see he came down on the side of life each time a bill crossed his desk.

You also distort the facts regarding the Massachusetts Supreme Court mandating gay marriage. Romney did all he could within the law to overturn that. He fought for legislation but the legislature had not the courage to do their duty. Romney was one of a few who first recognized that the only real protection for traditional marriage lies with amending the constitution. He testified before congress to that regard. Your accusations are not believable. Traditional marriage finds no greater supporter than Mitt Romney who was the only one encouraging more marriages, marriage before children, and firmly with social conservatives who favored amending the constitution.

Because you lack credibility on the core issues of your complaint with Romney, one is left wondering what is really bugging you? And why even bring up his religion in this petition to McCain? Why can't we separate discussion of religion from politics entirely? One should have nothing to do with the other. That is the wish of our founding fathers and has proved wisdom for the ages. Your guys keep bringing it up and reminding us of his church. Whether favorably or bigoted, comments about his church only serve to remind others what his faith is. Why? I think the answer is obviously an attempt to stigmatize him by appealing to those who do not value relgious freedom and want others to believe only as they do--in other words, bigots.

The truth is that as Ralph Hallow reported and no other did, the petitioners are not defined by their social conservatism, rather they were combined to promote Mike Huckabee. The members of the group have in the past made anti-Mormon statements. Their motives seem suspect. It is not social conservatism that motivates them to oppose Romney or else they would be opposing Giuliani who is pro-choice and supports gay civil unions, or Condoleeza Rice, and others who are pro-choice. So why put all their effort into opposing Romney? There is not a dime's worth of difference between Romney and Huckabee on social issues.

Sorry, no one believes you. These accusations are hollow and false and frankly, laughable. Romney would make a much better president than Huckabee, has a much better record of success, has an exemplary family, and the smartest candidate that I have ever seen.

So what's really bugging you?
