Cottle's Tight Squeeze

Maryland's lacrosse team will meet Yale in its regular season finale at 1 p.m.

Coach Dave Cottle, a member of the NCAA tournament selection committee, is booked for a flight at 3:55 p.m. heading to Indianapolis.

Therefore, it's a safe bet he won't be sticking around for a post-game press conference.

All of which goes to show --- yet again --- that it's absurd for a mostly East Coast-based committee to meet near NCAA headquarters when convening at a Marriott in Bethesda worked fine for years (as Georgetown coach Dave Urick often points out).

This year's committee, by the way, features administrators from Air Force, Bucknell, Harvard and Hofstra and the coach from Maryland. And yes, I am aware there are NCAA staff members who need to be in attendance as well.

There are two plausible reasons the game time wasn't changed to, say, 11 a.m. or noon. One, no one thought about having the game earlier to allow for some wiggle room for Cottle to make it to BWI. Two, a television deal (CBS College Sports is airing the game live) prevented any change.

Maryland-Yale, by the way, is the only original airing of an event or show of the day for the network before 4 p.m., when San Diego and Pepperdine meet on a baseball diamond in Malibu.

By then, Cottle will be en route to Indy. Or so he hopes.
