Philadelphia, a classic sports town [Thom Loverro]

Philly is a remarkable sports town. Love or hate the fans, they are passionate, sometimes to a fault.

They love the 76ers up here right now. They are seen as a working-class griitty overachieving team. And they love the Flyers -- unless they don't make the playoffs, of course. Then they will hate them.

They hate the Eagles right now because they are upset that their head coach, Andy Reid, has come out and said his team has enough offensive weapons and doesn't need a wide receiver. It was all over sports talk radio today, as this city, which apparently didn't get enough of Terrell Owens, now wants Chad Johnson.

The Phillies? Well, they don't like Tom Gordon, that's for sure. I have never heard a player booed by the home crowd on Opening Day as much as Gordon was after giving up five runs in the 11-6 loss to the Nationals. It was brutal -- just like the Phillies bullpen.

It is going to be a brutal season up here at Citizens Bank Park if the bullpen is as flammable as it appears. They just signed Rudy Seanez, who was cut by the Dodgers, which reminds me of something Nats legend Joey Eischen once told me about Seanez, who practices mixed martial arts. "Rudy Seanez is a bad man," Eischen said, speaking of his fighting ability.

Philly fans might want to take that into consideration when booing.

I hate that you guys moderate the comments. Take a look at the Senate over at Nats Journal. They moderate themselves even when all comments are posted immediately.
