The Nationals' losing streak is now at six after the Marlins finished off a 10-4 win at Nationals Park tonight. Jason Bergmann's second straight poor outing was the game's biggest story, and afterward, he was as animated as you'll ever see him. "I'm pretty fired up," he said. "I'm better than that. This team didn't need that. I failed these guys tonight."
Bergmann had already reviewed tape of his outing with pitching coach Randy St. Claire when he spoke to the media after the game, and said he started pulling off the mound at the end of his pitches in the fifth inning. The Marlins scored seven runs on Bergmann in the fifth, several of them coming off pitches he left up in the strike zone.
"The first four innings, I'm not pulling off," he said. "The last inning, I'm pulling off (on) my sliders and trying to do too much."
A few more excerpts from Bergmann's insightful postgame interview:
On how he reacted to the start: "These guys rely on us starters to go out and give quality innings, and it didn't happen. I'm usually a pretty happy guy, before and after each game, and I'm livid right now."
"I let everybody down tonight. I take this loss really personally, because I haven't pitched that bad in a long time."
On the chance he could be optioned to the minors when Shawn Hill comes off the disabled list: "It's nothing I can be concerned about off the field. On the field, I've got to be the best I can. Tonight, I wasn't good. I am good. I can do the job. I'm confident in that. I'm allowed to be pissed off tonight. I'll be pissed off into tomorrow, but you've got to get better. I've just got to get better than that."
On the decision in the fifth inning to walk Hanley Ramirez and load the bases for Dan Uggla, who responded with a two-run double: "He's a great player. Getting to Uggla, I've had some success against Uggla. He reached out and hit a hanging slider. It's still the right choice."
On when the breakdowns in his delivery came: "It just seemed like the fifth inning. I went back with (St. Claire), we looked over every hitter, every pitch. And with the exception of maybe one pitch, I came apart. My slider was flat; my curveball, I threw one in the middle of the plate and it got hit. I've got to be a little bit better with the pitches."

Doesn't this make the decision to release John Patterson look a little premature?

Pretty ugly last night, the Marlins are not world beaters(slated to finish last in our division) so what are we as nat fans to think. Manny and Jimbo and Stan had better think fast, the Wizards and Capitals are serious contenders for the sports fans dollar in this city, with rising prices(gas, food, etc.) the new stadium might be little vacant while fans enjoy the playoff run of the occupants of the "phone booth".
