Clinton camp not worried about divided party

Sen. Hillary Clinton's spokesman Howard Wolfson said this afternoon he's confident the party will unite around its nominee despite the Gallup poll showing 28 percent of her supporters would vote for Republican Sen. John McCain if Sen. Barack Obama gets the Democratic nod.

I wrote about the party infighting in this morning's paper.

Political tension between Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton is inflaming Democrats' emotions as it spills over into the electorate with more voters threatening to defect from the party should their candidate lose the presidential nomination.

A Gallup Poll released yesterday showed that 28 percent of Clinton supporters would back Republican nominee Sen. John McCain of Arizona in the general election should the former first lady not get the Democratic nomination.

"This suggests that some Clinton supporters are so strongly opposed to Obama (or so loyal to Clinton) that they would go so far as to vote for the 'other' party's candidate next November if Obama is the Democratic nominee," Gallup wrote in its analysis, adding, "the continuing and sometimes fractious Democratic nomination fight could have a negative impact for the Democratic Party."

Among Obama supporters in the poll, 19 percent would vote for Mr. McCain should Mrs. Clinton, of New York, be the nominee. The news benefits the Republican senator, who exchanged barbs with Mr. Obama yesterday about the economy.

"John McCain ought to be a fire bell for the Democratic Party to say we cannot let this thing go on," Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen, a Democrat, told The Washington Times. "We need to have a nominee and get on with running against John McCain."

But Roger Salazar, a spokesman for the California Democratic Party, said the long race is "actually good" for the candidates because each will be "thoroughly vetted."

"We're going to have a nominee prior to the convention," he predicted. "A lot of this nervousness is to be expected, but in the long run, I don't think Democrats are going to stomach pulling the lever for a Republican candidate."

Chris Bowers' Blue Majority online grass-roots fundraising group endorsed Mr. Obama, of Illinois, yesterday, saying a major reason was to end the infighting.

Wolfson told reporters in a conference call he has "absolutely no doubt" that after this "spirited primary" Democrats will rally around the nominee, "whoever he or she is, we believe it will be a she."

"The differences between the two parties are significant and there is too much at stake for Democrats to sit this out in any way shape or form."

I spoke this morning with Mark Aronchick, one of the Democratic donors who wrote to Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Details of letter in my story, or read the full letter to Pelosi first reported by Talking Points Memo, here.)

He's also not worried, especially having weathered many election cycles. "The leaders of the party after a nominee emerges are going to come together," he said.

Mr. Aronchick added his letter was not intended to seem threatening, that he plans to do a DCCC fundraiser in a month and that he thinks the speaker is "terrific."

Nancy Chapman, a Connecticut Democrat, takes a different stance.

Good article. You should know that most Dems I've spoken to who will vote for McCain if Obama is the nominee will be doing so because of their very strong opposition to Obama, and not because they are strongly in favor of Clinton. We, as Democrats who've lived through 7 years of George Bush, very badly want a Democrat in the White House, but we will not vote for Obama under any circumstances. That leaves us with McCain, because his character is sound and he at least has shown that he loves this country. We have serious questions about Obama's connections to Wright, Rezko, and Ayers, and we question his patriotism, character, and judgment.

I read an article yesterday in which the writer suggested that we Dems are possibly only saying now that we won't vote Democratic in the fall, and we'll change our minds come the election. But let me assure you, that is not the case. I am sixty years old, and a life-long Dem, and I would rather see the Republicans win again than to put Obama in the White House. Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and Howard Dean had better prepare themselves for a Republican president, Because I, and many others, will be perfectly happy with that outcome.

With FRIENDS like the CLINTONS, who needs ENEMIES?

I agree with every word of Nancy Chapman's post.

I am infuriated by the continued excuse that the Jeremiah Wright's words were 'taken out of context.' Those hateful words were written and rehearsed by Wright and he owns them. And there can be no mistake that Barack Obama shares his aura. It is what it is and both Wright and Obama will just have to live with it.

Indeed, I have not seen a single word attributed to Wright that he regrets the hateful speech; that his words were taken out of context, or that he feels any differently today.

Obama's continued defense of Wright is scary. Wright would almost certainly continue to be an advisor and confidant of Obama if the makes it to the White House.

What is scary is that you endorse a candidate who blatently lies to you. She has lies and gets called on it almost every week.

There is a big difference between an associate to a candidate being a bad apple and the candidate themselves being the bad apple.

I'm sorry but Hillary R. Clinton will not get my vote. Obama will be the first democratic/liberal politician I will have ever casted my vote for. This lying/backstabbing mentality of the democratic party has always turned me away. Hillary just re-affirms my opinion.

I heard Ambassador Peck on an interview yesterday did anybody else see or hear him? He was on FOX News, this is a white man, and he was upsetting the FOX News commentators to no end, he pointed out, a white man, an ambassador, he pointed out that what Malcolm X said when he was silenced by Elijah Mohammad was in fact true, he said Americas chickens, are coming home to roost.

We took this country by terror away from the Sioux, the Apache, Arikara, the Comanche, the Arapaho, the Navajo. Terrorism.

We took Africans away from their country to build our way of ease and kept them enslaved and living in fear. Terrorism.

We bombed Grenada and killed innocent civilians, babies, non-military personnel.

We bombed the black civilian community of Panama with stealth bombers and killed unarmed teenage and toddlers, pregnant mothers and hard working fathers.

We bombed Qaddafis home, and killed his child. Blessed are they who bash your childrens head against the rock.

We bombed Iraq. We killed unarmed civilians trying to make a living. We bombed a plant in Sudan to pay back for the attack on our embassy, killed hundreds of hard working people, mothers and fathers who left home to go that day not knowing that theyd never get back home.

We bombed Hiroshima. We bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon and we never batted an eye.

Kids playing in the playground. Mothers picking up children after school. Civilians, not soldiers, people just trying to make it day by day.

We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff that we have done overseas is now brought right back into our own front yards. Americas chickens are coming home to roost.

Violence begets violence. Hatred begets hatred. And terrorism begets terrorism. A white ambassador said that yall, not a black militant. Not a reverend who preaches about racism. An ambassador whose eyes are wide open and who is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice upon which we are now poised. The ambassador said the people we have wounded dont have the military capability we have. But they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them. And we need to come to grips with that.

And the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian descent, she failed. She put them on reservations.

When it came to putting her citizens of Japanese descent fairly, she failed. She put them in interment prison camps.

When it came to putting the citizens of African descent fairly, America failed. She put them in chains. The government put them on slave quarters. Put them on auction blocks. Put them in cotton fields. Put them in inferior schools. Put them in substandard housing. Put them scientific experiments. Put them in the lower paying jobs. Put them outside the equal protection of the law. Kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education, and locked them into positions of hopelessness and helplessness.

The government gives them the drugs, builds bigger prisons, passes a three strike law and then wants us to sing God Bless America. Naw, naw, naw. Not God Bless America. God Damn America! Thats in the Bible. For killing innocent people. God Damn America for treating us citizens as less than human. God Damn America as long as she tries to act like she is God and she is Supreme.

I agree with Nancy Chapman. Christine Bellantoni quoted Roger Salazar as saying the Dems won't have the stomach to pull the Republican lever in November, proving that he is as out of touch with American voters as is Pelosi, Reid and the DNC. This matter has nothing to do with RACE, as Obama would have us all believe. It has to do with TRUST. We cannot trust this man who has lied to us repeatedly about his associations with Wright, Rezko, Auchi, Ayers, and who knows who else! There is going to be a revolution, the likes of which a political party has never seen before, and it will take place at the polls in November. Our pledge to vote for McCain is not just an idle threat, as Salazar believes; it is a promise!!! By the way, I am a lifelong Democrat.

Wright has nothing to do with Obama and Wright never said these words infront of Obama. It is hard for American to stomach Obama being in the white hose

Let's not forget about the Supreme Court. We absolutely cannot afford to let a Republican choose more justices. I don't care who ends up being the Democratic nominee, I am voting for that individual just to preserve the objectivity and fairness of the highest court in the land. If you think we're divided now, imagine what will happen if Roe v Wade gets overturned!

You talk about how bad this is for the Party and that just is not true. In every state we have had record numbers register as Democrats and vote in the Democratic primary. We are a two party system and there is a huge difference between Republicans and Democrats. All those independents in reality lean one way or the other. This is drawing all those out and putting them in the Democratic party! This is not just about the 2008 Presidential election but also local and other national offices are also being run. It will also help in future mid term local, state and national election. We need to run a primary in every state all the way to June 9 and keep regisitering those democrats.

Clinton is going to go down in flames if she wins the nomination. Wolfson and the like have underestimated the fervor of Obama supporters. And the Wright controversy is really a non-issue. I would be more concerned about pedophile ministers like the Clinton's former pastor (who was recently convicted) more than Wright's geo-political opinions. Child rape is deplorable and Clinton should be ashamed of herself for allowing that man to minister to her and her daughter. Some child advocate she is. SHAMEFUL!!!

The Democrats have done this to themselves. For almost a decade they have complained that elections they lost were either stolen, or that devil Karl Rove out smarted them. And they have stoked the flames every time an election was lost to try to gain as much momentum as possible in the next election. Well now they have an electorate trained to hate anyone who defeats their candidate. In my opinion they deserve it.

I guess, judging by JanetP's comment, everyone that?s Catholic believes that it?s okay to molest little boys since there hasn?t been a mass exodus out of the Catholic Church. What?s the difference in that and Obama remaining a member of Trinity United.

I feel that Hillary should remain in the race until the National Convention convenes. She will win the rest of the states that are up for primaries up until June because the Caucasion and some African American Democrats are not going to support O'Bama anymore because of the fact that he is supporting and endorsing Anti America in this Country. We need a President who loves all people regardless of race, color or creed. Hillary is the at President and she will work for all the people. And as one of my collegues stated: "the Obama camp has really been degrading the Clintons" and I think that this is horrible. The Obama campaign just needs to go somewhere and sit down and support Hillary for President. I hope we can all come together for the good of the party, but I feel the same as well. I will have to think long and hard if O'Bama gets the nomination to support him in the General Election because he has no experience and I feel as though he was put up to run against Hillary and to cause confusion in the Democratic Party.

Nancy Chapman is an old "RACIST" woman, who is still afraid that a BLACMAN will be President. This is hard to swallow, and this is typical for these old folks to create Racial Divide. They still HATE the blackman. Time and again I have heard my White Grandmother utter racial slurs about black people(my mother is white and my father is Asian), but when I really do connect with blacks at College, it was wrong.

of course is not worried about the democratic party being divided, because for the clintons' is not ALL ABOUT THE CLINTONS!! NOT AMERICA, NOTHING ELSE BUT WHAT THEY CAN GET!!!

Looks like the democrats are going to bite off their noses to spite their face. Will Rogers said it right, "I am not a member of an organized political party, I'm a Democrat."
Delray Dude

Obama is beat and he and the bias media knows that! Why do you think they are so desperate about getting Hillary dropout before the Denver convention? They know if this race goes to Denver she wins the nomination. By the time we get to Denver the delegate count will even be closer and the popular vote will at worst be even if she hasnt taken the out right lead. The number possible blue states won will be in Hillarys favor(who cares about states that will never be blue). At the convention someone from the Hillary support camp will make a motion for the convention to vote on, to accept the Florida and Michigan voters votes and seat there chosen delegates. Those speaking will have to address the matter and the floor will have to take a vote as to accept or reject the people of Florida and Michigan. Well on national TV the speakers will not want to kick out citizens or be anti democratic and the party leaders will not allow an anti democratic vote to be viewed on national TV so they will be accepted and seated. This will give Hillary at the very least a lead in all 3 areas that are important. If it does not put her over the top it will be close enough for the super delegates to have to put her forward as the nominee.

Sue you are dizzy by clintonian spins. She will spin
and spin and spin and lie and spin. Then once you think this is over "He" (Bill) will start the cycle again.... and then she will start spinning and
lying again.... It will be vicious cycle if she is
nominated and worse if she wins general election.

So much mess we already have... we do not want Clintons and their mess on top of what we already
have (thanks to Bush-Cheney). Give this new guy
a chance. If it does not work get CLintons back
in 4 years. ( when things improve, and you are still skeptical of patriotism of all non-white people).

That one poll alone shows no fracture or backlashes for the Democratic Party or how the economy would suffer if Obama is not the nominee. Obama is the one who has created such huge turn-outs at the polls so to take that away from him a more realistic number would be a huge percentage of voters this year versus 2004.

Shame on you. Why don't you do some actual research into Senator McCain before you blindly support him over someone in your own party. I honestly wonder how much of that 28% of voters who state they will not vote for Obama are actually Republicans who just don't want McCain to face a competent Democratic candidate.

Considering the huge amount of baggage that Clinton brings (including multiple lies about her foreign experience, a huge deficit of introduced legislation when compared to Senator Obama, and so forth), and McCain's own questionable actions (such as his flipflopping on such issues as sending troops overseas - he went against President Reagan early in his congressional career), I cannot believe you have the audacity to claim Obama's record is at fault.

Do not throw stones at a glass house when you're within a glass house.

I understand the outrage with Wright. Even though the phrases they looped were taken out of context and once you hear the whole thing, you realize the point he was making (actually a good point at the end of it). There were other parts of a of a few of his sermons (watched two whole ones) that didn't sit well with me.

That being said I don't know what the implication on Obama is. I understand he may of heard some things but that doesn't surprise me when we are talking about someone who would talk with enemies. I guess people think that Obama is running for president so he can win then turn around a say "Kill Whitey"? I just don't buy it.

From what I read of the general american public, most people care more about silly flag waving, ribbons, and sheeplike "patriotism", a word that over the last 7 years has meant everything but what America stands for.

Obama's character and judgement on policy concerns has shown itself time and time again when the heat is on. He continues to show a broader outlook on United States global and domestic policy, and, unlike many other candidates, is educated in world events and politics. He has sponsored and co-written several bills that have passed and become law, unlike clinton and mccain, who continue to go through the campaign using mostly smear tactics.

I will vote for Obama as a write in if I have to. I've wanted him as our president since I first heard his speech about Iraq 5 years ago, when he was saying, and I was also saying that there were no WMD's.

Oh, by the way, John McCain agrees with the war against WMD's - I mean Saddam- I mean for freedom- I mean against islamic extremism- I mean to fight bin laden in Iraq (despite obvious circumstances) - I mean uh... Wait, what's being passed around as the excuse these days?

What's worse a pastor who says hateful things or a husband who does them & sexually harasses an intern?

She lied about not supporting NAFTA.

She lied about dodging bullets in Bosnia.

She lied about having 20+ years of experience.

She's race baiting & calling into question the patriotism of a brilliant and talented politician. This is straight out of the RNC playbook. No wonder so many of you will vote for McCain if she loses. Pretty sad.

There is not a "snowballs" chance in hell I would vote for Barack Obama for President now.

The Press has just "ruined" the Democratic Presidential Primary by "fawning" over him. I mean, OMG!... what is this!

The way this thing is going Hillary maybe able to win the Presidency as a Independent. Unbelievable or is IT?

My choices for president in the order of preference:

1) Hillary Clinton
2) John McCain
3) Mickey Mouse

I agree with every word of Nancy Chapman's post.
I am 48 years old a college graduate and very updated on the issues that concern all of us. I have never voted for a Republican, but I will in November if Obama becomes the Democratic nominee, simply because I question his patriotism, character, and judgment. Furthermore, I will also instruct my family, including my mother, father, brother, sister, husband and my two daughters to do the same.

I FOR ONE HAVE BEEN A LIFE LONG DEMOCRAT ALWAYS VOTING A STRAIGNT TICKET...IF OBAMA WIN'S I AND MY WIFE WILL JUST HOLD OUR NOSES AND VOTE REPUBLICAN AND HAVE FOUR MORE YEARS OF THE BUSHE'S CRAP, BUT IT BE BETTER THAN GOIN OUT OF OUR MINDS AND VOTING FOR AN ARAB. ARTHUR

As a democrat, I would vote for McCain over Clinton should Obama be denied the nomination. Not out of spite, but because of a deep belief that Clinton will say and do what she thinks will earn her the most 'points' at the end of the day. I've been watching both Clinton's and Obama's voting record in Congress and Clinton's can be summed up as 'calculated' and Obama's as 'reasoned'. Unfortunately, Obama and McCain are more alike when it comes to voting on principle and not to earn favors (i.e. nasty grams to the speaker of the house) from the wealthy.

Of course the Clinton's don't worry the party is being divided. They've always been about themselves and not the party. I wish she ran as an independent because she no longer represents the party.

Being democrat does not mean being liberal. What we are now witnessing is that the liberal wing of the democratic party (Pelosi. Kennedy, Kerry Obama) are taking over, with an abundant help of the liberal media (MSNBC, ABC...). This perhaps is one reason why many Clinton supporters will rather vote McCain than Obama. Plus perhaps the cult following and messianic image that is so un-American. Plus Wright etc.

Does anyone stop to think about how this looks to the young people that are involved for the first time.... hatred... infighting... name calling... I too am a 60 year old white female and I say shame on all of you spewing hate!! If you live a nice long time these young people are the ones who will be taking care of you - and making all the decisions about your government and the services it provides.... do you want them to be haters with infighting the rule? or do you want peace and reconcillation and people actually working together for the good of this country? wWhat we do now is going to have a tremendous impact!!

no hillary, no barack, it's john mccain to win in iraq.

we do want to win right, you know, defeat Islamic terrorists and gain a stable democracy in the middle east?

Plus he won't screw up the economy with huge government programs.

Hard to see that racism is still so prevelent. Of course you have to take into consideration Nancy's age. Thank God the younger generations are beginning to see the light. God loves us all, even if we are mad at America, even if we are mad at him. We need a new leader, someone under 60. A new generation to take us forward and out of old bad habits. A new view for a new world. I pray that it will be Obama and that God will give him the strength and wisdom to weather the storms of really stupid people.

I can see no significant difference between the left leaning Republican McCain, or the Right leaning Democrat Clinton. Clinton supporters are voting for a pro war, pro big government candidate just as McCain is. The fact that 28% said they would vote McCain if Obama were to receive the nod is a clear indication of this reality.

The fact remains that none of these people are fit to lead the nation out of our present financial free fall and endless and needless war. Obama will be swayed by the elite power brokers to do their bidding and not the American people's should he somehow win just like any other inexperienced wishful thinking youngster.

Tweedle De, Tweedle Dumb, and dumber. There is no choice that will help America avoid the coming crisis we face among these candidates.

Nancy Chapman's letter has me utterly bewildered. Does she have any IDEA what kind of secrecy and obstructionism she and her husband have undertaken in their business dealings?

Why the double standard?

Rezko is a third-rate fraudster who thought he was playing Illinois politics. Obama is not the crook, Rezko is. Why can reasonable and intelligent voters not make this distinction? Do they believe everything they see on TV? Isolated and incidental financial dealings with this man have no impact whatsoever on Mr Obama's capacity as a leader.

Rev. Wright spoke his mind; he has every right to, just as those who listen to him have every right to disagree.

I don't ever recall a public figure apologizing for attending a service given by Pat Robertson, or Jerry Falwell, or John Hagee, and there have been many. The content of their sermons was no less outrageous or hateful or racist than the few dislocated, endlessly repeating excerpts of Rev. Wrights sermons, which can only fall miserably short of ever properly representing an individual's entire perspective.

Again, why the double standard?

(You'd think Rev. Wright was running for office.)

What of Ms Clinton's affiliation with "The Family", also called "The Fellowship"--a conservative, fundamentalist organization started by Abraham Vereide, which avoids the word "Christian" and which, in private, preaches a gospel of "biblical capitalism," military might, and American empire? How deep do we dig before we discover skeletons in her confessional?

Obama's doesn't play that game; that should count for something.

I'll take positivity and optimism and grassroots energy any day over the muckraking and political prostituting of the Clinton campaign, who spend vastly more time manufacturing dirt on their rival than they do producing substantive and qualitative evidence that would help to disprove why Hillary Clinton would make such an appalling leader of people.

Mrs Sue and Nancy, you get it wrong gentle ladies. This is a test of character. Senator Obama has stated it clearly, that he is not afraid of dealing with people with whom he disagrees in foreign policy, and this applies also to Rev Wright's controversy. I would love to call your attention on Senator Clinton who asserts that she's ready to lead on Day One and ready to pick up the red phone at 3 AM. Last week, however, amidst controversial statement about her famous trip to Bosnia, she gives a very powerful excuse: I was sleep deprived, I misspoke! The one who is ready to lead on Day One coupled with picking up the phone at 3 AM, has been sleep deprived and lost memory: Awesome! Think about it please for one more minute.

First of all, I agree w/ Wolfson about this (though probably about little else). I don't trust poll results such as the ones cited above - supporters of each candidate may be inclined to claim a more extreme position in order to scare voters into voting for their preferred Democrat. As for voters like Nancy Chapman, she probably deserves another Republican president, but the rest of us don't.

Regarding Mark Aronchick's letter to Nancy Pelosi, I suggest he stop trying to influence the election, and just buy the Presidency on EBay. I'll be happy to sell him one :)

McCain = Bush .....

If you expect people in the heat of battle to talk about embracing our opponents while we are still desperately hoping and trying to win, you don't know people very well.

How much time and energy do you think Democrats are currently devoting to the effort of getting to know John McCain? We're trying to have a primary here, OK? We're a little busy.

Please stop asking us who we will support if our favorite Democrat loses the nomination. We're not ready to think about that yet.

Wow- Nancy thinks Hill Clinton is so "patriotic" and has good "character" while Obama does not? It really is McCarthyism. Hill Clinton blatantly lied about running under sniper attack, calls her huge lie a "misspeak," and gets away with it. Obama's elderly pastor- not Obama himself, but somebody else- has some angry moments during his twenty years as a pastor, having served as a Marine and lived under Jim Crow discrimination, and people harp about it. Clearly, the media and people like Nancy are soft on Clinton, and predisposed to dislike a black man.

I can't believe so many people still falling for Clinton trick, she LIED to all her supports about Bosnia, still can't believe people still support Clinton . please these people.

You know, when all this primary stuff started a year ago, I really didnt have much interest in any of the candidates specifically, only lets get anyone else in there other than Bush. I hadnt heard of Barack Obama, didnt feel any specific kinship towards Hillary Clinton, and probably was leaning more towards John Edwards except I couldnt quite picture him tough enough to accomplish the job. So, I started watching the debates and reading up on all the candidates. I even got on that website (?) that asked a series of questions to see who was more in-line with my own beliefs and positions. I knew once this race got really going, the mudslinging would start, as it tends to do when so much is on the line. But I also knew to try and focus on the message, the track record and the gut feeling I got watching all the Democratic candidates make their cases on the debates. So, here we are, 2 people left standing, a lot of mud everywhere, and my focus still the same: who do I believe will get up, everyday, and work their butt off for me and every hardworking American, because frankly, thats what matters at the end of all this. Not Parties, not what-ifs, not should haves, but who I believe and trust to seriously get the job done to clean up this situation we find ourselves in, thanks to 8 years of lunacy. Lets face it, Americas world reputation is in tatters, our economy is a mess, our troops are battered and dying, and frankly, we have a LONG way to go to mend the lines of divisions in this country: racial, gender, economic, etc. In a perfect, ideal world, we wouldnt be voting for a person because of their Party and friends, we would be voting for that individual who has a track record of crossing those very lines and trying to get the important things we all want in life: health, wealth, harmony and happiness, regardless of, gasp, party affiliation. So, after taking that ridiculous but helpful little web questionnaire, watching all the debates, looking at the candidates records and just comparing resumes to resumes, I find myself picking the person that has a track record of what I am looking for. That person is Senator Clinton. She has worked hard and diligently for all Americans, and spent years (35) building strong relationships because she has a passionate vision of what America can be, not just because she is running for President. Senator Clinton is the right choice for me in '08

The level of mirepresentation of facts, misstatements, and misleading comments (see the L word...lies) coming from the Clinton camp is breathtaking and quite revealing of character and a view to a presidency if Hillary was elected.
Every candidate exaggerates, true, but to the core of her argument to be commander and chief.
Its time for her to pack her bags and let a new generation of leadership turn the page.

So, does anybody want to comment about the whisper campaign going on here? What I'd like to know is how much people like JanetP are getting paid per hour to run around to various news sites and spread fear and hate...

Are you kidding me? A life long Democrat, but you vote for a Republican because your candidate didn't get the nomination?

GTFO of my Democratic party. We don't want people like you, who will just take their ball and home because they didn't get what they want.

Wow!! These Clintonites are losing it. In these united states of amnesia some of us are truly losing our way. The clintons are not all that innocent either. Have we forgotten about the renting out of the Lincoln room to Lobbyist during bill's time in office, just to remind you of one episode amongst many. Oh yes, I'm sorry that was Bill and not Hillery that did those shady deals. Don't forget that those words that the Rev.made were not Obama's and he has actually called them "stupid". Please keep your eye on the ball people! You are not a true Dem if you would vote for McCain.

Why anyone (especially a Democrat) would ever vote for Hillary is beyond me. Not that I'm a fan of Obama, either. But she has proven so many times that she is not presidential, it would be a disgrace for her to take the nomination.

With so many "accidents" happening to the friends, supporters, officials, etc... surrounding the Clintons in the 90's,would Obama really risk choosing Hillary as his vice president?

Some may vote for McCain over Obama because they really do not like him as a candidate. One sure way to make every single Clinton supporter votes for McCain is to end this before every primary has run, which includes the voters and delegates from Florida and Michigan! Even if they are not upset by Obama they will vote that way to let the Democratic party now they they will not be stabbed in the back over and over again and take it. Hey as long as we have a Democratic congress in enough numbers to over ride any veto of McCain then a McCain white house is a much better option then a one and done Obama screwing things up so bad that they give back the congress and the white house for another 30 years like after Jimmy Carter. We will just wait until 2012 and put the right Democrat in with the right congress! With a over ride Democratic congress the courts are safe as well as all the other important issues. Some we will just have to wait for 4 more years to get them done right. maybe by then the Democrats will have the courage to have true Universal Health care and true equal rights for all, including gays and marriage license at our court houses. One license for all!

I agree with Susan Leff and Nancy Chapman - However, in addition to the voters Chapman refers to, I ALSO feel that there are many Dem's who will vote Republican because we *do* support Ms. Clinton - strongly - and would rather see McCain in office than Obama.

He simply hasn't been on record long enough and in enough world class issues for me to think of him as Presidential material.

I do have the gumption and *will* pull the Republican handle come November. I am not against all that they represent and in fact, have come to think about changing my allegiance . Too many ultra-liberals leaning to the socialist ideals of the spectrum have caused me concern. (I don't count healthcare reform in this category, though.)

For me this race is *not* being determined (win or lose) by all the discourse and stabs, but by the true gumption, resilience, and determination of McCain and Clinton. I just can't and won't hand the reins over to a Senator (Obama) I feel is simply not experienced enough. When I was younger I prayed for someone from the outside with his kind of words about spirit and compassion... He just hasn't gained my trust. Clinton has far more years and experience and yes, my trust, than he for that 3AM kind of phone call.

Thank you for letting us read these intelligent, thoughtful blogs. All these people who "hate" Obama without really having a clue who he is or what he's done in his life clearly represent the 18% off-the-chart Rightwingers who still think Saddam had WMDs and, of course, that Obama is a Muslim.

When President Obama takes the oath of office, will you hate-spewers support him (like good patriots), or will you throw your rabid support to Fidel's brother in Cuba, or maybe Osama? I somehow think your hatred of this good, decent man (who had done so much more than you could ever dream of doing for the benefit of his country) would drive you to those kinds of extremes.

The Times must be so proud to have you as loyal readers.

The Democratic Party should be very careful about issuing a challenge to its constituency. If the talk around the water cooler is any indicator there will be many people who care more about the character and patriotism of the occupant of the White House than party loyalty.

We circulated a survey this morning among 21 staffers asking who would get their vote if the election is between Obama and McCain. The results were McCain 19, Obama 2.

Of course the Clinton's aren't worried. It's their strategy!

I do not under stand how any American can question the patriotism of another fellow American.Especially of a sitting senator! And for the uninformed the security investigation done by our government for government positions should of itself be more than enough to quell any doubts of patriotism.

The unadulterated bull of "whose more or less patriotic" should be reserved for noncitizens, for example Rupert Murdoch of the Fox channel is an Australian naturalized for US citizenship and still the viewing public watches his trifling dribble.Question Fox's patriotism for Americans.

Politically I am generally slightly right of center, and I often cannot agree with positions taken by left-leaning Democrats. Nowadays, I see Democrats claiming Obama lacks experience and judgment, and appears to have some strong racially biased and anti-American influences (but maybe he would consider me "a typical white person"). I see other Democrats pointing out Clinton is not a team player, and has serious honesty issues (if she wins, will she bring back the White House furniture? When she leaves again will she again take the stuff she was forced to return last time?). Suddenly, I find lots of things I can agree with my Democratic friends about.

I'm 25 years old and I voted for John Kerry not because I knew anything about him but because I knew Bush would be a disaster.

For the first time with Obama I see a potential president with substance who can reach accross party lines to get things done in the White House.

When he is faced with adversity he rises above it. When she is facved with adversity she breaks down into tears and makes up stories about sniper fire while trying to throw her own party members under the bus like a spoiled brat.

As a (kinda) young person I used to like Hllary Clinton until she showed her true character (which is apparent;y no character at all).

I am sad to say that as much as I disagree with Republican views if that lying, back-stabbing, I-have-experiance-because-I-was married to the-President gets the nomination not only will I vote for John McCain I will leave the democratic party as a whole.

Thank God Nancy Pelosi and the party elders are starting to grow a spine. We can not let this woman further destroy what's left of the party.

And if her crybaby supporters want to vote for McCain; so be it. Just goes to show you a bunch of feminist and so-called "progressives" would rather vote for a pro-war, Anti-Choice, I-Dont-Know-Anything-About-Economics REpublican before they vote for a person who has the same views and legislative experance as Clinton. The only real difference between them is their skin color and gender

WOW, wow. Let's call US the Democrazy country then.

Nancy Chapman, a Connecticut Democrat, takes a different stance:

"We, as Democrats who've lived through 7 years of George Bush, very badly want a Democrat in the White House, but we will not vote for Obama under any circumstances."

So Obama, even if you are God, those same democrazy will continue to worship the mispoken machine instead!

Now I will vote for McCain if Billary win for sure.

I wonder how can anybody believe a woman who has been in so many scandals, from Bill's gov days to this minute, who lies all the time and lies again that she never lied, she just "misspoke" many times even after being pointed out. Is it some kind of drunken stupor that hill supporters are in? please show some signs of conscisouness and inteliigence! We are not telling you are racist. But intelligent you should be.
What is Hill's stand in this campaign, changing the stand to whatever might work and getting thrashed every single time. Don't you notice how Obama has become no contender to informidable contender and this Hill with all her loyals with her has slumped from the clear front runner to a struggling whaling kid. Sometimes it is "no matter what I am honored...". The next minute "shame on you Obama." And when you confront her with this she says "it is contested campaign.." Does she have some shame?

OK she does not have any shame. But why are people not able to see it. It must be drunken stupor.

Unless Hillary supporters like McCain, I don't see why they would vote for McCain instead of Obama. I am an Obama supporter, but will support the candidate who wins the most pledged delegates - whether it's Obama or Clinton.

Superdelegates mean nothing to me - I really don't care for the reasons they were established in the first place, and will be upset if they wind up over-riding the pledged delegate count.

If Hillary Clinton wins the nomination purely due to the super-delegates - instead of voting for John McCain, I will simply write in Barack Obama. If Mrs. Clinton happens to win the pledged delegate count, then I will vote for her in the general election.

To vote for McCain out of spite (i.e. because your Democratic candidate doesn't get the nomination) is stupid. Sure, McCain may wind up winning the election, but at least writing in your preferred candidate means that you went with your heart - not with spite. Who knows, maybe your preferreed '08 candidate will get a chance to run again in 2012 if McCain wins the presidential bid this time around. Frankly, ANYTHING will be an improvement over George W. Bush.

JanetP, your starkly "black and white" mentality is troubling. Obama absolutely renounced Wright's offensive words, both in his recent speech and in several interviews and press releases.

The fact that so many people refuse to acknowledge grey areas is maddening. As he himself stressed, Obama cannot kill off Wright any more than he can excommunicate a member of his own family over a single disagreeable viewpoint. Defining and rejecting this candidate based on a short passage uttered by his pastor years ago is deplorable. It's also quite reflective of the knee-jerk, sound-bite era we live in today. In other words, it says more about you.

Any "life-long" Democrat who would give up their vote to John McCain and his 100-year war based on this incident is in dire need of some perspective.

With so many "accidents" happening to the friends, supporters, officials, etc... surrounding the Clintons in the 90's,would Obama really risk choosing Hillary as his vice president?

I am sick of all these hypocrits talking about jeremiah wright as if he is the anti-christ last
time I checked this was supposed to be a free country but according to some people they have the wright to regulate peoples mouths when they probably don't regulate thier own mouth that is part of the problem with this country yes some of his comments are offensive even to me a 40yr old black woman but there is some truth to what he said and all the comments I have been reading from blogs all over this supposed free country some poeple feel they have a wright to pass judgement on other people none of you people are Jesus Christ who are you to criticize anyone! let alone blame someone else for what goes on in someone else's mind I tell you what I object to is the veiled racism transparently disguised as righteous indignation. If I were the Obamas I would let us rot in this mess and move to another country. how dare he try to lift us out of the rut we have been for 100's of years. We do things differently in our churches than you do our people have different needs to uplift us this is totally pointless I will not waste another minute of my life trying to explain black people all you people claiming that wright is anti american and that obama is anti american are anti american yourself because the last time i checked we had free speech in this great land called america home of the free, the brave, and the reacist

That's an interesting way of putting it Mr. Gv and it almost sounds exactly like what Hillary's crew is doing. They're going to take this to the bitter end, regardless of whether it might fracture the party. If she can't have her way, nobody in the Democratic Party will have it.

WAKE up folks .... After all is said and done ~
WE have had E I G H T years of Clintons : don't
need anymore. She "misspoke" & Billary tells us He was "missunderstood" ... Ya * right * SHE FLAT OUT LIED Period>>> and He tells 'tales'

Best of all SHE is in second place and "offers"
the Big 'O' the Vice chair. Zhit - Wonder what she has been smoking and under what desk ???
Somebody get her a big BEACH Towel for when she turns on the tears again.
I am 72 years YOUNG, a Dem. , and damed if I

Don't forget - her "landing" over there : under fire, running, snipers shooting - well

I am just amazed at these comments by supposed Americans. I have been out of the country for over 20 years. I am ex-military(Special Forces) and I have never been so disgusted in my entire life. The right-wing republicans really know how to destroy a country and the present group of citizens really have their heads up their you-know-what. America is going to get what it deserves come November;I hope all of the voters realize their part in the renewal or destruction of our country. I have never seen so much pure hatred in my life. I was much better with liberal America when people actually cared for other people. What in the world happened? We went from the Kennedy brothers to Ann Coulter and Sean Hannity? Something is very, very wrong in America.

Please folks let us get back to reality. Anyone who ACTUALLY believed that the home of the freak land of the slave would elect a blackman President is delusional - REALLY! All of the banter about Rev. Wright etc.. is just a racially coded way to manifest an excuse for the masses that will remove the truth of rascism inherent in their thought processes. I believe that most if not all of the voting public has an extreme ignorance problem which cannot be fixed by an election. Rev. Wright is entitled to his opinion. Regan did not distance himself from his staffer who referred to Qadaffi and his people as "Sand Niggers" while Reagan was in office. In the US it is ok and rationable to say perjorative things about Black but any inference of the opposite is scandalous. How absurd - it seems that the Whiteman still has a God complex. Remember - politics is a game hosted by the "Ruling Class" for the working class to play. Both sides are completely controlled by the Rulers and they can evaluate and tweak the social management system according to the way that the masses react to and with such barometric indicators as elections, trials, sports events etc. WAKE UP - WE ARE RATS IN A CAGE AND WE ARE BEING FARMED - STUPID!

I am a lifelong Republican but after Bush I can no longer vote for Republicans. Obama seems fresh and honest and has the plans to back it up. If Clinton is nominated, I will have to vote for the Maverick. I had enough of Mr. and Mrs. Slick Willy.

This is silly stuff that we are going back and forth. America make up your mind. This is not hard decision to make. You have Clintons lying about everything and Obama who stands for something. Let's not make this election about race and move beyond our looks. We all share common goals, which is to have better health care, better jobs, and better security.

With so many "accidents" happening to the friends, supporters, officials, etc... surrounding the Clintons in the 90's,would Obama really risk choosing Hillary as his vice president?
