John Lannan's afternoon is over, but not before Miguel Cabrera took him deep for a solo homer in the fourth. Lannan's final line: 3 2/3 innings, 5 h, 3 er, 1 bb, 2 k, 2 hr.
Lannan, as stated earlier, fell behind the first five batters he faced. "I just proved that Randy's idea of first-pitch strikes kind of works," he said. "Actually, it really works."
At least he gets it.
The Nats have done nothing with the Tigers pitching staff (Verlander and Armando Galarraga, who you may remember as one of the guys who the Nats traded to Texas for Alfonso Soriano). But Tyler Clippard has shut down Detroit's lineup in relief of Lannan, with three scoreless innings. So entering the eighth, it's still Tigers 3, Nats 0.
