Quick hits from football

A few tidbits to come out of yesterday afternoon's Maryland football practice. ...

* Tackle Scott Burley has a slightly sprained knee and will be out a total of two weeks. He didn't practice yesterday, and is a borderline candidate to be ready for the April 26 spring game. The guess here is the Terps keep him out of action the rest of the way; there's really no reason for the big fella to risk a more serious injury at this point.

* Coach Ralph Friedgen keeps saying things are tight between quarterbacks Chris Turner, Jordan Steffy and Josh Portis. "I think it’s very, very close with all three of them," he said.

* Redshirt freshman guard Lamar Young sat out yesterday, but Friedgen hopes to have him back for Thursday's session.

* Ralph was pretty happy with what he's seen at running back of late. Da'Rel Scott and Morgan Green look more and more like they will be a tandem next year in the backfield, assuming both of them can stay on the field. Avoiding injuries is really the only obvious thing holding either one of them back.

On the plus side, they'll have a large, experienced offensive line to work behind. That's a group that has a chance to help make both Scott and Green look very, very good next fall.

* From the ever-trite and mind-numbing "Anybody jumping out at you? Anybody making a move?" file (that's the question that's ever-trite and mind-numbing, not Ralph's reply): Seems like Haroon Brown is having a good spring at fullback. So is left tackle Bruce Campbell. And Ralph said it appears Kevin Barnes, Nolan Carroll and Anthony Wiseman are in the mix for the two cornerback spots. Expect Barnes to ultimately be one of the two starters; he certainly proved he was capable last season.
