Ranking the football coaches

The Sporting News rolled out its rankings of football coaches in each conference while the NCAA basketball tournament was in full swing, so I forgot to pass those numbers along.

But the magazine also came up with a list of all BCS conference coaches last week, which actually makes it even easier to analyze the guys in the ACC.

Here's a look at the 12-team league's rankings relative to the 66 BCS conference schools:

5. Jim Grobe, Wake Forest
8. Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech
28. Bobby Bowden, Florida State
31. Tom O'Brien, N.C. State
33. Paul Johnson, Georgia Tech
37. Al Groh, Virginia
41. Tommy Bowden, Clemson
49. Butch Davis, North Carolina
51. David Cutcliffe, Duke
53. Ralph Friedgen, Maryland
54. Jeff Jagodzinski, Boston College
66. Randy Shannon, Miami

Yikes. That's 10 ACC coaches in the bottom 60 percent, if you're scoring at home. And that includes the last-place guy.

Two coaches who seem to be ranked quite a bit lower than they should be are Paul Johnson and Butch Davis. Both will be winning at their new/fairly new jobs soon enough.

Among the 10 coaches just ahead of Friedgen are Texas A&M's Mike Sherman (No. 46), Penn State's Joe Paterno (No. 48), Mike "I'm a Man" Gundy of Oklahoma State (No. 50) and Pittsburgh's Dave Wannstedt (No. 52).

Any thoughts?

I'm surprised at how T. Bowden is ahead of Butch Davis. I'm also surprised that Cutcliffe is ahead of Friedgen. I also suspected Jags to be higher, especially for how good BC did last year. The top three are dead-on, in my opinion.

Grobe as top conference coach is right on, even if it's probably surprising to a lot of folks outside of NC.
