Obama on 'appalling' Wright: 'I mean it'

INDIANAPOLIS — Sen. Barack Obama said today he is angry that his former pastor Rev. Jeremiah Wright took it upon himself to "command the stage" for the past few days.

Obama told reporters in a North Carolina press conference that Wright's publicity tour "has caused such a distraction from what this campaign should be about."

He also noted that his response yesterday was more tempered because he had not seen the video or transcript of the appearance Wright made at the National Press Club, which Obama considers "a show of disrespect to me."

Now that he has, he deems the appearance "something that not only makes me angry but also saddens me."

"The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I'd come to know," he said, adding that his wife Michelle was "similarly angered."

"When I say I find these comments appalling, I mean it," he said.

UPDATE - You can read the transcript of his presser here, and here is video of his remarks:

Brief logistical note: Sorry for the light blogging today. I was flying to Indianapolis in advance of the Hoosier State's primary Tuesday.

Precious sister?

I?m a minister with a unique perspective on what is happening here in America. I begin with the idea that America is great because of God?s guidance, blessing and protection. Today we have problems because we have left the decency we once had behind creating a godless reality that is separating us from the God who loves us. We have serious problems because of the vacuum created by the hole in America that was once filled with God and His Spirit.

This said the 900 pound gorilla in the political ring that no one seems to understand is Rush Limbaugh. His operation Kaos is doing precisely what Senator McCain and his people cannot or will not do. I wish that one of the media would recognize what Rush has done.

I am concerned about this situation because I see the Communist Chinese watching what is happening. When/if we survive the problems of Islamo-fascism, we are going to come to the realization that China is a far more difficult problem. Communists are very focused. They know that their ultimate victory will only come after the demise of the USA. They have set many mines and we have stepped on many of them and countless of our people have perished.

Anyway, I wish that the American media could unite and work together ? cooperation is the word. The consequences of no unity are destruction. If America perishes, we will all suffer beyond anything we can imagine.
If you can respond to my letter, I can share with you other things that would give you a different perspective on what is happening. Key point is that God is working in America. He does not want to lose this nation as He knows what it will mean if USA perishes.

Sister, life is not fair. Evil is real and it is focused on the destruction of everything we hold sacred. God exists and so does the devil. Are you still there?

I?d love to hear from you?

Wishing God?s blessing on you and yours and the things you all are doing.

It is about time that Barack Obama is appalled at Reverend Wright's comments. However, Wright's racism against Jews who believe in Zionism - their right to a national homeland - has still never been addressed by Barack Hussein Obama - nor has there been any explanation by the presidential candidate regarding his hand chosen foreign policy advisors who typically stand against the interests of the Jewish people and thus, the state of Israel.

Did Mr. Obama throw the Rev. Wright under the same bus that he threw his Grandmother ?

Seems Barack slept through 20 years of sermons by Rev Jeremiah, so the good senator had no idea what was being preached from the pulpit.

Thank you Hillary Clinton for being a great Presidential Candidate!!

You are right on with your plan for Universal Healthcare, you are right on with your plans for education, you are right on for supporting working class America!!

You are not a flip-flopper, or a windsock, you don't try to fool us all by switching to what everyone wants to hear. You are the genuine article.

In a time when a man named Obama is trying to pull off the biggest Schmoozing of America in recent history, you are rock solid in your character and your commitment to the American people.

Hillary, no skeletons of 20+ years of hate and racism are jumping out of your closet to claw America in the face. No parlor jokes of demoting our American flag come from you.

Thank you Hillary for all your surprises are joyous ones, not ones that make a person think "wow I didn't know you supported that extremist person".

After months of standing your ground in the face of formidable odds, you have proven that you have got what it takes. No other presidential candidate has had the stuff shoveled on them like you have, and you made it through to the other side. You have shined through as the most tested Presidential candidate of the whole entire contest.

Thank you Hillary for allowing us to continue to have our individual GOD BLESS America. We are a nation with problems, but at the end of the day, Americans are full of heart, and at the end of the day, I know you'll be right there fighting for us.

Hillary for President 2008

Here we go with the "Hussein" again. Interestingly enough that the "sin" you blame Sen. Obama of is the very act you have just committed.

Shall we continue to deal in such pettiness? "Hussein"? Give me a break! And I'm a REPUBLICAN!

It seems to me that the big winner here is Obama. He now has a reason to throw him under the bus, pretend he doesn't know him and even make it seem they are no longer friends. With all of this Wright stuff festering and growing it seems quite a stroke of luck for Obama that Wright would go over the deep end thereby giving Obama the out he's been praying for. Some speculate Hillary caused this blowout. I would suggest that while she is capable of anything, so is Obama.

Obama cannot have it both ways. In a country where whites expect you to look white, and blacks expect you to act black, a biracial candidate of any party faces the worst of both worlds.

Because he wanted the cake of political privilege, Obama has tried hard to both have and eat it. Though he could not look white, he could act white... and since he looked black, Obama had a head start at being accepted among blacks. But there was that whole "acting black" complication.

How to establish one's black cultural bona fides, then? Obama decided to associate with authentically black institutions, including the black church community. Unfortunately, in supporting Jeremiah Wright's alienating creed of black liberation theology, Obama made a terrible (perhaps fatal) error.

So this day, when Obama has to choose between defending his 20-year ties to the radical mentor who helped him climb the black power ladder, or abandoning that mentor in order to pander to dumbfounded whites who thought he was "one of us" ... well, this day could have been predicted.

It's a shame that the Democrats will almost certainly kick off the general election season with a candidate so weary, so wounded, so weighed down by his old albatrosses, that he simply doesn't have a prayer against a unified and invigorated Republican Party.

Since this debacle is self-inflicted, it's hard to be sympathetic to Dems, given that they should have vetted Obama with open eyes and yet did not -- until now. And now is just too late.

OK. If we're going to invoke God in this debate, the only thing I can say is "Jesus Christ!". What is that nutcase Rev. JP McCracken arguing? Let's try to focus just a bit on the actual issues. If Israel and God's plan for America are the only issues that occur to you in the America of 2008, I'm sure you can understand why I won't be taking your position. We've got a country engaged in a two front war, gross violations of the Geneva conventions when our service members are in harms's way, an extralegal detention facility on American soil, recession for the second time in 6 years, and a brewing constitutional crisis over the separation of powers, and this is the argument that you find most pressing?
