Ron Paul's stashed cash

Ron Paul has been stockpiling his campaign cash, and his campaign says he's now in such a good financial situation that he should be considered one of the top contenders for the Republican presidential nomination.

Looking at the new campaign finance numbers filed this week, and dating to Sept. 30, Mr. Paul has $5.4 million available to spend on the primaries.

That puts him behind only Rudy Giuliani, who has $11.4 million after debts are included, Fred Thompson, who has $6.4 million, and Mitt Romney, who has $9.2 million, after having loaned his campaign more than $17 million of his own money.

"Beyond those four candidates, there really appears to be no one else in the field who has the financial resources to make a reasonable run at the Republican nomination," said Jonathan Bydlak, Mr. Paul's fundraising director.

The campaign held a press conference today to drive home their point that they deserve higher-tier status, taking particular aim at Sen. John McCain, whose campaign they called "effectively bankrupt," with just $1.67 million in cash available for the primary but $1.73 million listed in debt.

We Ron Paul supporters have been relentless in fighting media bias, so I figure it's time to give credit where credit is due.

I thank you wholeheartedly for sticking to the facts.

Why is Ron Paul so arrogant? He is showing up his opponents by being purposely frugal instead of dissipating his funds in a frivolous way like John McCain and the rest.

Romney has to pay himself back, which means he has to raise 17 million dollars and give to himself.

Guiliani's advisors are extremeists and he will never win nomination by the people.

Thanks for the article! One might even argue that Ron Paul could have the *most* cash, considering that his dollars go several times as far as the others because of the no-waste, frugal way that his campaign is run. From his 20 year record of not spending the taxpayers dollars, not taking the lucrative (criminal) congressional pension, not taking junkets paid by the taxpayer, etc., I think we could be reasonable sure that when he says he will cut spending and get the deficit under control, we can believe it!

We can only hope that truth and honesty will prevail. The people deserve it and are now demanding it. Hang on for the ride.

No rest for the weary... $12 mil by year's end!!

Romney is $8 million in debt?!

Do we really want him spending taxpayer's money like he spends his donor's money?

It's about time MSM accepts the fact that Ron Paul is now a 1st-tier candidate. Look at this month, so far he has raised over one million and will definitely raise more after the Fox debate this Sunday. "He's surging" is how the media should now report. Ron Paul will win the GOP nomination because he is the only true conservative running.

Thanks for posting a report on the press conference. I didn't realize Mitt was in that bad of shape. But hey, props to him for at least being able to keep his own campaign afloat. Ron Paul is pretty close to Fred in cash, maybe it's time he gets more space in the televised debates.

Ron Paul has more momentum than any of the GOP candidates in terms of money, grass roots support, straw poll wins and web presence (and let's not kid ourselves - the Internet is taking over traditional media). His low polling is the only challenge to his top tier status, but he is slowly inching upward point by point (5%, up from 2% last month).

No, the new top tier has three candidates. I saw the video of this press conference and Mr Bydlak clearly made the point that only Giuliani, Thompson and Paul have the financial standing to compete in the primaries. This is clear since Romney's campaign is also effectively bankrupt, unable to repay $7.8 million at this point.

At least we know who the fiscally conservative guys are!

I run across people who no more than a year ago couldn't tell you the difference between the executive and judicial branches of government, but after taking interest in Ron Paul there is no question; this is the most amazing part of the Ron Paul Revolution.

Not to mention over $1 million for this month so far.

Go Ron Paul....We want you to be our President!

Mr. Stephen Dinan,

Thanks for your comets regarding Republican Candidate Ron Paul. Paul's campaign pointed out several facts often gleamed by investigative journalism.

Of course the facts are clear; Mitt Romney isn't supported by loyal followers but rather a large portion is his own cash. In addition Mitt Romney is held inept regarding his views to consult his lawyers, waving the need to consult congress for a declaration of war. How absurd!

McCain, is another example of someone who claims he runs on small government policies yet is so far in debt it should offer as an example of how he would run our nation... No Thanks! Have you forgotten the most recent point regarding McCain? He desired to pass the Amnesty Bill.

Rudy will never obtain the true conservative vote. I wonder why he didn't run as a democrat?

Who is next? Movie star Fred? A man respected by some but he is a CFR member and will surly follow the same plans and will lead our nation further in debt and secure the plans for the CFR for the North American Union.

Ron Paul? Some are unsure who Ron Paul is... yet once they understand his message the people love him. Ron Paul has a voting record which speaks volumes, Reagan supported Ron Paul, Ron is pro-life and isn't afraid to exclaim his Christian values, opposes Roe vs. Wade, has an amazing understanding of our economic woes and offers common sense answers to our nations needs. The most amazing change is the increased attention by the MSM.

Thank you for your unbiased reporting.
There is too much opinion in our news today, and not enough facts.

Again, Thank you, and GO RON PAUL!

Awesome, Finally Ron Paul will be able to break through to the masses, win and regain America's pride and honor.

What a candidate does with his or her campaign money is a good indication of what they'll do with taxpayers' money. All are irresponsible spend spend spenders except Ron Paul.

I think one thing that was missed is that the Romney campaign has a net of negative $8.1 million. This blog post while factually accurate fails to make that very important point. I think that was the biggest thing I took away from the conference.

I think also in any blog post it is appropriate to link to the original content which can be located here:

Thank you for your reporting.

Not only did he raise that much nationwide, but he raised, the 3rd highest of all canidates, both democrat and republican, in the vitally important state of New Hampshire- behind Obama and Romney. But most telling is that nationwide New Hampshire has the most Ron Paul donors per capita! Something is happening here!

Given the data from opensecrets.org, comparing money raised to money spent, Ron Paul has the highest return per dollar spent of any republican candidate.

If you consider volunteers and grassroots activism, Ron Paul is in a tier by himself.

He now has over 50,000 volunteers in over 1,000 local Meetup groups nationwide.

He's also won more straw polls than any other candidate, and draws the biggest crowds of any Republican.

So, he's got decent money, and more real supporters than the rest of the field put together. Sounds like a very serious contender to me.

On top of that, his top two states in per-capita donations are New Hampshire and Nevada -- both early primary states....

Ron Paul is brilliant! This train is gaining steam daily! Soon it will be unstoppable!

Go Ron Paul! www.ronpaul2008.com . Ron Paul is the only candidate who will and has followed the constitution, word for word. He has my vote!

Are we top-tier yet?

Screw that, Ron's the frontrunner.

The press conference was mainly about NET cash on hand, which your post ignores. If the various canidates have their debts counted against their cash, Paul is only behind Thompson and Guiliani--Romney, having spent several million dollars more than he has--is actually in last in this respect.

Ron Paul's campaign dollars are only the tip of the iceburg. He now has an army of supporters contributing their time and money in other ways promoting his candidacy.

GO PAUL!!!!

What Ron Paul's guy said was..... Mitt's loan puts him 7.8 million in the hole so his cash on hand is all debt and McCain's debt puts him 60k in debt so they are in the same boat. Ron Paul has no debt he only spends what he is taking in from Grass Roots (and only 3% of his doners are maxed out so look out 4th quad. (he has a million more already)
Is this how the other Republicans plan to run our economy? More debt, higher spending, matching funds???

Ron Paul is top tier for sure he has won 7 of the last 10 straw polls and in head to head match ups he is in the lead of every match up. He has won the online polls after every debate by landslides and everyone knows Ron Paul owns the internet in every respect with 70k plus on myspace, 4million youtube views and 32k plus subscribers, and meetup.com over 1000 groups with 60k plus volunteers? Hundreds of songs and web sites about him......
What is the problem?? How could anyone consider him anything but a top tier guy? All of his stats out side of the "scientific" polls show him on top. This guy is for real and the only one who can beat Hillary on the 2 big issues of our day. As a doctor he is best to debate health care, and voting against the war SHE becomes the pro war person in the race.

Ron Paul is the best candidate in this race, regardless of party.

Other candidates talk about being against the war, whereas Dr Ron Paul has voted against it fmor the start.

He has a decades long voting record that proves he will not flip-flop, trade votes or play politics. He will do exactly what he says he will do and he does not game the system.

He is the ONLY one that speaks of returning to the constitution. He is the truest champion of peace and the free-market. He is exactly what this country needs right now.

1 Million Ron Paul supporters + $12 each =VICTORY

Everyone donates $12, even if you've given before, to the Ron Paul HQ at www.ronpaul2008.com
Ron Paul's HQ will post our info online. Our Name / State we reside in / Our pledge to vote in our State Republican primary. This will prove that our campaign has the largest grassroots support of any candidate!

If we can't raise enough money and get enough people to commit, Ron Paul won't win, no matter how popular he is on the net

Thanks for this article! Its just straight reporting. I appreciate that.

Peter

I am an Independent Voter. I have never contributed to a campaign before in my life. I have never had a bumper sticker on my vehicle ( actually, of any kind, no less political). I have done both for Ron Paul. I do use the internet. I own a successful business and I am over 50. I don't believe you can pigeon hole Ron Paul supporters. Not all are young, kooks, fringe, old or any of the other just this or just that groups. If you listen to the man, judge his record, and give what he is saying a lot of thought it rings true for disenchanted voters. He has issues that I am not in line with, but he has many more that I am in line with. Basically I am tired of having to opt between two choices and having to pick the lesser of two evils. RP pushes my hot buttons. In other words he hits the right issues that make me say yes, I will vote for him. And, I will donate more money to Ron Paul because He believes and acts in accordance with the Constitution and cares about my Rights and Freedom.

Now, if Ron Paul were not on the ballot I would not vote in the primaries. IF Ron Paul is not on the ballot in the general election I will not vote Republican. There is no other Republican that meets my ideals. I believe the polls are way off on this man. I think he is the only Republican that has a chance to be elected. And I think he has earned top tier status. Actually, I think he is the only candidate that really represents the Republican Party in the real sense.

Thank you for letting me speak my mind.

Even if not nominated as the republican candidate, I would still vote or carve his name on the ballot.

Wake up... or turn in your liberties at the voting booth.

Ron Paul is allocating campaign money as frugally and carefully as he would allow our federal tax dollars to be spent. I like that. :)
Our Constitution doesn't cater to any one group of us. It represents all of us. We need to get away from the mindset that has become so pervasive saying election time should be a winner-takes-all event. We should rather elect someone who respects the rule of law and is mature enough to realize that our Constitution is more than the "quaint document" Alberto Gonzales has referred to it as.
Romney claims to be from the "Republican wing of the Republican Party". I'd rather vote for someone who's from the wing of the Republican Party that respects the Constitution.

When calculating cash on hand one needs to consider that Dr. Paul has 50000 voulunteers at meetup.com that are out promoting him everyday, how much is that worth??

"Why is Ron Paul so arrogant? He is showing up his opponents by being purposely frugal instead of dissipating his funds in a frivolous way like John McCain and the rest.

You are confused. What Ron Paul raised in Q2 (over $2 million) has been spent. What Ron Paul has on hand today is what he raised in Q3, plus a little leftover from Q2.

I don't think it's arrogant to demonstrate that you're not diving your campaign into serious debt.

Is Mitt Romney going to run the government like he's running his campaign? Maybe he can borrow the government all that money he owns :)

A huge Ron Paul rally on Monday Nov 10, 2007.

Independence Mall in Philadelphia. I'll be curious as to how the MSM will ignore this one. ;)

I have never had an interest in politics because it was always a case of picking the lesser of two evils.

Paul came along. Loved his platform. For the 1st time ever, finally found an honest politician. Pulled all the stops, made a donation, bought a lot of RP signs and bumper stickers to pass out.

Way to go Paul !! Bob :-)

We Must thank George Bush for being such a critical mess that he has jolted the nations attention towards the facts that corporatism and foreign interests are the primary threat to our nations identity and prosperity. Ron Paul seems to be the man that will lead this country to a healthy free society, by tearing away the constraints imposed by the taxation of our federal reserve system.

He must be careful, Kennedy once challenged the Fed too.

Unfortuneately for Mr. Paul he still is not polling well in the scientific polls. Until he polls higher than low single digits the mainstream media will continue to focus only on the more famous candidates and dismiss him as lower tier. This could change however as Mr. Paul begins advertising in earnest and more people are exposed to his campaign.

Regarding the Meetup groups: yes there is significant value contributed but I would not use teh 50,000 member figure. Of that 50K perhaps 25% actually are active ona regular basis. Still it is a significant source of support.

Ron Paul is not depending on Wall Street. Honesty and Integrity--is it possible we could have that kind of president--one that can't be bought.

Thank you Washington Times for the unbiased article which presented facts of the current status of campaigns. The way I see it, Fred Thompson did better when he wasn't a candidate. It appears that he's losing steam quickly...perhaps he jumped in too early instead of too late. As for Mitt Romney, he actually loses support whenever he shows up somewhere in person. He lost a straw poll in Nevada that he attended personally (Ron Paul didn't even show up and he won).

So the Republican campaign will come down to a liberal Republican in Name Only Rudy Giuliani against a true conservative Ron Paul.

Let's hope that Republicans make the right choice.

The government can't save the nation. People are starting to realize that. Ron Paul is tapping into a New American Revolution, one based on the one that occurred over 200 years ago. I'll go out on a limb and say that this election, 20 years from now, will be looked on as a new start for a prosperous, free, USA.

Very fair and balanced article.
Thank you!

These numbers give you a good indication on how a person will run the oval office... Ron Paul has always been fiscally responsible and he is the only candidate that I TRUST with my contributions...

Ron Paul runs his campaign like he runs his congressional office. A clear and proven indicator of how this good man will run this country if he gets elected. It's about time that someone seriously took the reigns.

Mr. Dinan...thank you for this positive article.

Everyone, your donation will help change the world. Think that sounds far fetched? Hardly. Ron Paul, the last great statesman, has been pounding sand in Congress for 20 years. No one would listen to his golden message until now, when we have strayed too far from our roots. Now he is changing the world. Feel empowered! Donate now! Your contribution, however small WILL make a difference! ronpaul2008(dot)com

On the one hand, Dr. Paul claims he has a large amount of cash. On the other hand, he would argue that cash is just fiat currency. Dollars are useful only as long as the recipient has faith that someone else will accept them, which he argues won't continue much longer.

Finally a candidate with exceptional credentials and and the ability to garner the support of the people! Maybe this election we will actually make a difference in this country! Go Ron Paul!

Thanks Washington Times. Nice concise article.

I've been following RP's campaign and the growth alone is very impressive. No media attention, no corporate hand outs, yet the message of freedom with a flawless voting record is launching his popularity throughout the world. Ron Paul is a dream candidate for the people. The American people only have one chance to take the country back to where it belongs. I've donated and I'm broke! Love your country, support Ron Paul with all your heart.

Ron Paul reminds me o fmy grandfather... Stern, Respected, Fair and Honest.

This Ron Paul guy is the only one out there who is for the people. I am so glad I heard of him now. thank you so much for the article. Thanks so much! I was in dispare before I read this article and found out about him. Victor

Ron Paul has the broadest appeal of any candidate I've seen in my lifetime. Not just for President, but for any office. They love him in Houston. We love him in San Francisco. Compare that to the divisiveness of corporate shills like Giuliani and Clinton.

I think he's been very tight wadded about this money. He knew from the beginning that it was going to be a demonstration in fiscal responsibility. Paul will only go as far as his followers will take him.

Ask Ron Paul detractors if they have ever heard of the Amero. The dollar is experiencing a planned collapse. The Amero is already set up to be the new North American Union currency - no more U.S. dollar. U.S. sovereignty lost. How many people know this outside of RP supporters? Search "Amero"

Remember Remember the 5th of November. 100,000 people donating $100 each on November 5th. $10,000,000 in one day. www.thisnovember5th.com History will be made on November 5th. Watch Ron Paul on Jay Leno October 30.

Thanks for the article.

Good to see the likes of Washington Times warming up to the most interesting and admirable politician of the last few decades.

Vote Ron Paul to save this country!

Remember, remember the 5th of Novmember. Lets show them what we're made of. Ron Paul supporters know how crucial it is to get our man in the White House.
