Chelsea, in rare speaking role, tells young voters: "Be counted"

NORTH LAS VEGAS — Former President Clinton and basketball great Magic Johnson were the headliners are the event earlier today at a high school here, but everyone's ears perked up when Chelsea Clinton was asked a question.

The former first daughter rarely speaks in public. She regularly turns down reporters' questions (even one from a 9-year-old) and drew the Stanford paper's criticism this week for holding a private event at her alma mater.

But today after her dad spoke for more than an hour, a voter asked Chelsea to speak about youth participation in the political process. She smiled, waved at the crowd and gave brief remarks, which I caught on my (newer and better) video camera.

I don't think Chelsea is ready for American politics (at least her not parents' kind) or if she is even interested. Since the Vietnam War, a lot of parents have brought their children up to think on their own. I think Chelsea deserves the same opportunities, not to be paraded as a political tool.
