A wealth of experience

CHARLOTTESVILLE --- Duke wrapped up a 17-6 rout of North Carolina a little bit ago to advance to the ACC final.

The Tar Heels actually led 3-1 in the first quarter and were within 5-3 at the break. Carolina closed within 6-5 in the third quarter before the Blue Devils scored 11 of the last 12 goals.

Tar Heels coach John Haus was livid on the sideline toward the end of the game, a litany of fouls the source of his anger. And why not? Carolina committed 10 penalties --- nine in the second half --- and gave up six extra-man goals in the second half. It certainly seemed from the press box there was one or two needless fouls called.

Seemed like as good a time as any to ask Haus just how Duke rolls off its huge runs, even if the one contributing factor today was obvious.

"In this game, it was penalties --- nine penalties," Haus said. "And --- what's the best way to say this? They have a wealth of experience."

Haus isn't the only coach still referring to the NCAA's decision to grant an extra year of eligibility to every member of the 2006 Duke team --- with attackman Matt Danowski (two goals and four assists), goalie Dan Loftus (11 saves), defenseman Tony McDevitt, long pole Nick O'Hara and midfielder Michael Ward taking up the offer this year.

Haus isn't the first coach to reference it in a caustic manner. And with Duke (14-1) blitzing opponent after opponent, he probably won't be the last this season.
