Iowa poll: immigration matters

It won't come as a surprise to readers of this blog, but a new University of Iowa poll finds that immigration is "increasingly important to Iowa voters."

The poll found that 49 percent of Iowa voters surveyed said a candidate's position on "undocumented immigration" is "very important," up more than 11 percentage points since a March poll asked the same questions.

Among likely Republican caucus-goers, nearly 58 percent said illegal immigration is a "very important" issue for their vote. That tallies with what this blog has reported in the past about the level of interest.

The poll found a majority of voters preferred offering citizenship rights to illegal aliens. Support for citizenship grew among Democrats between March's poll and the August poll, but fell among both Republicans and independents.

yet it was republican led congress who never did a single thing about immigration reform or border security BEFORE and AFTER 9/11 and all of the sudden the democrats are at fault for trying to push through a bill that would ease the situation...

I am voting for The one that is the Toughest on Immigration, I am tired of Illegals coming here and demanding from us and stealing my work in construction and my tax money. I am ready to revolt..

At some point, Americans will simply lose faith in ballots...and pick up BULLETS!

Tancredo is the best candidate out there. romney, giuliani and mccain are fair weathered friends..they will try to convince you that they'll be tough on illegal immigration but their track record shows otherwise.
tom tancredo is the leader when it comes to this issue. he is the one who has always been against this invasion and he WILL do something about it.
none of the dems will do a thing. they're hopeless.

TANCREDO '08!!

"and all of the sudden the democrats are at fault for trying to push through a bill that would ease the situation"

"EASE"? as in AMNESTY for 20,000,000 ILLEGALS who do NOT have the best interests of our nation at heart? Give me a BREAK! The DemocRATs are WEAK on Border Security and ILLEGAL Aliens in general.

10-4 Randy no more Shamnesty! 1986 was it for me never again. Thompson/Tancredo would get my vote!

Pro Patria!

Can anyone think of an easier way for one countries illegal immigrants to dominate and invade the United States than to use the racial discrimination BS. If concerned and loyal American citizens don't make themselves immune to charges of racism, they will lose their nation pure and simple. The Racist charge is used by the America hating liberal /progressive communists, the Mexican LA RAZA groups and others all for their own selfish agenda, an agenda that in no way includes most American citizens and that is harmfull in every way to American citizens. Something to think about--seriously.

The Aliens who have illegally emigrated into the USA are ILLEGAL, but not because of their RACE !
THEY are the ones who are framing the issue and acting as if it's Race War and the USA better realise that Mexico is doing everything it can to create a MEXICAN NATION right within the borders of the USA.
Speak Out, We are all Minutemen Now!

The immigration issue is not a left or right issue. Democrats think they will get more voters, republicans think they will get more conservatives on social issues, unions want more union paying members and more political power (even though the surplus of labor lowers wages and bargaining power), churches want more parishioners to fill their coffers, race/ethnic activists want larger communities, the open-border lobbyists want to increase the number of illegals, the socialist worker party wants class warfare, the anarchists just want anarchy. None of this in in the interest of the American citizen. The American taxpayer wants none of this.
I will be voting for the candidate that is toughest on illegal immigration -- regardless of the party and regardless of what is on the rest of that person's or party's platform.

Mexico is the largest "Labor Dumping" nation in the world. It's own economic policies force it to "dump" 30% of it's work force because it won't clean up the 3rd World corruption. Americans should take notice and stop paying for Mexico's corruption. If they don't soon, it will be to late. Go to Numbers USA and see the Grade your Senator's and Congressmen get on illegal immigration and VOTE accordingly. Also watch this video if you want to see who the real "racists" are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIW-BZ8oLrk&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fsaveourstate%2Eorg%2Findex%2Ephp

"The poll found a majority of voters preferred offering citizenship rights to illegal aliens"
I just don't buy that. Most people I know do not want the illegals offered citizenship. They want them deported.
I also believe Tancredo is the ONLY candidate, Repub or Dem, who will do anything about all the illegals running around. Unfortunatly, I don't think he has a shot, unless as a VP. Democrats will do absolutely nothing but try to legalize the law-breakers. Guliani and Romney talk the talk but have shown in the past they are do-nothings or flip floppers. I have a bad feeling that no one will do anything concrete to stop the illegals from making this the Un-United States of Mexica!

I don't entirely agree with USVoter. There have been at least 100 Republican politicians who have consistently voted for the best interests of the American citizenry, where illegal immigration affects that citizenry. President Bush has caused a rift in the Republican Party where it is divided between Rino's and actuall conservatives. The Rino's are totally against the citizenry on illegal immigration. Real conservatives are for the citizenry. Almost the whole of the The Democratic Party is for illegal aliens and those who came to this nation yesterday and haven't invested two cents yet in taxes. Bush is the problem with the Republcans. Pelosi and Reid and Hillary Clinton are not a problem for the Democrats on illegal immigration because illegal immigrants are more important to the Democratic Party than citizens are. Their actions prove it every single day. I voted for President Carter and did not vote for Reagan, to answer those who will say I am some die hard Republican. No. I am for anyone who is serious about U.S. law and the integrity of our borders.

RON PAUL IN '08! He will end illegal immigration! Tancredo is good but supports Iraq. Dr. Paul doesn't!

I am sick to the back teeth of the MSM trying to convice us that most Americans want to legalize illegal aliens - that is 100% false. All one has to do is read the comments to such articles in ANY newspaper website around the country - comments are 99% against illegals being rewarded for breaking our laws.
SHAME on any legislator who chose to vote against their constituency and for the Shamnesty bill.
What shall we tell the LEGAL immigrants? That they are stupid for following our laws?? The USA already allows more people to immigrate here per year than the rest of the countries of the world combined. Apparently that isn't enough for the greedy.

Your poll says a "majority" of American citizens FAVOR amnesty - and even citizenship - for illegal aliens? Gee, that would be news to the folks who manned the Capitol Hill switchboard on the morning of the Senate vote! That sounds like a "push poll" if ever I heard one! Anyway, I'd go as far as offering temporary residency to parents of anchor babies. But US citizenship? To lawbreakers? NEVER!

Catherine is right. Across the nation people want illegal immigration stopped and stopped cold. We are now living in a kind of dictatorship of the corporate media, that has decided they want cheap labor, they want these people here, they want the immigration laws to be meaningless--Americans be damned. Funny thing is damned we will be, unless we learn the lessons of the past and stop voting for people like Hillary Clinton, Guilianni, Edwards, Brownback, and all the rest of the empty suits and blouses. Honest, straigtforward people are waiting in the wings, Congressman Tom Tancredo,Congressman Ron Paul, Congressman Duncan Hunter, but we simply won't give them a chance. Why? Any of these candidates are certainly not going to cause a bigger catastrophe in this nation than those we have CAREFULLY BEEN GUIDED TO ELECT.

Quite evidently true as the entire U.S. is livid over the massive illegal intrusion of their U.S. communities, having them pillaged and having multiple felony crimes being imposed on them. No, Americans don't like to be thieved, intruded or told what to do by any foreign entity no less an illegal one -- even if they are "nice worker migrants" from our "friendly neighbor" Mexico.

Pray for our deliverance from this nonsense coming from Mexico.

Illegal immigration is a huge issue in America right now! Giving the illegal aliens the right to citizenship is ridiculous. I know many legal mexicans who are pro-American,and good people. However there are also many radical illegal immigrants who are only here to collect money so they can send it back to their families in Mexico. Everyone thinks that illegals are here helping us work as cheap labor, but they are weaking our economy! These people are not even suppose to be here they are taking jobs and do not care to support America. My guess is that if we keep letting them in, sooner or latter they will be the ones in office.Any Republician or Democrat who is trying to persuade illegal voters to vote for them will find themselves out of office, by the very people they thought would support them.

Imigration has been a long issue for a really long time...why now? Why is it that now that people are wanting to change the law for a particular situation. Laws are laws. Just think, what would happen if America decided to allow all of the illigal imigrants to be come legal? Population overload!

I think your polls are wrong. Immigration is the top issue in the 2008 elections. Candidates are going to find that the majority of the voters are against these freeloaders and a Mexican government that does little or nothing to stop it but plenty to encourage it.

NO ILLEGALS - NO MEXICAN TRUCKS - NO AMNESTY UNTIL THE BORDERS ARE SECURED - NO FREE SERVICES TO ILLEGALS

The following is an email we sent to all of our elected officials.

We wonder as we see in the news (once again this day), why illegal aliens are allowed to continue working in our armed forces bases, in our secure areas and general areas of our airports and Los Alamos laboratory.

We wonder why our representatives do not have a clue as to why this problem should be dealt with swiftly, this must be put to an end today not tomorrow not next week nor next year.

It does not take an Einstein to figure out how the likes of China (which already has done) or terrorists could use this problem to their advantage. We can think of a 100 ways without straining one brain cell.

Does the House and Senate not understand that they collectively will be held accountable when the next terror attack occurs? The non-existent border control will be the cause, and the reason will be because of our elected officials.

Thanks
Ron & Dolores

all of you are wrong tancredo is a racist president who hates muslims, we are a coutry of immigrants, how can we choose to discrimnate against a ceratin race. That is horrible and disgustingly prejudice, all of you are bigots!
